Texting and driving now primary offense in Florida

BREVARD COUNTY — We’ve all seen the “don’t text and drive” campaigns, but how many of us actually drive hands-free? Well, starting on July 1, police officers will have the right to pull over drivers for texting and driving.

The new bill, which was recently signed into law by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, makes texting and driving a primary offense.

Back in 2013, texting and driving was signed into law as a secondary offense, meaning police officers could only cite drivers for texting if pulled over for a different violation, according to Kim Smith, educa-tion and safety coordinator for the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization.

The State House voted 108-7 in favor of a bill that makes texting and driving a primary offense, according to nonprofit Bike/Walk Central Florida’s website.

BREVARD COUNTY – “Some focus on darkness, some focus on light. What you choose to see will change your life,” Ron Lewis writes in his book “Missing Pieces,” which encapsulates his own philosophy of life.

He draws many parallels between his characters and his own life. With a childhood riddled with abuse endured at the hands of a violent stepfather, Mr. Lewis has found a way to turn tragedy into art.

MERRITT ISLAND — Protecting our skin should be second nature, especially as we live in a hot climate with an unforgiving sun.

Instead of lathering on lotions and soaps with chemicals that can give an unpleasant reaction, using products with natural ingre-dients can only benefit our skin.

Shop owner Tawny Brown of Island Girl Natural Beauty first got into using natural remedies for her own personal battle with sensitive skin and eczema.

“I’d been making natural products for many years as a result of my own skin sensi-tivities,” Mrs. Brown said. “After I lost my job of 24 years, I was invited to set up as a vendor at a local health event and that’s where my inspiration began.”

Shortly after starting Island Girl Natural Beauty, Mrs. Brown partnered with massage therapist Shacara Wynn, who specializes in deep tissue, cupping and relaxation massag-es.

While currently located at the Merritt Square Mall, Island Girl Natural Beauty will shortly move to an online presence when its lease is up on July 31. Moving products online will allow Mrs. Brown and Ms. Wynn to attend more local events, such as Trade Shows, Bridal Shows, Expos and other events throughout the state.

“We make natural bath, body and skin care products, such as salt scrubs, whipped body

butters, lotions, soaps, bath soaks and soy candles,” Mrs. Brown said. “Our aromathera-py jewelry is pretty popular. We offer month-ly ‘make-and-take’ classes for jewelry, per-fume and soaps.”

Patrons will find essential oils and natural, organic ingredients in each product, accord-ing to Mrs. Brown.

The prices at Island Girl Natural Beauty are very competitive.

“We like to make our products affordable so the average person can enjoy them,” Mrs. Brown said.

While salt scrubs, tank tops and body but-ter costs are in the $20-$25 range, items such as insect repellent, soap bars and pain relief cream can range from $6-$10.

Island Girl Natural Beauty offers a range of jewelry from earrings and necklaces to brace-lets. The aromatherapy jewelry is hand-made using lava stones as the diffuser.

“I’ve spent many years learning to make products for myself and my family, and spent a lot if time researching to find the best ingre-dients to create products that help address various skin conditions, as well as offering our customers an in-home spa experience,” Mrs. Brown said.

“Our most popular selling items are our ultra moisturizing whipped shea and coco-nut body butter and our soaps. We have goat milk and oatmeal and shea butter soaps,” she added. “So many products on the market have harsh chemicals and ingredients that can cause a lot of problems. What I learned over time is a lot of the irritations I was feel-

ing on my own skin was a direct result of the products I was using. That prompted me to start making the products for myself.”

Island Girl Natural Beauty is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. It is located at 777 Merritt Island Causeway, Suite

No. 149 (next to Macy’s) until July 31.From August and on, you can find Island

Girl Natural Beauty products online or at local events by visiting www.islandgirlsnatur-albeauty.com.

Lovebug tipI have a suggestion for when the love

bugs hit again. I spray Lysol turpentine cleaner on my car until it dissipates and then use a soft bristled bush to wipe them off. It’s easy and it helps it look nice. I thought that might help someone.

Should I buy a Chevrolet? While driving my Chevrolet, the brake

and anti-lock brake system lights came on. I took it to the local Chevrolet dealer and

during the next three weeks I talked with the service adviser numerous times. They could not find the problem. They sent their mechanic to school for two days and he learned nothing. They called the district management and they were no help.

After three weeks I paid a very high bill for parts and labor and drove home only to find the brake and ABS lights still on and 18 gallons of my gas used. At home I called the General Motors company headquarters. They too were no help.

Should I buy a Chevrolet? Absolutely not! Why buy a vehicle that can’t be repaired?

Consider a vasectomy I know only too well that many young

men dream of a life with the woman of their dreams that includes a lifetime of raising their happy family together. Too often, though, many find out too late that their dream has instead become a nightmare. Indeed, it is rare that the children you and your mate conceive together will still be liv-ing with both biological parents on their 18th birthday. It is far more likely that

today’s “father” role will be reduced to child support payments, endless bickering and court dates. Should you dare to complain about this state of affairs, you will likely be admonished to shut up and “man up.”

This is something you need to think about before you become a father. I would suggest that a smart man would choose a vasectomy rather than go through a life-time of needless misery brought on by a moment of passion. Having had a vasecto-my many years ago, I have no regrets and highly recommend the procedure.

If you do consider a vasectomy, I strongly recommend you act sooner rather than later. Because of the recent intensification of our ongoing abortion debate, one of the side effects to this debate are the many leg-islative proposals that, if passed, would make vasectomies illegal. Act while you can.

Teachers don’t deserve higher sal-aries

I am so sick and tired of Brevard county teachers complaining about not making enough money.

You knew what teachers made before you became one, why are you complaining now? Teachers do not work a 40 hour week and they only work nine months. Between weekends, holidays, personal, sick and vacation days, it is not even eight months. On top of that, they get healthcare and retirement.

Try working in the corporate world for a while and see how you will survive. You work a minimum of 40 hours. You work nights and weekends on the phone and computer. Vacation? Forget about it. Yep, you work then. Healthcare benefits and

retirement, only if you are lucky. My brother worked in the corporate

world for 20 years until a life changing event made him change careers and he became a teacher. He said it is the best part-time job he ever had. He works hard on the weekends and the summer, and he gets so mad when teachers in his district start com-plaining about how hard they work.

He said every teacher should work in a real job and then become a teacher to see how really hard they work. He wants to wring their necks every time they com-plain.

Teaches should be given a raiseIt’s a disgrace that the Brevard County

Public Schools that they cannot give their hardworking teachers a raise. What a dis-grace.

It must just be utter contempt and cor-ruption at this point. It’s disgusting that we cannot pay these teacher what they should be paid. Who do you think educates the future of America? Preschool teachers need to be pay for, public school teachers are definitely underpaid, overworked and under appreciated by our superintendent and school board. Do you not understand? If you don’t educate the future we’re all in trouble. For the past 15 years it’s been terri-ble.

Look yourselves in the mirror and pay our teachers.

Women and children under attackWomen and children seem to be under

attack in America, especially in states like Alabama. What is wrong with people? Let me just say this, no one is “pro-abortion”. I haven’t heard one pro-choice person say they are “pro-abortion”. It’s called pro-choice for a reason.

But I guess a bunch of men and silly women are following in their footsteps of taking away women’s rights again.

Women and children are under attack in America. We should be ashamed, speak up and help fight back.

RE: High school from homeFlorida does have options for high school

students to earn a diploma online. FLVS is just one of many.

Students can also earn their AA in high school with online classes through the col-lege without ever having to earn a high school diploma. Thousands of home schooled students in Brevard have already taken advantage of this option in the past few decades.

Testosterone helps more than musclesLow Testosterone - high blood pressureIn an Italian study, researchers compared blood pressure with levels of testosterone in men. Men with high blood pressure were found to have 14 to 25% lower levels of testosterone compared to the men who have normal blood pressure. Conversely, in another study, men with testosterone levels 30 to 50% above normal had more incidence of high blood pressure. Men with high blood pressure should have their testosterone levels checked. Maintaining optimal levels of zinc, 15 to 20 mg a day and regular exercise, proved to be helpful in keeping testosterone levels normal.

The bill also creates a provision for work zones and school zones in that drivers must remain hands-free while in those areas.

“The other little kink in it is that it strictly covers texting,” Ms. Smith explained. “It rules out if you’re using your GPS, and if you’re sta-tionary it’s not going to be a violation... so there are still deficiencies with the law but it is an upgrade from where we were.”

A warning period will begin July 1, with citations going into effect Jan. 1, 2020. In school and work zones, citations can start to be handed out on Oct. 1.

A first violation will be issued at $30 with court fees up to $108. A second violation within five years is a $60 fine, plus court costs.

“People don’t understand that at the speeds we travel, the time it takes you to look down and back up, even for a quick second, you’ve traveled the length of one, two, or three foot-ball fields,” Ms. Smith said. “That’s quite a distance that you’re traveling and you don’t even realize. I think humans, by nature, over-estimate their abilities.”

According to the Signal Four Analytics website (accessed by Ms. Smith), in 2017 Brevard County had issued 30 texting while driving tickets while in 2018 it decreased to 28 tickets. The driver had been pulled over for a different violation, but the officer was able to prove that texting had been involved, Ms. Smith added. The Signal Four Analytics website is a state site for crash data and viola-tions.

The same website also stated that in 2018,

Brevard County recorded 15,145 crashes that ranged from a fender bender to a fatality.

“Directly related to those crashes, I was able to find five where texting and driving was cited as a violation in that crash,” Ms. Smith said. “Then I went out and counted how many of those [15,145] crashes reported distracted driving, and that came to 1,581. Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean they were texting, but there was some kind of distrac-tion.”

Although texting may not always be proved as a violation, a driver could still be cited with careless driving, a failure to main-tain single lane, following too closely or speeding, Ms. Smith said.

“A lot of the other violations could be something being cited but what caused that was the person messing with their phone,” Ms. Smith added.

bra textbook is peppered among formulas and problem sets with positive affirmations and motivating sentences like “Dream Big, Plan Big” or “Fertilize a dream.”

“My birth dad left me this book. It’s the only connection that I have to him,” Mr. Lewis said. “I started looking at this book when I was in third grade while living with my stepfather.”

Mr. Lewis’ real father died when Ron was a baby. He has no memory of him, but formed a characterization of him through his father’s writings.

“When I had to endure the beatings and the yelling, I would sneak away and grab this book,” Mr. Lewis said. “[Fred] hated books in the house. If you had a book in the house, you were useless. He graduated from the sixth grade and he never thought education was worth it.”

As an 11-year old, Mr. Lewis felt a kin-dred connection with his birth father and used the affirmations as encouragement to study the math inside the book.

“By the end of sixth grade I could do algebra, geometry, any kind of math, you name it,” Mr. Lewis said.

Mr. Lewis went on to become a math teacher for 40 years in Brevard County. He maintained the unsullied, optimistic mind-set throughout his life and through his teaching career.

“All of those years, what I tried to do was teach them to take the ‘im’ off ‘impossible,’” Mrs. Lewis said. “I wasn’t just teaching them the math skills, I was teaching them

how to overcome anything.”Mr. Lewis’ mindset is that of a constant

optimist, a rare payoff given his arduous upbringing. He credits his mother’s strong constitution throughout her painful mar-riage to Mr. Emmons and the inspiration he and his family gained in their eventual escape from his nightmarish household.

“Mom would have this can under the front porch and whenever we got extra money, I would get a couple extra pennies from picking blueberries, we would put the money in the jar and save until we had enough to buy a car and get us out of there,” Mr. Lewis said. “It took six years, but she was finally able to do it.”

They relocated to Brockton, Massachu-setts. Mr. Lewis’ stepfather later died in prison.

When he decided to write “Missing Piec-es,” a fictional depiction of some of the harsher aspects he endured, he channeled a broken childhood into the characters that form the plot of the novel.

“I took that concept of that voice in your head and how to change that voice, your thoughts, so that you change your world,” Mr. Lewis said.

“Missing Pieces” is the story of a nine-year-old boy, the victim of a crime gone awry, who wakes up with no memory of his past. He’s placed in protective custody in Florida with a new name, Jace Burke, and a family for six years until the murder of Aunt Betsy, who kept Jace safe, unearths his past and links the terrible crime to the abuse his mind has shut out. Together with his foster sister, Cailey, they work to solve the mystery of who killed Aunt Betsy in a small town with big consequences.

The antagonist of “Missing Pieces” is a man named Bremble, who is based on Mr. Lewis’s stepfather. He said that channeling his own abuse was a cathartic experience, and that the process was therapeutically rewarding.

“Bremble is in there as an evil character off to the side, but I could see [my stepfa-ther] during the writing,” Mr. Lewis said. “It was good because as I was writing, I came to realize that he is not a part of my life.”

In the truest form of altruism, Mr. Lewis donates the profits from “Missing Pieces” to Nana’s House, a children’s group home for neglected, abused or needy children in Brevard County.

Mr. Lewis is currently working on a sec-ond book, “Josh Out of Darkness”, which further elaborates on his childhood

through new characters; a book he explains was more difficult to write due to the more personal aspects it details.

Perseverance and the result of positive thinking are consistent themes in “Missing Pieces”, which has recently been awarded Best Juvenile Novel in the 2019 Indie Orig-inals Book Competition in Brevard Coun-ty. Mr. Lewis will be among the local authors showcased at IndieCon on June 15 at the Melbourne Auditorium.

“I was my own ship, I was in that sea. The negative stuff around me, it could flood me, but unless I let that stuff get in, nothing would happen,” Mr. Lewis said. “I had to let it get in in order to sink me.”

“Missing Pieces” is available for purchase through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Mr. Lewis’ website www.rhlewisbooks.weebly.com.

Student-athletes required to take ECG test

BREVARD COUNTY — In an effort to keep student-athletes heart health in check, Brevard Public Schools recently announced a new policy in the making that would require electrocardiogram testing prior to winter sports.

Brevard Public Schools signed a Memo-randum of Understanding with local non-profit Who We Play For, and students can be screened for an ECG test for $20. Or, if students qualify for free or reduced lunch, students will be eligible for a free test.

“This has been in development for some time, and is still in development,” said Matt Reed, assistant superintendent for Brevard Public Schools. “The process of finalizing the policy is not done yet, there is still opportunity for parents to weigh in at a couple of school board meet-

ings.”According to a press release, the ECG

test is designed to “help identify athletes who may be at risk for sudden death from loss of heart function” and “...may also assist with diagnosing several different heart conditions.”

Students who would be affected by this requirement are those entering grades 7-12. Athletes will be receiving an ECG Consent/Opt Out Form in their 2019-20 athletic packets. Student athletes are required to complete the ECG Consent/Opt Out Form in order to participate in the 2019-20 school year.

“While we recommend seeking these heart screenings before fall sports, it will be mandatory for winter sports,” Mr. Reed said.

Signing the ECG Consent form gives Who We Play For permission to adminis-ter an ECG test at one of several dates

established in the county.Who We Play For was created by the

teammates of 15-year-old Rafe Macca-rone, of Cocoa Beach High School, after Rafe passed away a day after experiencing sudden cardiac arrest during warm up for soccer practice in 2007.

Who We Play For aims to eliminate preventable sudden cardiac death in young students by providing affordable, non-invasive heart screenings.

If a student’s ECG screening comes back showing a “high risk” or need for a follow-up, they will not be allowed to par-ticipate in athletics until a physician signs a medical release declaring they are cleared to participate.

“We’ve had students collapse from sud-den cardiac arrest each of the last two years,” Mr. Reed said. “It’s probably one of the most common causes of death of high school and student athletes, and the most

obvious heart defects that would lead to sudden cardiac arrest are pretty easy to catch through the types of electrocardio-gram tests that we’re asking students to undergo.”

Brevard Public Schools will hold a Board Workshop in July, a Board Work Session in August and will present a poli-cy to the Board for approval in September.

Until September, Mr. Reed said he hopes to hear feedback from parents whether this policy should be expanded, or whether it’s a good idea before the final vote.

The next and final heart screening will take place from 8-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 27 at Parrish Healthcare Center, 5005 Port St. John Parkway, Suite 2100. To schedule an appointment, call (321) 433-2247.

‘Robin Hood’ to come to life in new adaptation

COCOA BEACH — This weekend, Surfside Playhouse will close its 2018-19 season with a family-friendly, comic adaptation of the legendary tale of Robin Hood.

“Robin Hood Fractured,” the third yearly work in the theater’s “Fractured” series – following “Alice in Wonderland Fractured” and “Wizard of Oz Fractured” – will open Friday, June 14 at 8 p.m. and will run Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through June 23.

Written by Surfside Playhouse Artistic Director Bryan Bergeron, who has com-pleted more than 50 original plays and adaptations, the play will present all the familiar Robin Hood characters and scenes – but with a farcical twist – along with songs with lyrics also written by Bergeron.

“I love taking a familiar story and reshaping it into a comedy,” Mr. Bergeron said of the play, which was inspired by “Fractured Fairy Tales,” a segment of the

1959-1964 Rocky and Bullwinkle TV series.

“Robin Hood Fractured features, what we call ‘Layered Comedy,’” Mr. Bergeron added. “It is family entertainment suitable for children with a comedic layer aimed directly at the adults.”

Theatrical works such as this are one of the things that make Surfside unique in the county, Mr. Bergeron noted.

“Surfside Playhouse presents published and unpublished theatrical entertainment produced with a certain ‘down home’ flair rarely seen in community theater,” Mr. Bergeron said. “Our beachside venue also present concerts, specialty entertainment, films, youth theatre and playwriting com-petitions.”

Friday and Saturday performances of “Robin Hood Fractured” are set for 8 p.m. Sunday matinees will run at 2 p.m.

Adult admission to all shows is $25; the senior, military and student rate is $22; and tickets for children 17 and under are $10. Tickets can be purchased at www.SurfsidePlayhouse.org.

The playhouse is located at 301 Ramp Road in Cocoa Beach.

To learn more, visit the theater’s website as listed above or call (321) 783-3127.

Are you a fan of the Hometown News? Well, we are inviting you to take us along on your next adventure. Whether you take a trip to the Grand Canyon or a cruise to the Bahamas, bring your Hometown News with you and have someone snap a picture.

experiences in an inclusive environment,” said Aaron Collins, artistic director and conductor of the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra. “These sensory-friendly coffee concerts are for audiences of all ages and abilities, including individuals on the autism spectrum, individuals with Alz-heimer’s, and those with sensory sensitivi-ties. The concert takes place in a relaxed environment where audience members are welcome to be who they are and enjoy music together with family and friends.”

Additionally, accommodations will be made available by keeping volume levels lower and lighting soft, according to Mr. Collins, and noise-reduction headphones will be available to use, as well as an adja-cent “quiet room.”

Coffee and doughnuts will be served during the concert.

“We are beyond thrilled to launch this unique partnership. The Brevard Alzhei-mer’s Foundation has done an incredible

amount of work for our community and for years,” Mr. Collins said. “They have an extremely worthy mission and work very hard to provide help, support and services for families affected by Alzheimer’s dis-ease. They have an excellent team of employees who are energized, hard-work-ing, caring and work well together.”

Along with the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation, the Space Coast Symphony Orchestras has partnered with local com-munity organizations to create a unique experience for audience members.

In this new season, Mr. Collins said he looks forward to the expansion of the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra’s educa-tion series, which will be a partnership with the Brevard Zoo and Space Coast Fun 4 Kids.

The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra was formed by Mr. Collins and is com-prised of professional musicians, music educators and mentored amateurs of exceptional ability.

Woody’s Bar-B-Q returns to CocoaCOCOA — After opening its doors

in 2014 in the former Corky Bell’s Sea-food Restaurant location, Woody’s Bar-B-Q of Cocoa and its signature menu of slow-smoked meats and comfort food sides were immediately embraced by the Brevard County community.

A kitchen fire in May 2017 derailed the operation; forcing the restaurant’s closure for nearly two years. Now, the classic Southern barbecue chain is pleased to announce that Woody’s Bar-B-Q of Cocoa reopened its doors on June 3 under new ownership. At the helm is Brevard County entrepreneur and long-time Titusville resident, Hitesh Patel with General Manager, Kevin Dohoney, at his side.

Living out a lifelong entrepreneurial dream, Mr. Patel has owned half a dozen Del Taco locations throughout Brevard County, and currently owns several convenience stores, a hardware store and commercial real estate com-pany. He also works as an agent for Reliance Insurance in Titusville, serves as a Board Member for the local YMCA and is a member of the Titusville Chamber of Commerce.

“I’ve lived in Titusville since 1993, so Cocoa is in my backyard,” said Mr. Patel. “The Woody’s Bar-B-Q brand has an excellent reputation and its for-

mer Cocoa location had a prov-en history of success. I feel extremely optimistic about our reception from Brevard County residents. My General Manager, Kevin, brings a great deal of foodservice experience to the table, including management of a Cheesecake Factory. And I plan to be in the restaurant vir-tually every day; overseeing the operation and getting to know our customers.”

Desiring to own his own full-service restaurant, Mr. Patel was drawn to the Woody’s Bar-B-Q franchise system. Attracted by the structure they provide, he was impressed by the people he met at the Corporate office and, most of all, by the quality of the food they offer their patrons.

“Hitesh brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm to his role as Woody’s Bar-B-Q franchisee,” said Yolanda Mills-Mawman, President and COO of Woody’s Bar-B-Q. “He has built an excel-lent team and plans to carry on the same history of success this location has witnessed in the past. Although, his solid track record as a business owner and his can-do attitude may help build a following that sur-passes what we’ve witnessed here in the past. I know I speak for the entire Cor-

porate Office when I say that Woody’s Bar-B-Q is so happy to be back in Cocoa serving the good people of Bre-vard County.”

Located at 4885 North US Highway 1, Woody’s Bar-B-Q of Cocoa is now open for business. Having applied for a

liquor license, Mr. Patel hopes to have a full bar up and running in time for summer. The restaurant currently boasts an ample sized dining room, with seating enough for 153 customers.

Master the art of growing African VioletsHi everybody.

One of the most intriguing and beautiful houseplant is the Afri-

can violet. These delicate plants are admired by many but a lot of people shy away from purchasing them because they think they are hard to grow. This is not really the case. It is true that they require some attention but then again, most other plants do also.

The first step is to decide what plant you would like to bring home. African Violets come in several colors and some varieties have variegated leaves. As with most flowering plants, is a good idea to buy plants that have some buds that not yet have opened. Make sure the leaves look healthy and green. Once you pur-chase your new plant, you need to trans-plant it into a different pot. Be sure to

choose a pot that is designed for African violets. A regular flowerpot is too deep. Be sure to purchase a potting soil that is designed for African Violets. You also should purchase some small pebbles or stones. You will also need a saucer to place under the pot.

After you have purchased your plants and the supplies you will need, it’s time to do the fun part. Fill your African violet pot about half full with soil and place the newly purchased plant centered in the

pot. Fill the remainder of the space with more soil. Pat the soil down slightly and then add a little more soil to top off the pot. Once your plant is situated, you can add a couple of Jobes plant spikes to the mix. Now, here comes the tricky part. Water your plants by placing tepid water in the plant saucer you purchased. Place the pot in the saucer and allow it to absorb the water for about an hour. Do not water the plant from the top or allow water to touch the leaves.

Since African Violets are native to Afri-ca, they require a humid environment in which to thrive. You can use your saucer to help raise the humidity around your plant. You can achieve this by first placing small stones in the bottom of the saucer. Now, place your pot in the saucer and level the rocks so the pot remains steady.

Now, put some water in the water but be sure the water does not completely cover the stones or touches the bottom of the pot. This water will enhance the humidity around the plant and ensure that it remains happy. Check the plant every few days and water as needed. Always use the above-mentioned method for watering and do not water from the top.

That’s all for this weeks column and I hope you enjoyed it. I will see you next week with more great garden tips and information.
