In 1989, Honda and the College Bowl Company teamed up to create Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC). The birth of HCASC marked the creation of varsity scholar teams and official academic competitions at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The goal is to support the unique mission of America’s HBCUs and to emphasize the belief that knowledge is our most valuable resource. Knowledge enriches us personally and opens our eyes, minds and hearts to the possibilities the world presents. It reinforces the ideal behind Honda’s motto, The Power of Dreams.

Honda’s commitment to HCASC expresses its belief that success isn’t measured solely by the products we make, but also by the lives enhanced.

HCASC is not just an entertaining game of outstanding intellect and quick recall. In addition, it reinforces critical life skills: sportsmanship, teamwork, passion, preparedness, striving for success, accepting defeat with dignity and presenting oneself with style and grace at all times.

Our alumni travel the world applying their skill and compassion to every imaginable career and human endeavor. They give back to their alma maters and HCASC by supporting campus activities, mentoring students and becoming global ambassadors for our Friends for Life philosophy.

Honda Campus All-Star Challenge is a shining example of how Honda associates, College Bowl staff members and the friends we’ve made in the HBCU community strive to empower people and make a difference where we live and work.

As with the competitors from the years before, we are proud to welcome the Class of 2018 to our HCASC Friends for Life family.

John Thomas spent a year in Peru as a Fulbright Scholar, interned at the World Bank in the Dominican Republic, became an adjunct professor at Chicago State, and in 2011, was elected to a 5-year term as the Youth and Young Adult Coordinator of the World Methodist Council, responsible for facilitating youth and young adult initiatives in its 80 member denominations .

A lifelong member of the St . John AME Church in Nashville, in 2016 he was elected to serve as editor of “The Christian Recorder,” whose readership serves 39 countries on 5 continents . He is the 1st layperson to serve in this role and the youngest elected General Officer in the history of the AME Church .

NAYIRAH A. MUHAMMAD - FISKA passionate scholar and competitor, Nayirah has shined during gameplay at each of the NCTs she has attended . The game officials in her division were impressed by her knowledge and quickness on the buzzer . Nayirah has shown responsibility and respect for teammates, and leads by example when it comes to being a good sport . It is easy to see that Nayirah participates in HCASC for the love and enjoyment of competition, learning, and fellowship .

HERBERT THOMAS - PRAIRIE VIEWHerbert Thomas’ supervisor describes him as never in a bad mood, always happy, helpful and encouraging to students, and colleagues alike . Rather than seeking to be served; instead, he’s a servant to all . When his team won their first national championship, some might have thought it was a fluke . However, bringing home a second championship in 2015 removed all doubt . Herb’s hard work, determination, and love blend to make him the perfect father figure, friend and yes, “Coach of the Year!”
