Free vitamin D, vaca-tions, pool parties, BBQ’s, campfires, flip flops, beautiful evenings and the list goes on. Summer is an array of sunshine all around.

With all this summer fun, lets not forget about summer safety:

Heat-Related Illness:

With the high temperatures, be mindful of heat-related illness and take steps to protect yourself by wearing appropri-ate clothing, drink lots of water, apply

sunscreen and never leave kids or pets unattended in vehicles.

Water Safety:As we all make a splash into pools, beaches or lakes take measures to ensure the safety of yourself and others. Take swim lessons, always swim with a buddy, swim in designated areas marked by lifeguards, never leave a child unattended near wa-ter, do not rely on lifeguards or others to watch over your child, do not swim around drains and suction fittings and wear life jackets if unable to swim or on boats.

Fire Safety:The rain brought us beautiful green

hills and flowers, but now they have turned into dry and brittle vegetation. Remove weeds and keep grass cut, throw away piled up vegetation, stack firewood away from structures, trim dead wood off trees, water adequately to keep plants healthy and green, turn off lights in home when not using them and ensure all appliances are unplugged or turned off when not in use.

The City will celebrate Diamond Bar Day at the LA County Fair on

I was one excited lady when I got to take a behind the scenes look into one of Diamond Bar’s most relaxing businesses,

Massage Envy. Offering massages, facials, and skin treatments, I was there to test out their new breakthrough exfoliating treatment, the Microderm Infusion.

As I opened the entrance door, I was greeting by a friendly receptionist who checked me in and lead me into a cozy room with calming sounds of waves crashing on the seashore. I could have easily drifted into dreamland, but instead was guided into another room where I was met by Regina, the lead Estetician. Be-

fore beginning my treatment, Regina educated me on the Microderm Infu-sion, which in fact does three things: Exfoliates, Clarify’s and Hydrates. Using unrivaled skin care technology, this treatment is a safe and effective way to shed away the old skin and bring forth the new on your face, neck and décolleté.

The machine used during the treatment was what looked like a vacuum with a suctioned hose, topped with a crystal tool. Before Regina started the process, she explained in detail what she would be doing and what I would feel. Her professionalism and knowl-edge gave me confidence that I would end up with amazing results.

Regina started off with cleansing and toning my face. She then went straight into the treatment where she took the crystal tool and pressed it line by line onto my face, neck and décolleté. The 24th annual Wine Soirée, California

Dreamin’, was a resounding success. The Diamond Bar Center was buzzing with over 350 people gathered for an exciting afternoon of festivities all focused on the Diamond Bar Library and literacy in our com-munity.

Each year the Soirée is full of entertaining surprises. This year, there were over 100 silent auction items, a spirited live auction, book auc-tions, raffle prizes, music and a special musical visit from Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps.There were plenty of tastings of savory wines and yummy food from our local restaurants.

The Diamond Bar Library is second of all 86 libraries within the system in circulation with 460,000 volumes moving in and out of the library each year. Additionally, the Diamond Bar Library

ranks eighth in total monthly patronage with a gate count of over 22,000 visitors per month.

All proceeds from the Wine Soirée go to the library. This year, the Diamond Bar Friends of the Library will give approximately $40,000 for much needed materials, programs, books, maga-zines and more. This would not have been possible without the Wine Soirée as well as their two non-profit bookstores, Basically BOOKS.

The City Council unanimously appointed Dan Fox as Diamond

Bar’s next City Manager effective July 10. Fox’s appointment culminates a com-prehensive recruitment and selection process that began in January, soon after current City Manager James DeStefano, announced his plan to retire after 26 years with the City of Diamond Bar. The recruitment yielded 67 applicants. Fox has a background in community development with more than 30 years of experience serving local agencies, including more than 19 years working

for city governments with a “contract services” model similar to Diamond Bar. Since December 2009, he has worked for the City of Laguna Niguel initially as Community Develop-ment Director and most recently as Assistant City Manager. Prior to the City of Laguna Niguel, Fox worked for the neighboring City of Walnut as Community Development Direc-tor from 2004 to 2009. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Cal Poly

Pomona. “I am honored to have been selected as the next City Manager for the City of Diamond Bar and look for-

ward to working with the City Council, City staff, residents and businesses to help this great community celebrate its roots and build a thriving future,” said Fox. When Fox assumes his post on July 10, he will become Dia-mond Bar’s 5th City Manager since its incorporation in April 1989.

Supervisor Hahn Announces Road Improvement Project in Rowland Heights, Diamond Bar

Supervisor Janice Hahn has announced a $3.28 million road improvement

project across two segments of road in Rowland Heights and Diamond Bar. The Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a motion to approve and advertise the project for construction bids. The project will include repaving two sections of road in the unincorporated County community of Rowland Heights and the City of Diamond Bar as well as sidewalk improvements, two upgraded traffic signals, and streel light relocations. One segment in Rowland Heights is along Fullerton Road near the Harbor Boulevard intersection. The second section of the project is along Pathfinder Road

in both Rowland Heights and Diamond Bar including the Brea Canyon Cutoff Road intersection. “My dad prided himself on the quality of the roads in his district and even promised to give a dollar to anyone who could find a pothole in one of his communities,” said Supervisor Hahn. “I appreciate that we are getting to work repaving the roads of the Fourth District and addressing congestion problems in the communities I represent.” Funding for the project will be split between the County of Los Angeles and the City of Diamond Bar with the County contributing $2.86 million and

Diamond Bar contributing $420,000. The construction contract is expected to be awarded in August and construction is expected to begin in October.

Pacific Crest Youth Arts Organization of Diamond Bar is hosting Drum

Corps at the Rose Bowl, taking place at the Rose Bowl Stadium on Saturday, July 1, bringing a dynamic lineup of World and Open Class corps, marking the biggest event of its kind.

The event features more than 1,400 youth in performance with 12 drum and bugle corps, including seven of the nation’s top performing groups. The event is part of the Drum Corps Interna-tional (DCI) Tour, a summer season of 100 events across the United States.

The numbers have been crunched for 2017 and U.S. News & World

Report has released its annual list of the best high schools in the country.

Diamond Bar High School (DBHS) earned a gold medal, as it did last year, ranking 43rd in California and 277th in the United States. Additionally, DBHS placed 105th in STEM high schools. DBHS has been included in the report every year since the publication began its ‘Best High Schools’ search in 2009. More than 28,000 schools were reviewed in all 50 states and the District of Co-lumbia to determine the top public high schools, with more than 650 in California earning a ranking.

U.S. News looked at overall student performance on state-required tests, high school grad-uation rates, and evaluated on how they prepare students for college using participation and performance data from AP and IB exams.

The “2017 America’s Best High Schools” ranking identify the top performing public schools at both the national and the state level and in-clude data on more than 28,000 high schools. DBHS offers an extensive roster of IB and AP courses to provide teens with an opportunity to challenge themselves

with college-level course work during high school. “Our premier high schools continue to be recognized on a national level for preparing students to be academically competitive for the next chapter in their lives,” said Superintendent Dr. Robert Taylor.

The Diamond Bar Community Foundation is proud to provide a grant for $1,000 to Pacific Crest Youth Arts Organization. The grant will be used for Pacific Crest's Outreach program to provide tickets for 50 high school band students from

Diamond Bar and Diamond Ranch High Schools to attend this iconic event.

Once again Diamond Bar has made the top 50 list for the “Safest Cities in California”, coming in

39th, three spots above last years report. Reported by Safewise, a home security and safety advice company, the cities were ranked by reviewing the 2015 FBI crime report statistics and population data.

To identify the safest cities in California, Safewise eliminated all cities with fewer than 10,000 residents as well as any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI. The list was narrowed down based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) in each city per 1,000 residents.

Diamond Bar reported 1.02 Violent Crimes per 1,000 and 14.08 Property Crimes per 1,000. This is significantly low compared to the national average of 29 crimes per 1,000.

The Diamond Bar/Walnut Sheriff ’s Department works hard to keep Diamond Bar as safe as possible and Neighborhood Watch programs have aided the low crime rates. If you see something suspicious do not be afraid to report it.

Tech Trek Finalists Chosen22Community News

The Diamond Bar/Walnut Branch of AAUW (American Association of

University Women) is once again sponsor-ing 7th grade girls to attend Tech Trek, a weeklong Science and Math camp held at UC Irvine during the summer. Three girls have received scholarships to attend the camp and advance their interest in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) subjects. In addition, one girl was chosen as an alternate. The girls were first nominated by their teachers, filled out applications, composed essays, and were interviewed by a panel of AAUW members. The choice was difficult, but the AAUW would like to recognize the following girls who were selected to be Tech Trek campers:
