26 Rotarians present; guests were Brian Valenzuela and Fred Meyer, prospective members; Chris Schuchart, Medina County Judge and assistant, Brittany Mendoza

DeAnna announced that school campuses reps will collect Stuff the Bus donations Fri.Evelyne said there was an EarlyACT committee meeting Wed. night and we have spo-ken to the principal at Woolls. We may or may not be able to follow all of the Rotary District’s guidelines for the program. Start date may need to be pushed to October due to school district’s schedule for September. There are 9 things in the mission statement and if they do one per month, they should be able to complete them within a single school year. We will also utilize resources from our Interact program.Johnette’s Rotary moment was about a para-olympian who succumbed to Polio as a child, but with sheer determination, turned childhood taunts into motivation to beat the disease and its after-effects. Meeting Summary: Speaker Medina County Judge Chris Schuchart reported Texas is one of the fast-est growing states in the US. Our sales tax revenues continue to increase both at the county and at the state level. 600 people/day move to Texas; 23% of those are moving to this area. Texas is #1 state in the union for the exports – if we were a country, our economy would be the 10th largest in the world. Chris went on to share that there will be several new unfunded mandates. Additionally, he shared the issues that we are seeing proposed in Austin as they pertain to property tax and the rollback rate. Some upcoming issues for Medina County include Microsoft building here; the partnership between Vulcan & Southwest Gulf Railroad moving forward with development; addressing Chronic Wasting Disease; expansion of FM 211 from Potranco and FM 471 and subdivisions; the use of countywide election system & new equipment; and the use of a Motorola Radio System to increase in-teroperability. General fund reserves for the county are very healthy. Some of the large expenditures for the county recently include renovation & maintenance at the Courthouse to include the HVAC system, interior repairs of the floor & paint, the purchase of new election equipment, employee healthcare, repair of the court-house & jail parking lots, a new county building in Castroville, the Motorola Radio System and a new adult and juvenile probation office complex. In looking forward, Chris said we still need to address having a courthouse annex. Additionally, we need to look at jail expansion. Currently, the County pays a consid-erable amount of money each year for other entities to house our inmates. The best driver to be able to fund these initiatives are the expansion of our economic devel-opment efforts and the gomedinacounty.com efforts. One of the questions asked was does the County have a countywide recycling effort – which we do not. Ev-elyne asked for Chris to share what the Boy Scouts are doing in the coming weeks. Chris said there is a proposed Eagle Scout project to construct a covered pavilion for employees to partake in their lunch and breaks.
