SEBASTIAN — Pelican Landing Assisted Living and Memory Care in Sebastian will host “Paws and Pumpkins,” an animal adop-tion event in conjunction with HALO Res-cue, on Sunday, Oct. 14, 1-4 p.m. The public is invited to the free afternoon of furry paws, food, and fun.

The pet-friendly community has always had a soft spot for animals, and this event is designed to be a family-friendly party to raise funds for HALO’s Angel Wings pro-gram, which pays adoption fees for people who can’t afford them.

“HALO is going to bring some dogs and cats who are available for adoption,” said Rita Merriman, Community Program Director. “People can come meet pets avail-able for adoption.”

“All the funds that we’re raising at this event, and all the donations we’ve received for this event, will go to support the Angel Wings program. That covers adoption fees for somebody who wants to adopt a pet but doesn’t have the funds. Adoption fees for adult cats and dogs start at about $125, and go up to almost $200 for some of the pup-pies and kittens. They are a little more because of the shots and extra money that HALO has invested in them.”

“Right now we have enough donations to cover two and a half adoptions. We’re trying to raise enough to cover more adoptions.”

“We’re going to have vendors and give-aways,” added Karen Riddle, Community

Relations Director. “Everyone is invited, all ages. There will be things for kids and fami-lies to do, and you can bring your pets. This will be a big, fun community event.”

“For kids we’ll have face painting, the ice cream truck, pets to meet from HALO,” said Ms. Merriman. “We have a pet massage therapist who will offer 10-minute demo massages for your pet.”

“Love of Paws Sanctuary and Paws Meals on Wheels will be here. They focus on seniors and helping them care for their pets. If the senior has to go into a hospital for a short period of time, they will shelter and care for the dog. They will also foster and try to find homes for dogs whose seniors can no longer care for them.”

Expected sponsors/booths/exhibits as of press time include: Pudgy Penguin (ice cream and Italian ice truck), Michael J. Pet Photography (taking family/pet photos), Nurse on Call, Pixie Chickz (face and body art), South Paw Massage (free 10 minute demo massage), Love of Paws Sanctuary, Paws Meals on Wheels, Nicole’s Mobile Pet Grooming, All Lit Up, Wabasso Puppy Pas-tries (Wabasso Middle School students sell-ing homemade pet treats), Gina Johnson (jewelry), and Krisy Kreations (crafts).

“We are still looking for more vendors for the event,” said Ms. Merriman. “It’s just $25 for them to set up a table, and they can sell their product at the event. It doesn’t have to be an animal-related service or product. We want this to be a fun event even for those who are not looking to adopt a pet.”

The $25 fee from each vendor goes entire-

ly to HALO. Some of the vendors will also donate a portion of their sales to HALO. Some of the vendors who would normally charge to attend an event, like the ice cream truck, are waiving their fees.

There will be crafters, jewelry, and art. “The Wabasso Middle School is starting a business making homemade pet treats, and they will be here,” said Ms. Merriman.

Pet photographer Michael Jackson from Los Angeles will be on-site with a mini-stu-dio set up for people to get photos of or with their pets. Mr. Jackson will have a discount-ed package price for people attending the Pelican Landing party. The photographer will have different backgrounds and acces-sories to go with the photos, so this is a great opportunity to get your holiday cards taken care of in advance, while also helping shelter animals.

Pelican Landing will be selling $5 lunch-es, all of which will be donated to HALO.

Pelican Landing is pet-friendly. They cur-rently have three cat residents.

“We do pet therapy, that is a huge thing with our residents,” said Ms. Merriman. “They love it. We have about six different volunteers with pet therapy certified dogs who rotate through our community.”

If you are looking for a pet friendly facili-ty, Pelican Landing urges you to consider them and take a tour.

“We want the entire community to come out to the event and spend the day or just an hour,” said Ms. Merriman. “This will be a fun event for families and children. It will be

great for people who want to adopt a pet, and also for people who want to check out our facility, but also lots of fun for everyone.

The free event is at Pelican Landing Assisted Living and Memory Care, located at 13085 US Hwy 1, Sebastian. For more information about the adoption event including vendor spaces available, call Rita Merriman at (772) 581-0366.

educators and professionals who volunteer to judge their projects,” said Paula Golden, President of the Broadcom Foundation. “The Top 300 are the best-of-the-best and represent all science fair participants throughout the country. It is especially exciting to see more young women making it to the Top 300 in this rigorous national STEM competition that boasts a record number of applicants this year.”

This year’s semifinalists included more females than males, with 152 girls (51 per-cent) and 145 boys (48 percent) selected. The 300 were selected from a pool of 2,537 applicants after being evaluated by a panel of scientists, engineers and educators. Proj-ects were judged on creativity and originali-ty, and the ability to apply STEM principles to the real world.

The semifinalists represent the top 10 percent of 6th, 7th and 8th grade projects entered in science fairs around the country. All received a gift package including a back-pack, an invention journal, and subscrip-tions to Science News magazine and math software.

From the 300 semifinalists, 30 were cho-sen to go to the finals. Neither Indian River County student made the finals but, as school district spokesperson Cristen Mad-dux told Hometown News, “Top 300 is such a huge accomplishment!”

Cynthia Falardeau, Executive Director of The Education Foundation of Indian River County, said “Each of these students got the opportunity to apply through the Indian River Regional Science & Engineering Fair. The process of completing a Broadcom Masters application is rigorous. We want to thank all of our science fair sponsors for

encouraging Zachary and Lucy to apply. We are very proud of Zachary and Lucy. We know they have the power to change the world.”

The semifinalists came from all sorts of schools: 59.7 percent from public schools, 30.3 percent from private schools, 6.3 per-cent from charter schools, 3.3 percent from home schools and 0.3 percent (one student) from an online school.

“Middle school is a critical time for all students,” said Maya Ajmera, President of the Society for Science and the Public, one of the sponsoring organizations. “It is a time when they are beginning to explore all pos-sibilities in front of them as they grow into adulthood. The Broadcom Masters is so important because we are engaging these young people and helping to cultivate their interest in science, technology, engineering and math.”

Some of the other winning projects addressed minimizing food waste using an app; testing gene mutations that could cause cystic fibrosis; enhancing search and rescue efforts using antenna-based wireless signals; more effective solar panel design; testing the effect of melatonin on breast cancer growth; and developing a more efficient battery.

Dakota is a nine-year old spayed female black and white mixed breed dog, who came to the Humane Soci-ety in July as an owner surrender. She had lived in a home with elementary-age chil-dren, and she did well when tested around cats. Dakota may seem a bit shy at first, but she is respectful of her handler and does a great job on walks. This gorgeous girl is more interested in people than in treats or toys. Dakota is mature, but clearly has a lot of love to give. Her sweet dispo-sition and calm demeanor will make her the perfect walking com-panion for some special owner! Florida's toxic algaeThis is in answer to the man who said the

Feds don’t want to clean up Florida's waters. The Federal Government has been trying

to get FL to clean up its waterways since 1998. When they finally got tough 6 years ago, Gov. Scott and the Repubs in control all stonewalled, and said these “onerous” regu-lations would be too hard on FL businesses.

Gov. Scott slashed the budgets of all 5 of FL’s water management districts, by 40 per-cent. Scientists and engineers were laid off; all land buying projects seem to have stopped. Then FL’s Environmental Commis-sion, whose board is appointed by Governor Scott, weakened criteria for 23 toxic chemi-cals in FL waterways, allowing higher levels of benzene, for instance.

Live clerks vs. machinesA reader lamented the limited number of

live clerks vs. scan checkout options and his/her preference for live clerks. I heartily endorse those sentiments and clerks replaced by machines certainly felt the same way. It’s a safe bet that overworked real peo-ple who are still employed are earning mini-mum wage and stay because they don’t have a choice. Florida minimum wage is among the lowest, if not the lowest in the nation.

Big corp billionaires tempt consumers with low prices and the ease of ordering. The downside is: lost jobs and lost privacy. Every time you access the Internet for infor-mation and order via the internet you are tracked and your information can be used for more than marketing purposes. Apps are required in some stores for sale items. No app – you pay regular price. The Inter-net is largely responsible for the creation of this go along to get along society.

This morning this headline caught my attention: Should cashless retail stores be banned? Amazon and Walmart are fighting

a New Jersey bill that would require stores to accept cash, i.e., if corporations get their way all purchases would have to be made via plastic or app or from some other technical device. Again, technology taking away con-sumer choice – and rights.

Would Hometown News consider doing a survey about how locals feel about this? Businesses would benefit from the informa-tion which comes directly from consumers, who should be the ones determining how they want to do business.

Also prefers live clerksI happen to agree. People need to stop

and realize you don't get a discount for not only doing your own shopping, but check-ing yourself out and bagging your items and taking them to your car.

You're paying as much, if not more, and there are less employees. The only place making money off this scam is the store.

I have gotten into the habit now if there are only one or two lanes open with a real person and the lines are long, I go back into the store, fill my cart to the brim with non-food items and then leave it.

At least one of the few employees left in the store might get some overtime pay for putting the stuff back. If I want to self check, I will stay home, save my gas and shop on Amazon. At least they deliver.

'Give bicyclists more room'Where would you propose bicycle riders

ride? On the sidewalks that are meant for pedestrians?

It sounds to me you are one of the people who don’t move over and give a bicycle rider proper clearance. The only time I see a bicy-cle in the middle of the road is usually when the rider is crossing a road, or going around an obstacle, or in a neighborhood on a back street. This is where you find the neighbor-

hood children riding who delight in racing and riding in circles and generally doing innocent kid stuff.

Bicycles are subject to the same rules as motor vehicles. Just like motor vehicle oper-ators, you will find some breaking the law, riding against traffic. This is a danger to all because most cars, when pulling out of a driveway or into an intersection, are not looking for bicycles riding on the wrong side of the road, and just not paying atten-tion.

They should be ticketed as should a motorist. Maybe we need more bicycle rider education, but how in the world would requiring a bicycle to be registered solve any of these issues? How about motorists and bicyclists alike use more of what seems to be missing in large amounts these days – com-mon sense and courtesy?

As it stands, the law is give bicyclists three feet of clearance. That means stay three feet off of the bicycle lane, not drive next to or on the line. Give more than three feet when driving highway speeds.

Democratic socialism often misunderstood

A democratic socialist is not Marxist socialist or communist.

A democratic socialist is one who seeks to restrain the self-destructive excess of capi-talism and channel the government's use of our tax money into creating opportunities

for everyone.Democratic socialists believe that the

economy and society should be run demo-cratically, to meet public needs not to make profits for a few.

If you're tired of the rich getting richer, consider socialism.

13 State Constitution amendments

The first two times I saw the amendments published in a local newspaper, I read through the article twice – once incredu-lously, the second more studiously and took notes to try to understand what was being proposed – to no avail. There is no under-standing or reasoning behind these propos-als presented as they are, other than to con-fuse, obfuscate, and trick voters into voting for some things / rules no one wants, and no legislator wants to be blamed for. This is an example of government at its worst.

I STRONGLY urge every voter to vote “NO” on all 13 items. None of these need to be elevated to the level of incorporation into the state’s constitution, but should be addressed individually by the legislature, where each elected official must take a pub-lic stand for or against each item. Vote “NO” to the process which only serves to benefit, via power and/or money, to a few, and takes rights / power away from the people of the state of Florida.

Horoscopes'The Cat in The Hat' at Riverside Theatre

VERO BEACH — The children are mov-ing to the big stage at Riverside Theatre. The Cat in The Hat will run on the Stark Stage, the theater’s main stage, Oct. 4-6.

“We decided this year to present the kid’s shows on the main stage,” said Marketing Director Oscar Sales. “It not only offers the opportunity for more people to come, as many of the performances at the Anne Morton were selling out, but it was done primarily to give the kids the experience of performing on the same stage as the profes-sional actors. We are a teaching facility after all. We did the kids shows on the Stark this summer and they really loved the experi-ence.”

The Cat in the Hat is a 1957 children’s book written and illustrated by Theodor Geisel under the pen name Dr. Seuss. Mr. Geisel wrote the book as part of a debate on the usefulness of traditional children’s books like Dick and Jane. Mr. Geisel was challenged to come up with something more entertaining that would hold the attention of children and make them want to read.

Part of the challenge was to also come up

with characters who were not “abnormally courteous and unnaturally clean.” Mr. Geis-el sought to create children who behave nat-urally, and sometimes misbehave.

Mr. Geisel was given a list of words that the book should teach children, and he decided to base his story on the first two words on the list that rhymed, “cat” and “hat.”

The story involves a cat who shows up on a rainy day to entertain young Sally and her brother. Along with his two companions, Thing One and Thing Two, the cat wrecks the house and then works to clean it up

before Sally’s mother returns home. The cast features four Riverside Theatre

apprentices alongside two local children. Theo Blumstein plays the cat, Ben Lundy is Thing One, Sofia Tosches is Thing Two, Lily Warner is the fish, Chantal Werner plays Sally, and David Callahan plays Sally’s brother.

“We are pleased to be offering our fun-filled take on such a classic book,” said director Kevin Quillinan. “Most everybody has experienced this book as a child, an adult reading it to a child, or both, so we know this show will warm the hearts and delight the imaginations of our audiences. This will be the perfect ‘first show’ for the next generation of theatre lovers to experi-ence.”

The creative team includes Emily Perry (scenic design), Anna Hillbery (costume design), Noah Parsons (lighting design), Andrew Stroud (sound design), Anna Cable (props design) and Keelin Higgins (stage manager).

Riverside Theatre is located at 3250 Riv-erside Park Drive, Vero Beach.

Performances are Oct. 4 and 5 at 7 p.m., and Oct. 6 at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can purchased by calling the Riverside Box Office at (772) 231-6990 or online at www.riversidetheatre.com.
