Long Island Business Hall of Fame Gala Honors Forest Laboratories, Inc.

For the ninth consecutive year, the

Farmingdale College Foundation will

honor the region’s business community

at its Long Island Business Hall of Fame

Gala held on Thursday, November 21

at Oheka Castle. Forest Laboratories is

this year’s honoree.

“Forest Labs has been a major

supporter of the College and the

Foundation for the past decade,”

said Robert Godfrey, president of

the Farmingdale College Foundation.

“During this time Forest Laboratories

has hired Farmingdale’s students as

interns and graduates, provided funding

to support the Bioscience and Facilities

Management programs, awarded

student scholarships within both the

School of Engineering Technology and

the School of Arts and Sciences, and

have been a major supporter of College

Foundation fundraisers over the past 10

years. We are extremely proud to honor

Forest Laboratories at this year’s gala.”

All funds raised at the Long

Island Business Hall of Fame Gala

support scholarships.

“Last year over 260 attended

the gala and we raised more than

$170,000 to support scholarships

and instructional/faculty needs,”

noted Dr. W. Hubert Keen, president

of Farmingdale State College. “While

a significant figure, it is one that

we certainly plan to surpass at this

year’s gala.”

Farmingdale’s newly re-created

Intercollegiate Flying Team staged a stunning

out-of-the-blue victory, this October, taking

first place in the Regional competitions of NIFA

(National Intercollegiate Flying Association) with

the first team Farmingdale has entered in this

event for 40 years. With the help of Student

Government funding, the club was able to

compete against six of the top Aviation schools

in the Northeast Region, including West Point.

After four 13-hour days of grueling competition,

Farmingdale’s fliers ended up placing in the

top ten in every event and taking first place

overall. They took home 27 awards, including 15

trophies and 12 medals. The team also took first

place in the overall ground events, and second

in the flight events to West Point. Student

Michael Cinnante was Farmingdale’s top scorer,

finishing second in the Top Pilot Award with

West Point taking top honors. Now, under the

leadership of Aircraft Maintenance Director

Larry Lopez and Coach Dave Gardinier, they

look forward to competing in the NIFA Nationals

this spring at Ohio State University.

Pro. Communication Students Win ScholarshipsSophomore Lisa Millstein has won a

Muhammad Ali Global Citizens Scholarship

of $10,000. She was recognized for her

commitment to the “Six Core Principles” of

humanitarianism espoused by the former

boxer. Millstein is the first FSC student to

ever win this award.

Millstein was also featured in an article in

Newsday, for her creation of a combination

resume-and-web-graphics presentation

which she calls a “Prezumé.”

Her idea uses a web-based application,

called Prezi, to display her resume

information in a way that allows viewers

to zoom in, out, or around the material

presented. “It has more features and options

than a standard Power Point, so people

connect better with the material. It lets

the material sparkle.” Millstein says she

learned about the innovative software during

coursework for her Computer Concepts class

with Professor Denise Bonomi.

Senior Sarina Turbendian has received

one of four undergraduate scholarships

given out by UUP. Turbendian is the first FSC

student to receive this scholarship in more

than ten years. The scholarship recognizes

undergraduate students for both academic

excellence and social or community service

Turbendian has been an active member of

Golden Key International Honour Society,

winning a chapter scholarship and serving

as Co-President of the club for her senior

year. She has also been an active member in

the Armenian Youth Federation (AYF-YOARF)

since the age of 14.

“My goals in life are to build on my

experience in the AYF-YOARF and become a

successful leader of humanitarian projects,”

said Turbendian. She hopes to continue her

studies with a master’s degree in literature,

and then pursue a career in literature and

publishing. “I believe that art elicits change,”

she said, “and I want to scout for books and

find stories that bring people together in the

hope of bettering the world.”

Edmund Mayer Edmund M. Mayer, resident of Melville,

NY and professor emeritus of physics at

Farmingdale State College, SUNY, died on

October 24.

A Holocaust survivor, Mayer graduated

from the City College of New York in 1957

earning a BME (Bachelor of Mechanical

Engineering), as well as an MME (Masters

of Mechanical Engineering) in 1960. He

received a professional degree (ME)

from Columbia University’s School of

Engineering, and completed his PhD

coursework at New York University in the

field of education.

Before beginning his academic career

at Farmingdale State, he had eight years

of industrial experience as an engineer

and was responsible for the design of the

ground support equipment for the LEM

hydraulic system, part of Apollo’s famous

Lunar Excursion Module, which successfully

landed on the moon 1969-1972.

An outstanding and dedicated physics

educator and warm human being with

a heart-warming smile, he retired from

Farmingdale in 1999 after 34 years of

dedicated service.
