We are planning to hold our managers meetings at community venues across the district. Just last month we received a number of queries regarding your new doors and windows. You were concerned that they were not closing securely. In fact the new doors being installed on our maintenance schedule are very secure. See page 10 for further details.

Other feedback involved customers calling our switchboard to discuss their repair work and waiting for unreasonably long periods of time before they were dealt with. We have followed this up and provide further details on page 13.

We have also responded to a range of other queries you have raised over the last month and details can be found on page 3 (gas servicing) and Page 11 (waste).

Partnership workWe are reproducing this letter that appeared in the Leamington Observer on May 27, 2010 to show that when we work together to address issues in the community, it does achieve results and recognition.

Group does a good jobI have been a member of the St Paul’s & Kennedy Square

Residents Association and Neighbourhood Watch ever since

its inauguration some five years or so ago.

However, I must make it clear that I am writing this to you

on my own behalf, so the following in based on my own

observations and experience over that period.

These days it is quite fashionable to lambaste representatives

of public bodies, elected or otherwise. The group I belong to

has frequent contact with such people, either through their

attendance at our regular meetings or in ad-hoc meetings

to discuss issues in detail. Following early years of official

personnel comings and goings, and a period of welcome

stability I believe that we now have an excellent team assisting

our group.

I am going to mention a few names that stand out in my view –

acting sergeant John Belcher and all his Safer Neighbourhood

Team, particularly Paul Sidwell, Phil Sheen, Margaret Allen and

Andy Smith of Warwick District Council, together with their

boss Dave Ward, not forgetting Edward Protheroe and the rest

of the team in the Highways Department at Shire Hall. I must

also mention Councillors Janice Dean and Bob Crowther for

their active input and practical help with issues. They have

never once sought endorsement of their party for their efforts,

but they have demonstrated to me in a quiet way why we

need local politicians.

DO YOU WANT TO JOIN OUR TENANTS PANEL? In the last issue of Home News, we told you about the national standards that Warwick District Council, as Landlords, has to comply with as a requirement of the Tenant Service Authority. As part of that, we are looking for tenants to represent their own neighbourhood and

get involved in making decisions and managing their own homes.

You might already be involved in a residents association or have attended forums or housing meetings and wished you could have more of a say – well now is your chance! It will involve a

minimum of four meetings a year, but it will put you in the know and allow you to contribute to decisions and shape the future of housing.

If this sounds like something you would be interested in, then please contact Margaret Allen and she will give you a bit more information.

planning teams, as well as the local Police turned out to meet local residents and discuss the work they are doing in the community. We hope to arrange more events like this in the future, so please contact Margaret Allen with your ideas and suggestions.

A great example of neighbours working together is with our Tenants Initiative Fund, where you can apply for funding to improve your local area.

As long as it has agreement from your neighbours and everyone will benefit from it, then there is no reason why you can’t put in a bid for some money to help you achieve it. The residents of Turpin Court did just that and now their communal garden area looks amazing! It has been cleaned up, trimmed back and has beautiful flowers and shrubbery growing.

Please contact Margaret Allen, for more details of the fund, she will explain how to fill in the application form and ensure that you get your bid in before 1st September 2010.

RESIDENTS ASSOCIATIONShuckburgh Grove in Lillington is the latest area to set up their own Residents Association, meeting once a month. Margaret Allen, Tenant Participation Officer says, “We can get more done and make things happen, when you work together with your neighbours.”

Get out and aboutHead to your local park or garden, there are plenty in the district and all offering something different. St Nicholas Park has a great play area for all ages, as well as acres of open space for playing ball or Frisbee. Newbold Comyn has a skate Park as well as an adventure play area for older children. You can also enjoy following the nature trail.

You could enjoy a leisurely afternoon in Jephson Gardens, feeding the ducks or looking around the Glasshouse. There’s even a sandy area at Mill Gardens for children to build sandcastles. Also, over the Summer there will be free music in our parks on Sundays from 3 – 5pm, in either Jephson Gardens, St Nicholas Park or Abbey Fields, just check the website address below, or see notice boards in the parks for details.

Get CulturalWhy not visit the Art Gallery & Museum in the Pump Rooms for free? Enjoy the exhibitions, interactive displays and activities for children, or follow a trail round the art gallery.

Get ActiveIf you need action then get up to the BMX bike track at Campion Hills where you can ride the hills and try a few tricks! With beautiful views over the whole of Warwickshire and just a few minutes’ walk from Newbold Comyn, you can take a picnic and make a day of it. Don’t forget swimming for under 16s is still free, at the moment, at any of our swimming pools! Just go along and register for a Get Active Pass for £2.

And..If you live near Packmores, the Gap, the Lillington Chain, or any of the Children’s Centres then don’t forget to check their notice boards for activities planned during the summer, or call into your nearest Warwickshire Direct for information – there’s lots to choose from!

BLUE PLAQUEAWARD

The family of the late Sir Terry Frost were very proud to witness the unveiling

of a Blue Plaque to commemorate him at Stamford Gardens.

The Blue Plaque Scheme is administered by English Heritage and it commemorates famous people who were born, lived or worked on a particular site or building.

Sir Terry Frost was born on October 13th, 1915 in a house at the site of where Stamford Gardens is. He first started to paint as a prisoner of war and then on his return to England, attended the Camberwell School of Art. His career involved lecturing in art, working as an artist in residence and then he went on to become Professor of Painting at the University of Reading.

His work is exhibited at galleries across the country and is held in corporate and private collections around the world. You might recognise this example of Terry Frost’s work.

Sir Terry Frost was elected Royal Academician in 1992 and received �� ""#$��%�� September 2003.

For those of you living in and around Stamford Gardens, you now know that your home is well connected to a very interesting and historic local man!

Generalist advisers are volunteers who are trained to check benefit entitlements, to discuss unfair dismissal, to help draw up a personal budget, to negotiate with creditors, to advise on a notice to quit, to deal with emergencies…..and much more.

CAB also has paid in-house specialists in housing, debt and benefits. These caseworkers can prepare and/or represent at court hearings, draw up a financial statement, give a range of options on bankruptcy and Debt Relief Orders for example.

Warwick District CAB can help you deal with all sorts of problems. It is a charity which gives free independent, impartial and confidential advice.

Get Digital is a Government funded project providing computer equipment and digital skills training to older people in England who are living in sheltered accommodation.

We have successfully obtained £8,000 funding for tenants of Yeomanry Close, Warwick and Chandos Court in Leamington Spa.

The grant will be used to purchase computers along with the necessary accessories and software. As part of the programme, tutors will be provided to lead training sessions on computer and digital skills.

This will open up a whole new world of communication for those in sheltered housing, where they can write letters, send emails and browse the internet. It will help them to become much more independent, keeping in touch with friends and family as well as being able to access council services online.

If you are looking for free and easy ways to stop wasting energy and save money then just contact the Energy Saving Trust which is a non-profit organisation.

The website is packed full of ideas and suggestions as well as links to other useful websites, with suggestions for making small changes that could save you money across the year, such as;

Saving Energy and reducing your bills

Turn off lights, only boil the water you need and use energy saving bulbs.

Saving Water

If each person in a family of four replaces a bath a week, with a 5 minute shower you could reduce your energy bill by between £5 - £15 per year. And if you use a bowl

for washing up, instead of a running tap, you could save about £25 a year.

Reducing Waste

Find ways to make your food go further, use up leftovers and don’t add to the third of all our food ending up as waste!

WINDOWSThe new windows have safety catches so that you cannot push them wide open without releasing the catch first. If you are cleaning the window for instance, you would need to open the window as far as the catch allows, pull the window slightly back, hold the catch and then fully open the window. When pushing the window open, always push on the frame and not the glass.

WINDOWS WITH BUILT-IN RESTRICTORSThese can be opened until the restrictor engages, but to open fully;For side hung windows – pull the window a fraction then press and hold the metal tab, whilst slowly opening the window.

For top hung windows – press down the tab built into the hinge, then press the tab built into the opposite hinge and the window will then fully open.

DOORSTo close the door, pull it to with the handle straight until the latch lock engages, then lift the handle fully upwards to engage the top and bottom pairs of dead bolts. To engage the centre dead bolt, turn the key clockwise and this will fully lock the door. If the key won’t turn completely then the handle has not been sufficiently raised.

To unlock the door, turn the key anti-clockwise, press the handle fully downwards and this will release the top and bottom deadbolts.

You might have recently had your doors and windows replaced on our annual maintenance schedule and been given a demonstration and an instruction booklet on how to use them. However, we have had a number of queries from residents about how to close and secure them correctly, so here is a quick guide for you as a reminder.

COMMUNAL LIVINGIf you live in a flat, or property with shared access, it is important to be aware of how your actions can affect those around you. Here are a few areas where small actions can make big improvements to the quality of your life and the relationship you have with your neighbours!

Is it safe?Many people do worry about the health risks of asbestos, but as long as it is not damaged, flaking or producing dust, it is unlikely to cause you any problems.

The Council has a survey database to maintain a register of properties that have asbestos, so that we can monitor it. Where asbestos is in good condition, it is unlikely to be disturbed or removed.

It is important for you to be aware of any asbestos that may be in your home and it has been found in the following,

� Vinyl floor tiles � Pipe lagging � Rain water gutter and down pipes

� Roof boards � Some wall and ceiling coatings

� Flue pipes and outlets � Fire insulating panels � Gaskets and seals to boilers

Do you have jobs around your house or garden that need doing? Are you finding it difficult to get help?

Age Concern and Warwickshire County Council have launched a new Handy Person scheme to provide repairs and maintenance around the home and garden.

The new service is for residents aged 50 and over, or those who have a learning, physical or sensory disability of any age.

The service offered could provide help for anything from fixing a dripping tap, to repairing a fence, or moving furniture around to taking down curtains...those tricky jobs in hard to reach places where another pair of hands will make all the difference.

Funded by Warwickshire County Council and supported by the district council, the cost is £18 per hour or £5 per hour if you qualify for means tested benefits.

HELP IS AT HAND

Asbestos in the HomeMany homes in the district, built up to the 1990’s, including our own council housing, may contain asbestos. It is a natural mineral, made up of small fibres which are really strong and resistant to heat, which is why it was first used in building materials.

There may also be an announcement when you first ring through to warn you of long waiting times, for example during elections, or just after council tax letters have gone out. That way you can decide whether to call back or hold on.

TAKECOVERSummer is here and after a long cold winter, it’s great to open the windows and soak up the sunshine! It should be a happy carefree time, but it does mean that you should be vigilant about your home security, don’t give burglars the chance to ruin your sunny mood.

It is important to protect your belongings against theft as well as loss, damage, fire and flooding. If you have insurance, whether it’s the Tenants Contents Scheme or another you will be able to claim help with repairing and replacing your belongings. However without insurance, you would not receive any financial help from the Council with repairs or replacements, which would cause upset and expense at an already difficult time.

Warwick District Council is working together with Aviva to offer Tenants Contents Insurance that is affordable and easy to arrange and have recently negotiated improved cover on the policy at no extra cost. If you have already taken out Tenants Contents Insurance, your policy will be upgraded automatically - no action is required by yourself. If you wish to take out a policy with us, it is worth noting that you can pay for it weekly and there is no excess to pay if you make a claim.

GARDENING NEWSAre you wondering what to do with your garden and need some help? If money allows there are many books available including the series “ Be your own expert “ at very reasonable prices, also weekly gardening magazines as well as TV and Radio programmes are extremely helpful and don’t forget the Local Library. Your garden should be what YOU wish it to be.

It’s not an exact science and gardening rules can be bent - I am quite happy to do so and usually with great success! If low maintenance is your aim, slabs could be the answer, second hand ones could probably be bought at a reasonable price, though paving would look nicer if funds allow.Some tubs filled with Pelargoniums (Geraniums) for the summer. I like bright one-colour plants as they make more of an impact, changing in the autumn to Pansies possibly - but do look out for white fly in the winter time.

A comfortable seat in the garden is a must, it will invite you out if only for a while with your cup of coffee and

you may begin to think of raising a slab or two and planting some shrubs. All my clematis are stunning even after the severe winter they endured as did Exochorda (The Bride) Choisya (Tenata) Choisya (Sundance) Erysiumum (Bowles mauve) & Fremontedendron (California Glory). They have proved their worth as indeed have many others. If you haven’t already got them do try some of them and I promise you will be delighted, you will get so much pleasure and joy from them, the Peace and Solace you receive from a garden is very welcome in these challenging times.
