About ULI Washington
a district council of the urban land institute
ULI is a nonprofit education and research institute supported by its 35,000 members worldwide. As the preeminent, multidisciplinary real estate forum, ULI facilitates the open exchange of ideas, information, and experience among local, national, and international industry leaders and policy makers dedicated to creating better communities.
ULI has regional District Councils, which are dedicated to bringing ULI’s resources and educational programs to their communities. Members who live in the Washington region are automatically members of the Washington District Council, one of the largest and most active district councils in the country.
ULI Washington has almost 2,000 dedicated and engaged members who collectively make this organization a dynamic and thought-provoking forum for the exchange of ideas and promulgation of solutions. Over the past year, more than 5,000 practitioners attended ULI Washington programs, including breakfast meetings, case studies, Young Leaders Group events, The Lifetime Achievement Award Dinner, Urban Marketplace Conference & Expo, and The Washington Real Estate Trends Conference.
ULI Washington is taking a leadership role on regional land use issues. Through our outreach initiatives we are exploring ways in which to preserve and promote workforce housing in our region through our work with the Terwilliger Center for Workforce Housing; recognizing projects and well-planned open space through our Smart Growth Alliance; providing Technical Assistance Panels to local jurisdictions and nonprofit organizations facing difficult land use decisions; educating tomorrow’s citizens through the UrbanPlan curriculum and supporting emerging land use professionals through the Young Leaders Group (YLG) Mentorship program.
All of ULI Washington’s work is guided and supported by its members through committees and other volunteer activities. There are many opportunities to make a difference at the local level, and we encourage you to become part of the district council experience.
ULI Washington has almost 2,000 dedicated and engaged members who
collectively make this organization a dynamic and thought-provoking
forum for the exchange of ideas and promulgation of solutions.

John e. “chip” akridge, iiiChip Akridge, Founder and Chairman of the commercial real estate firm bearing his name, is an innovator in the industry, a committed advocate of community initiatives in the Washington, DC region and a dedicated supporter of philanthropic and charitable organizations.
Akridge founded the firm in 1974 to specialize in commercial real estate in downtown and suburban Washington, DC. Since then, Akridge has acquired or developed more than 11 million square feet of office, retail, industrial/warehouse and research and development space in the region. Currently, as Chairman of the company, he is responsible for corporate oversight and strategic planning. He is continually focused on developing the highest quality products and delivering superior Client service.

Akridge was the first to use the “Woodies Act,” which enables developers to lease the air rights above and below a public area in order to join properties. He was also the first to use the DC Tax Increment Financing Program to build a mixed-use complex that revitalized the city center. Akridge worked closely with the city government to develop innovative legislation that created the housing linkage program, Business Improvement Districts, Tax Increment Financing and regulatory guidelines to improve the water quality of the Anacostia River.
He has served as a Member of the Economic Development and Executive Committees of the Federal City Council and as Chairman of the Greater Washington Board of Trade’s Emergency Preparedness Task Force.
A strong advocate for the environment, Akridge has served on the Board of Trustees of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Nature Conservancy of Maryland/DC, and various agencies of the city government. He testifies frequently in support of environmentally-friendly legislation before the DC Council and the Maryland State House and Senate. He is committed both personally and professionally to sustainable building design — earning numerous Smart Growth awards, earning the Accredited Professional designation LEED and is an EPA Energy STAR partner.
Akridge is also a leader in philanthropic and civic organizations in the Washington, DC area.
