How to tie everything in together for a cozy look?An area rug is a great option, however it’s a goodrule of thumb to keep a 12 to 16-inch border aroundthe room’s perimeter. The front legs of your furniture should be sitting on the rug area. If you are identifying a specific area, within a larger room, such as the case with an L-shape living room/dining room, area rugs can create adecisive boundary. What size chandelier to buy?For every foot of the width of the room, multiplythat number by two for the diameter (in inches) ofthe chandelier that will work in that particular room.If the width of your room is 12 feet, then your
chandelier should be 24 inches indiameter ( 12’ x 2 = 24” )Don’t know where to hang pictures?Since we are mostly in a sittingposition, admiring artwork, whenever we’re in a room: at atable, on the sofa, on a chair, theartwork should be approx 8 to 10inches above the top of a the sofa,credenza, or headboard. For otherwalls or stairways, you can hangart so that the middle of the painting/picture is approx 65
inches from the floor or steps. A person of averageheight finds it easier to stoop down, to look at a picture, than to stretch up.Don’t know what to do with all those family/school pictures?You are the recipient of the perpetual school pictures. They are such cute kids and you love themdearly. Don’t keep adding their pictures to the collection. Replace them with the most recent ones.Coordinate the frames to be similar to create an uncluttered look. (i.e. all silver frames)Save all those large framed wedding, school, andfamily photographs for the upstairs hallway, homeoffice, or den.
Your accessories or collectibles are cluttered allover the house?Create a bigger impact by grouping a smaller collection (of 3 pieces) together on a table or on ashelf. (i.e. seashore treasures on one shelf)Collecting too much stuff?Learn to edit your room by taking 30% of youraccessories away, such as candles, picture framesand knickknacks. That will leave room to add items(from your inventory) as the décor develops overtime.Don’t have a green thumb?Using silk or artificial greenery is fine, but only ifyou rotate them on a regular basis or with the seasons. Dusty & outdated arrangements make aroom appear old & stuffy. A spray bottle of silkcleaner is available at any department store or floralshop. Or fill your laundry tub with warm soapywater and dip the flowers in, swish them aroundgently, rinse, and hang to dry.Don’t know what to do & how to do it?Decorating without help is difficult and sometimes emotional. Hire a professional interior decorator, contractor, or architect. Theseprofessionals come to your project with an unbiased, workable plan: your friends and family don’t.
