The real answer

Nov 12-8:34 AM

Mammograms Many women choose to have annual mammograms to screen for breast cancer after age 40. A mammogram isn’t foolproof. Sometimes the test suggests that a woman has breast cancer when she really doesn’t (a “false positive”). Other times the test says that a woman doesn’t have breast cancer when she actually does (a “false negative”). Suppose the false negative rate for a mammogram is 0.10.

(a) Interpret this probability as a long-run relative frequency.

(b) Which is a more serious error in this case: a false positive or a false negative? Justify your answer.

A family restaurant chain wants to test the market for a new

menu item: a grilled chicken sandwich with chipotle salsa.

They are interested in both how to market the item and the

right price to charge for it. They decide to offer the sandwich at

60 different restaurants in the chain, using two different

descriptions on the menu. Half the restaurants’ menus will

emphasize “healthy eating” and half will emphasize “value.”

They further plan on offering the new sandwich for a charge of

either a High, Medium, or Low price. Each restaurant will have

identical menus with identical locations in the menu for the

sandwich. The only differences in the menus will be those

previously mentioned. After a month, they will measure what

proportion of customers order the new sandwich based on the

menu options.

e) How many factors are there in the experiment? What

are the levels of each factor in the experiment? Create a

treatment table (labels please) for this experiment to

answers these questions.

f) How many treatments are there in this experiment?

g) How many restaurants can be allocated per treatment?
