conomic experts agree that
the current economic downturn began when
a national real estate bubble burst, sending home
prices plunging and signaling the start of a housing crash
that still grips the nation.
Communities across the country have suffered devastating economic
consequences, but Coweta has fared better than most. In fact, when
preliminary census projections were released in the spring of 2010, Coweta

what really sells customers is the
local quality of life.
“We’ve really got the best of
both worlds down here,” Barron
says. “We’ve got the small town
atmosphere that not many places
can match, and we’re close enough
to the big league sports and other
attractions in Atlanta that there’s no
reason not to take advantage of
both.”
Barron points out that other
major attractions, including West
Point Lake and Callaway Gardens,
are less than an hour’s drive away.
“No matter what you want to
do, it’s an easy drive,” Barron says.
“And the traffic from here beats all
the alternatives. I’d advise anybody
to take advantage of these housing
bargains and low interest rates now.
Coweta has always been a great
place to live and now it’s a bargain,
too.”
Those who have called Coweta
home for decades have marveled at
the county’s transformation. Today,
over 50 percent of the population
County showed a growth rate of
three percent and was ranked the
49th fastest-growing county in the
U.S. with more than 10,000
population.
Local real estate professionals
say thanks goes largely to a steady
growth in new business coupled
with a coming boom in health care
facilities and related businesses and
services.
Frank Barron, president of
Newnan’s Lindsey’s Realty, has been
in business for 36 years and says

commutes to work outside the
county. Many have no idea that the
acres of land now covered with
subdivisions were once bursting
with crops.
From its founding in 1826
through the end of World War II,
Coweta’s economy was dominated
by agriculture. Local textile mills
provided a steady market for local
cotton planters, and Coweta’s
abundant peach, corn and produce
crops fed locals and supplied food
for dinner tables across the region.
In the 1970s, the local
agricultural economy was changed
forever when I-85 opened through

Coweta and thousands of people
lured by easy living and easy access
to jobs in Atlanta and at Hartsfield-
Jackson International Airport fell in
love with the county’s rural roots
and postcard-pretty small towns,
including Newnan, Grantville,
Moreland, Senoia, Turin, Sharpsburg
and Haralson.
For three decades Coweta
enjoyed a real estate boom that was
envied statewide. First class dining,
retail and commercial offerings
followed the newcomers as lifestyle
choices expanded. Subdivisions
anchored by golf courses and lakes
became common. Horse farms
multiplied and prospered.
Schools sprang up to serve the
swelling population, and school
officials managed the growth and
finances in a way that keeps
Coweta’s schools consistently among
the state’s leaders in scholarship and
financial stability.

The project has been the spark
for a revitalization of downtown
Senoia and has attracted so much
positive attention that Senoia was
chosen as the site for the 2010 Idea
House, sponsored and promoted by
Southern Living magazine. The Idea
House is expected to draw
thousands of visitors to Senoia over
the summer and fall of 2010.
Real estate experts have long
said the three keys to success are
“location, location, location.” As
long as that remains true, Coweta
will be hard to top.

Gardening Through the

family and tended their yard. As their lives
moved into the summer years they had more
time for gardening. She began to add things
here and there: peony bulbs for 49 cents from
Woolworths downtown, a quince from her
grandmother. He never forgot the beautiful

n 1949, a young couple were
wed in Attapulgus, Ga. on a
December afternoon. They returned to
Newnan as Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence W. Keith Jr.
and built a home on Second Avenue. In the
spring of their married lives, they began their

camellias from their wedding in
south Georgia and joined the
American Camellia Society.
Camellias began to take their place
in the yard, and eventually he
became a camellia judge.
Throughout their summer years,
the garden became a common
passion and, in 1965, the couple
bought the home next door, kept a
portion of the yard and enlarged
their gardens, then resold the house.
Azaleas, dogwoods, spring phlox,
irises, daylilies, tulips, pansies,
daisies, yarrow, Sweet William and
old fashioned roses were planted.
Over the years and into the fall
of their lives, more was added:

cleome, salvia, ajuga, chaste tree,

Today Jane gardens by herself,
but the presence of Lawrence is
there in the plants. A bed beside the
front door, originally Lawrence’s

has become
Jane’s “little

bloom. As
Jane Keith’s
garden so
beautifully
illustrates,
here in
Coweta
County our gardening lives aren’t
limited by the seasons, as there is
something in bloom every season.
Jane joined the Driftwood
Garden Club in 1963, and she says
the group has always been divided
equally between “arrangers” and
“growers.” It is a symbiotic
relationship; the arrangers need the
growers to create, and the growers
feel the joy of sharing their creation.
Our climate allows for many choices
for the “growers” to include in their
beds and borders. These can be
shared with the “arrangers” to be cut
for a large spray or small posy to
grace their
interiors.
The
following plant
list is
specifically for
Coweta County
and is
arranged
loosely by
bloom time
and includes
many of the
plants in the
Keith yard.
(Bulbs and
hellebores are
listed with the
perennials
since they
usually return year after year. There
may be some instances when your
perennials behave like annuals and
vice versa.)
When choosing any plant for
your garden, consider how it will fit
with the rest of your plantings in
addition to requirements such as
light and soil type.
