Preacher
We welcome you to this historic church in the heart of Leiden. There has been a place of
Christian worship here since 1314. Our aim here is to offer beauty in stone and song to God, the
giver of all beauty and goodness. Based on the services held daily in the medieval Church,
evensong as arranged in the Book of Common Prayer of the Anglican Church has been sung
since the sixteenth century. Much of the service is sung by the choir on our behalf and our
participation is by our meditation and our prayers. However, we invite you to join in the singing
of the hymns and in those parts of the service which are said together. As words and music
come together and enrich each other, our senses and intellects, our hearts and minds are drawn
closer to God.

ORGAN VOLUNTARY
INTROIT
Almighty and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities, and in all our dangers and
necessities stretch forth thy right hand to help and defend us, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625)
All stand as the Choir and Ministers enter.
HYMN – NEH 446
Verses 1 and 3: choir. All other verses: congregation.
(1). Sing Alleluya forth ye saints on high,
And let the Church on earth make glad
reply:
To Christ the King, sing Alleluya!
(2). To him who is both Word of God and
Son,
Who, out of love, our nature did put on:
To Christ the King, sing Alleluya!
(3). To him who, bom of Mary, shared our
life,
And in our manhood triumphed in the strife:
To Christ the King, sing Alleluya!
(4). To him who did for all our sins atone,
In naked majesty on Calvary's throne:
To Christ the King, sing Alleluya!
4
(5). To him who rose victorious from the
dead,
And reigns on high, his people's Lord and
Head:
To Christ the King, sing Alleluya!
(6). To him who sent the Holy Spirit's grace,
To bear the Father's love to every race:
To Christ the King, sing Alleluya!
(7). To him, the universal Saviour, now
Let every knee in adoration bow:
To Christ the King, sing Alleluya!
OPENING SENTENCES
Said by preacher
THE PRECES
O Lord, open thou our lips.
And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen.
Praise ye the Lord.
The Lord's name be praised.

PSALM 119 vs. 1-16
Beati immaculati
Blessed are those that are undefiled in the way : and walk in the law of the Lord.
Blessed are they that keep his testimonies : and seek him with their whole heart.
For they who do no wickedness : walk in his ways.
Thou hast charged : that we shall diligently keep thy commandments.
O that my ways were made so direct : that I might keep thy statutes!
So shall I not be confounded : while I have respect unto all thy commandments.
5
I will thank thee with an unfeigned heart : when I shall have learned the judgements
of thy righteousness.
I will keep thy ceremonies : O forsake me not utterly.
In quo corriget?
Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way : even by ruling himself after thy word.
With my whole heart have I sought thee : O let me not go wrong out of thy commandments.
Thy words have I hid within my heart : that I should not sin against thee.
Blessed art thou, O Lord : O teach me thy statutes.
With my lips have I been telling : of all the judgements of thy mouth.
I have had as great delight in the way of thy testimonies : as in all manner of riches.
I will talk of thy commandments : and have respect unto thy ways.
My delight shall be in thy statutes : and I will not forget thy word.
All stand.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost :
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Chant by J. Turle (1802-1882)

THE FIRST LESSON
Isaiah 55: 1-3, 6-7
MAGNIFICAT
My soul doth magnify the Lord and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me.
And holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations.
He hath shewed strength with his arm.
6
He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things.
And the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel.
As he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.
All stand.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.
Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) in G, op. 81

THE SECOND LESSON
Acts of the Apostles 17:22-28
NUNC DIMITTIS
Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace according to thy word.
For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
To be a light to lighten the gentiles and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
All stand.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.
C.V. Stanford in G, op. 81
THE APOSTLES’ CREED
Preacher: Now let us confess our faith.
All say: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;
and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy
Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the
7
dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father
Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
Amen.
HYMN – NEH 486
Verses 1 and 3: choir. All other verses: congregation.
(1). We have a gospel to proclaim,
Good news for men in all the earth,
The gospel of a Saviour’s name:
We sing His glory, tell His worth.
(2). Tell of His birth at Bethlehem,
Not in a royal house or hall,
But in a stable dark and dim:
The Word made flesh, a light for all.
(3). Tell of His death at Calvary,
Hated by those He came to save,
In lonely suffering on the cross:
For all He loved, His life He gave.
(4). Tell of that glorious Easter morn,
Empty the tomb, for He was free:
He broke the power of death and hell
That we might share His victory.
(5). Tell of His reign at God’s right hand,
By all creation glorified:
He sends His Spirit on His Church,
To live for Him, the Lamb who died.
(6). Now we rejoice to name Him King:
Jesus is Lord of all the earth.
This gospel message we proclaim;
We sing His glory, tell His worth.

HYMN – NEH 476
Verses 1 and 3: choir. All other verses: congregation.
(1). Ye servants of God, your Master
proclaim,
And publish abroad his wonderful name:
The name all-victorious of Jesus extol:
His kingdom is glorious, and rules over all,
(2). God ruleth on high, almighty to save;
And still he is nigh, his presence we have:
The great congregation his triumph shall
sing,
Ascribing salvation to Jesus our King.
(3). Salvation to God who sits on the throne!
Let all cry aloud, and honour the Son:
The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim,
Fall down on their faces, and worship the
Lamb.
(4). Then let us adore, and give him his
right:
All glory and power, all wisdom and might,
All honour and blessing, with angels above,
And thanks never-ceasing, and infinite love.
All sit.

THE LESSER LITANY, THE LORDS’ PRAYER, AND THE RESPONSES
The Lord be with you.
And with thy spirit.
Let us pray.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on
earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we
forgive those that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us.
And grant us thy salvation.
O Lord, save the Queen.
And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee.
Endue thy ministers with righteousness.
And make thy chosen people joyful.
O Lord, save thy people.
And bless thine inheritance.
Give peace in our time, O Lord.
Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God.
O God, make clean our hearts within us.
And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.
10
COLLECT OF THE DAY
O God the King of glory, who hast exalted thine only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph unto
thy kingdom in heaven; We beseech thee, leave us not comfortless; but send to us thine Holy
Ghost to comfort us, and exalt us unto the same place whither our Saviour Christ is gone before,
who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.
COLLECT FOR PEACE
O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; give unto
thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both, our hearts may be set to obey thy
commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may
pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.
COLLECT FOR AID AGAINST ALL PERILS
Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all
perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

THE ANTHEM
Insanae et vanae curae invadunt mentes
nostras. Saepe furore replent corda, privata
spe. Quid prodest O mortalis conari pro
mundanis, si coelos negligas. Sunt fausta tibi
cuncta, si Deus est pro te.
Dwaze en zinloze zorgen overrompelen onze
geest. Vaak overladen zij met waanzinnige
drift ons hart, dat dan van elke hoop beroofd
wordt. Ach sterveling, welke zin heeft het te
streven naar wereldse schatten, als je de
hemel vergeet. Alles is voor jou gunstig als
God maar met jou is.
Joseph Haydn (1892-1983)
SAID PRAYERS
11
All stand.
HYMN – NEH 134
Verses 1 and 3: choir. All other verses: congregation.
(1). The head that once was crowned with thorns
Is crowned with glory now:
A royal diadem adorns
The mighty victor's brow.
(2). The highest place that heaven affords
Is his, is his by right,
The King of kings and Lord of lords,
And heaven's eternal light;
(3). The joy of all who dwell above,
The joy of all below,
To whom he manifests his love,
And grants his name to know.
(4). To them the cross, with all its shame.
With all its grace is given:
Their name an everlasting name,
Their joy the joy of heaven.
(5). They suffer with their Lord below,
They reign with him above,
Their profit and their joy to know
The mystery of his love.
(6). The cross he bore is life and health,
Though shame and death to him;
His people's hope, his people's wealth,
Their everlasting theme.
