Week 5 WEE WAA PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER WEE WAA PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER WEE WAA PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Tuesday Tuesday Tuesday - 6th November, 2012 6th November, 2012 6th November, 2012 Wee Waa Public School - Phone 6795-4284 Fax 6795-3098 Email - [email protected] A Special Invitation to all parents and community members to a free sausage sizzle at 1.15 p.m. On Friday, 9th November under the Primary COLA. Everyone is welcome to attend to welcome our new parents and Kindergarten students for 2013, and to attend a special assembly at 2.15 p.m. in the school hall. Contact Phone Numbers Please ensure that the front office has up to date contact numbers at all times. It is a parent’s responsibility to ensure that you are able to be contacted when and if necessary at all times. School Absenteeism I urge all parents to ensure that their children are to school on time every day. Precious minutes are being lost by some students who arrive late, who then have to come to the office to sign in. This can sometimes mean that your children don’t get to class for at least 10 minutes. It is also preferable that the front office is notified as quickly as possible of students who are sick as this helps in the class management. School Banking At last week’s assembly the manager of the Commonwealth Bank Narrabri spoke to the students about the benefits of School Banking. Teaching children the allimportant skills of money management and saving when they’re young can empower them for success in the future. The School Banking initiative teaches vital money management skills that will last well beyond school life. School Banking Day will be held each Wednesday at the school office. Students who do not have an existing Youthsaver Account and wish to save some money on a regular basis may collect a new account form from the office. Just remember by saving $1.00 per week over the four school terms will amount to $40.00 plus interest in one school year. Any amount of money may be saved from 5 cents upwards. Increase in School Enrolments Did you know our school started out at the beginning of 2012 with 144 students? We now have 169 with another 2 students enrolling in Week 7. I would like to welcome all our new students and families. I hope you will enjoy your education at our great school. Thank you to all classroom teachers for their professionalism in accompanying our new students’ needs and making many adjustments to their classroom routines and teaching and learning programs. We hope our enrolment numbers will be the same in February, 2013 so that we can maintain 7 classes. Because our numbers at the beginning of this year were below the magic number of 161, we were only entitled to 6 classes. We used funding from National Partnerships to maintain 7 classes to ensure students were given every opportunity to reach their potential. Telling the Time Learning to tell the time is one of those life skills that, well, takes time. There are some great resources on the School A to Z website that can help. This page includes a downloadable clock template and both analogue and digital time references. www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/detresources/tell_the_time_uHKOzycPnd.pdf

friendships with other children  If your child doesn’t learn the basic skills in the early years of school, they may develop learning problems

in later years.  This information is available on the Department of Education’s A‐Z website.

Great Ways to Build Your Child’s Reading Skills. At a glance  :  Try reading with different voices, lots of emotion and invented sound effects  Ask your child which parts of the books they found exciting, funny or different  When kids use the internet they need skills and knowledge that are different from those found in books  When doing homework, tell your child not to copy information word for word from books or the internet  Encourage your child to join the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge  Simple tips to encourage your child to become a strong reader and a book lover for the rest of their lives: 1.  Share a book at home. 2.  Children love to hear a story read aloud.   Try reading with different voices, lots of emotion, invented sound

effects and funny faces.   Change the tone in your voice and vary its loudness or softness.   Have fun and enjoy it.

3.  It’s a good idea to practise reading before sharing a book.   Listen to your child talk about the story and the pictures.   Try asking your child which parts of the books they found exciting, funny or different.

4.  Give your child the change to choose a book to read.   Try reading to your child and, at other times, ask your child to join in reading the book.

5.  Let your child hear how “hill” and “home” start with the sound or how “trouble” and “bubble” rhyme.

Hearing and Vision Checks for Transition Students We are fortunate that Community health is able to do the vision and hearing checks before students commence Kindergarten.   Any possible issues can then be dealt with before students begin their school career.   Good vision and hearing are vital for students to get the best out of the educational programs.  We thank Community health personnel for doing these checks on Tuesday, 6th November and Wednesday, 7th November.

You Can Do It We are beginning the next series of YCDI lessons on CONFIDENCE this week.   This is our YELLOW key and aims to teach children the importance of having a go and risk taking.   CONFIDENCE means knowing that you will often be quite successful at many things you do.   It means not being afraid to make mistakes or try something new.   Why?   Because it is the “trial and error” ‐ take a chance and maybe not get it right the first time, or at all ‐ that is impor‐tant to be learnt here.   If we aren’t prepared to “have a go”, just in case we make a mistake ‐ then in all likeli‐hood, we’ll never learn much of anything.  The positive habits of the mind that help develop confidence are : 1.  Accepting myself ‐ so not thinking badly about myself when you make a mistake; 2.  Taking risks ‐ thinking it’s good to try something new even though you might not be able to do it and

preferring (but not needing) to be successful all the time; 3.  Being independent ‐ speaking up even if classmates think you might not be able to do it and preferring

(but not needing) other’s approval; 4.  I can do it ‐ thinking that you are more likely to be successful than you are to fail.     CONFIDENCE.   In ourselves and in others.   It is an important key to give to our children ‐ so let’s start the talking now ... As always, the staff at Wee Waa Public School appreciate the support given by parents and families ‐ “talking the talk” is extremely important so that children know the language of each key and if this can be reinforced at home as well, then this is even better.

P&C will again be having our Christmas Hamper raffle for the Presentation Night.   We would love it if every family could donate something for our hamper.   Please drop your donations in the    basket at the office.   Wanted ‐ Uniforms The Clothing Pool at the canteen desperately needs your old uniforms to restock our shelves for next year.   If you are cleaning out cupboards, please think about dropping your children’s clothes they have grown out of into the canteen.

We would like to thank everyone who has helped with sports carnivals and car rally.   Your help     is greatly appreciated.

We will need help again for the Mardi Gras night.   We will be having slushies, popcorn, showbags and hair       spraying.  Our next meeting is on 14th November at Seplin Estate Winery at 5.30 p.m.   We will be discussing the availability of uniforms, a proposed small change to the shirts and would like anyone interested to attend.  Please feel free to join us.   The more the merrier.  Hope to see you all there.  Amanda Platt.
