simple guidelines

to keep your wood

fireplace burning

brightly, and safely.

1. Only burn dry,cured wood, logs that

have been split, stacked, and dried

for eight to 12 months. Cover your

log pile on top, but leave the sides

open for air flow.

Hardwoods such as hickory, white

oak, beech, sugar maple, and white

ash burn longest, though dry fire-

wood is more important than the

species. Less dense woods like

spruce or white pine burn well if

sufficiently dry, but you’ll need to

add more wood to your fire more

often.

2. Burn firewood and only

firewood! Crates, lumber, construc-

tion scraps, painted wood, or other

treated wood releases chemicals

into your home, compromising air

quality. Log starters are fine for

getting your wood fireplace going,

but they burn very hot; generally

only use one at a time.

3. Close the damper when not

using your wood fireplace to

prevent warm indoor air, and the

dollars you’re spending to heat it,

from rushing up the chimney.

4. Keep bifold glass doors openwhen burning a fire to allow

heat to get into the room. On a

factory-built, prefab wood fireplace

with a circulating fan, keep doors

closed to prevent unnecesary heat

loss.

5. Have a chimney cap installed toprevent objects, rain, and snow

from falling into your chimney, and

to reduce downdrafts. Caps have

side vents so smoke escapes. A

chimney sweep usually provides

and can install a stainless steel cap,

which is better than a galvanized

metal one because it won’t rust.

Caps cost $50 to $200.

6. Replace a poorly sealing

damper to prevent heat loss. A

top-mounted damper that also

functions as a rain cap provides a

tighter closure than a traditional

damper for your wood fireplace.

7. Install carbon monoxide

detectors and smoke detectors in

your house, near your wood

fireplace as well as in bedroom

areas.

8.Get your chimney cleaned twicea year if you burn more than three

cords of wood annually. A cord is 4

feet high by 4 feet wide by 8 feet

long, or the amount that would fill

two full-size pickup trucks.

9. To burn a fire safely, build itslowly, adding more wood as it

heats. Keep the damper of your

wood fireplace completely open to

increase draw in the early stages.

Burn the fire hot, at least occasio-

nally, with the damper all the

way open to help prevent smoke

from lingering in the fireplace and

creosote from developing.

An eclectic decorating style is easiest to define by

what it is not. Eclectic style doesn't rigidly adhere to

any one major style. It is characterized by a free-

dom of expression and a vibrant individuality. If

you were the kind of child who deliberately

coloured outside the lines, this is the style for you.

Eclectic style is also great for those individuals who

love too much. For example, if you love the rich-

ness ofAsian and the serenity of contemporary, you

may find these two styles combine in a unique way

in your personal eclectic decorating style.

However, eclectic decorating is not a jumble of

whatever catches your eye. It only works when the

basic principles of design are understood and work

together to create a unified design. These five prin-

ciples are: line, color, texture, mass and form. Think

of your eclectic room as a work of art composed of

these five basic elements and your unique decorat-

ing style will be spectacular.

An eclectic style is full of the unexpected,

with hints of at least two of the other main

styles included. This living room combines

a vibrant color print above the mantel with

a more traditional Persian style area rug and a

country-inspired wood stove.

Decorating with white? Yes!Why not!Have you ever walked into someone's home and instantly felt welcomed, wrapped in a subtle friendly warmth?Chances are your friends’ house is decorated in the colours that suit their personalities and style.

This is the resonance of colour. Colour is a vital

conveyer of ambience and the key to creating a

mood in your home. The influence of colour is

nowhere more important than in your home. Your

home is your shelter, refuge, comfort. Your home

provides nourishment for your psyche. It's where

you commune with your family and friends. The

right colours and colour combinations can stimu-

late and relax your senses, create happy memories.

To begin to find your true decorating colours, start

with photos in magazines and books. Begin to pay

attention to colours that attract

you and which you don't care

for. You'll begin to discover

that your feelings about colour

are a deeply personal reflec-

tion of your personality..

white colour says about you

and how to use colour in

your home?

White is pure, unsullied,

divine. It represents heavenly

purity, joy and truth. The

Egyptians referred to white as

"a lady of strength". White can

be innocent, like a christening

dress or a bride. It can be frag-

ile, delicate and refined. At the opposite end of the

scale, white can be sterile, empty and cold.

Decorating with white: Often white is the colour

of choice for every room in the house. Most often,

this is because white is seen as the perfect neutral

and safe. It is good to keep in mind, though, that

pure white will jump out at you like any other bright

colour, and add to this the potential for glare from

a window and white can give you a headache. Bet-

ter choices for white range from slightly off-white

to creamy. Creamy white is serene and pure. In the

home, white is perfect for trim in almost every room

because it lends a crisp finishing touch. It also

works well on the ceiling because it enhances re-

flected light. Kitchens are a favourite place to use

white because the purity of the colour adds serenity

and a look of cleanliness to a place where counters

can be jumbled with food and colourful dishes and

towels. Bathrooms look absolutely great in white:

just add a towel colour of your choice and voila!

Whether it’s deep red, dark blue, or simply black

towels, you can change colours frequently to make

an instant fresh transformation to your décor. Just

add similar colour accessories (a vase, or a soap

dish) to finish the look.

If you love white: You are a bit of a perfectionist

and self-reliant. You are neat in your clothing and

keep a tidy home.

If you dislike white: You are more interested in

things that are a bit off-centre or quirky than things

that are perfectly orderly. You are easy to be with

and not obsessed with order.
