HON. SECRETARY’S REPORT TO A.G.M. 1996

Dear Members,

It gives me great pleasure to record another very successful year in the history of our Society.

The following highlights will I hope, reflect on our year in terms of success and enjoyment.

MEMBERSHIP: The Society register, which is in the process of updating, had fifty three (53) Members, twenty five (25) Hon. Members and six (6) Hon. Sponsors for the year.

OUTINGS: In the year under review we held eight (8) outings inclusive of today’s and in addition to our traditional week-end away. The attendance figures for our programme which shows slight increase overall is as follows:

WEEK-END AWAY: This year the 11th anniversary of the week-end away saw most of the usual group head for the North West again. Bundoran, apparently, is now the main attraction for the weekenders and it is an ideal venue for this type of occasion. The hotel is located on the golf course, and the report is of friendship, good food, excellent course and good value. Fifteen couples and four singles made the trip this year. An overall and team competition took place over the three days. The overall winner was Benny Flood and the runner up was Billy Cullen. The team competition was won by Tom Flanagan with the assistance of Billy Cullen and Brian Shelbourne. The ladies section was again won by Joan Gilmartin. Well Done Joan!! I have only bits of information about off the course ‘’carry on’’ but I believe it was quite hectic, and there was certainly a few non appearances on Sunday morning. The weekend in Bundoran will be a must for 1997.

SINGLES MATCHPLAY: This year the final of the Singles Matchplay for the Technico Silver Salver brought together Willie Buckley and Peter Kelly. After the first leg in Kilcock, Peter had a slender advantage of one hole. With home knowlege in the second leg, in Beech Park Willie took advantage but the match went to the 37th hole in a very close contest.

Congratulations to both players.

FOURBALL MATCHPLAY: The final of the Fourball Matchplay for the Interphones Trophy took place in Castlewarden Golf Club between Ray Ryan/Willie Buckley and Dave O’Brien/Barney McCann. This match went to the 16 hole before Dave and Barney decided the title should again go to Ray and Willie.

What ever happened to Pat and John in this competition who faithfully promised revenge over Ray and Willie in 1995.

In passing I am sure you will all join in congratulating Ray and Willie for winning the All Ireland Pierce Purcell Shield in 1996 which concluded in Tramore in September.

CAPTAINS DAY: The Major event of our Golfing Calendar our Captains Prize saw a big turnout in Donabate Golf Club for Michael Core’s Day. The large attendance was a fitting tribute to our most popular Captain Michael. The man of the day was Bill Conway who had a very respectable 43 pts and wins his first major competition. Bill’s score was closely followed by Paddy O’Brien who had 42pts.The competition was played in beautiful Autumn sunshine. Special thanks to the Captain, Members and Staff of Donabate Golf Club for the use of the course and for their kindness assistance on the day.

Congratulations to Michael for a marvellous prize and for the splendid course and facilities that Donabate offered and also for the wonderful quality of all the other prizes on display for his very successful Captain’s Day.

PRESIDENT’S DAY: The President Dave Egan’s Prize was played for in Saint Anne’s Golf Club in July. Thanks to Dave for a lovely prize. Saint Anne’s as usual proved a difficult course but not for newcomer Tommy Kavanagh who returned 41 pts of his club handicap. Congratulations Tommy and thanks Dave for a most enjoyable day.

GOLFER THE YEAR: In the Gross Golfer of the Year Frank Roche took this years title (with 142 points) beating Ted Donegan to second place again (with 140 points). Congratulations Frank and no doubt Ted will be back wiser and stronger next year.

D.U.G.S.A.:The D.U.G.S.A. Challenge Cup took place this year in Greystones Golf Club with the qualifying rounds being played on Monday and Tuesday 22nd and 23rd April 1996. The subs were Fergus Murray, Brian McLoughlin, Derry McEvoy and Bill Cullen. Under difficult weather conditions and tricky greens, the team gave of their best but failed to qualify. Thanks is due to the controllers, the team and the supporters. We believe this competition is worth supporting in the future.

TELECOM EIREANN CHAMPIONSHIP: This year the National Championships were hosted by Waterford District at Courtown Golf Club. Thanks to all concerned for the effort put in to organising this event and to the players who did their utmost to win this accolade.

The hotel is located on Dromoland Castle golf course and it is an excellent venue for a golfing weekend. I can report great friendship, good food, and excellent value.Dromoland golf course, which was played on Thursday, was a bit disappointing, considering all the previous hype about it. The main competition was played over Friday & Saturday at Woodstock Golf Club. This is a beautiful course, just outside Ennis on the Lehinch Road. Ray Ryan had two excellent cards to win the overall. The ladies, who did not play golf, took off to Limerick on Friday and to Galway on Saturday and had a lovely time. There was plenty of wining and dining, music and crack in the evening (I’ll say no more). Many thanks to Tom and Mary Flanagan for organising the weekend. At the time of printing it is expected to return to the Clare Inn next year, with a possible change of course to Ennis G. C. and Woodstock G. C.SINGLES MATCHPLAY:This year thirty-two (32) members participated in the Singles Matchplay competition for the Technico Silver Salver. The final brought together Willie Buckley and Derry McEvoy. GOLFER OF YEAR POINTS SYSTEM:This was our second year to use the new points system for Golfer of the Year. I am happy to report that Beech Park Golf Club has agreed to run the event and it is expected to headquarter the main ceremonies in the Green Isle Hotel. While the sub committee will be busy planning the main events all members are expected to contribute (time wise) to the overall success of the championship 2000.
