Year 3 Autumn 2

Mathematics Mastery We will be developing mental strategies for addition and subtraction. As well as calculating with column addition and subtraction. We will use this knowledge and apply it to understanding how to solve problems. Also, we will be measuring with increasing accuracy using different measurements. We will look at calculating perimeter of 2D shapes and use this to measure and compare length. Our focus will also be applying our knowledge of length to solve problems.

Physical EducationWe will be continuing to build our stamina using endurance training and introducing a variety of endurance tests, such as the Cooper Run. We will record and compare our endurance results which will be used as a baseline. . We will explore a variety of Invasion Games to extend our knowledge of teamwork and attacking and defending principles. There will be an emphasis on understanding why we would attack or defend at certain points of the game.

ScienceWe will investigate what a force is and how they affect objects. We will find out how magnets react with each other and other materials, the strength of magnets and how they are used in everyday life.

GeographyPupils will learn the capital cities and flags of European countries. We will learn about human and physical geography; exploring some of the recognisable man-made landmarks alongside the longest rivers and biggest mountain ranges in Europe. The driving question asks pupils to reflect on what they have learnt about the capital cities, rivers, mountain ranges, man-made landmarks and decide which they find the most impressive and why.

Additional Experiences

‘Europe Day’ including trying different European foods and clothing.

Computing We will develop a number of strategies for finding errors in programs and recognise a number of common bugs in software. We will make attempts to fix the bugs.

Religious Education

We will be looking at messages from Jesus, how he shared his messages, what is recorded in the Bible and what we can learn from this.

This half term our driving question is:Which is the most impressive, the natural or the man-made landmarks of Europe?

Music

We will sing simple songs from memory and recall short rhythmic patterns using musical instruments.

EnglishWe will be reading fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. In writing we will be focusing on character and setting description and using this to change aspects of the story we are reading. We will create our own fairy tale by either changing the characters, setting or plot twist. We will also be focusing on Year 3 common exception words and spelling these accurately.

French We will be learning how to say the days and months in French and use this in simple conversations.

Art and Design technology

We will design, make and evaluate our own packaging and biscuits using a range of materials. We will be working on how to improve our design as well as suggesting improvements for our peers.

PSHEWe will find out more about accepting differences, develop skills to include others, recognise when someone is being bullied, learn the importance of using kind words and solving problems and conflicts in friendships.
