Students at St. Bernard joinedwith families, faculty and staffto honor the twenty-nine seniorsof the Class of 2019 in a specialSenior Dedication Mass onWednesday, October 3, 2018.

Abbot Cletus Meagher pro-vided the homily for the serviceand encouraged students to notonly rely on the wonderful edu-cation they are receiving at St.Bernard, but also cherish the giftof faith they have received.

“Knowledge without virtue isan empty promise,” he said.“Always seek the good, whichcombines knowledge and virtue.Never fear to ask yourself thequestion, ‘To what am I dedicat-ing myself and what am I look-ing for?’”

He reminded the students,“Life is not simply about knowl-edge and education – it’s aboutthe wisdom of the Cross and theconnection between what islearned and the knowledge ofseeing the truth in God.”

“Being at St. Bernard meansthat you accept responsibility forand dedicate yourselves to theprinciples of the Christian faithupon which we are founded, “Abbot Cletus continued.

As a sign of that dedication, each senior received aBenedictine Cross, and AbbotCletus explained its symbolism.“The image of the crucifiedChrist is presented to remind oneof the price of true wisdom and

love. If one is truly wise, he orshe will learn that life is lived tothe fullest in dying to oneselfand coming alive to the needs ofothers.”

Abbot Cletus continued hisexplanation, “On the medal are anumber of abbreviations as wellas an image of St. Benedict. Onone side are the letters C S P B,which stand for “Crux SanctiPatris Benedicti” (The Cross ofour Holy Father Benedict).Vertically on the cross are theletters C.S.S.M.L., which standfor “Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux”(May the holy cross be mylight!); and horizontally are theletters N.D.S.M.D. for“Numquam draco sit mihi dux”(May the dragon never be myguide!).” Abbot Cletus finishedby saying, “Take these words toheart as you wear this medalover your heart.”

Following the homily, the fac-ulty and staff joined the seniorsand stood with them as a sign oftheir support. The presence ofthe faculty and staff indicatedtheir concurrence with the deci-sion of Fr. Joel Martin,President, and Fr. LinusKlucsarits, Headmaster, that theseniors should be recognized. The Senior Class then received ablessing in recognition of theroles of leadership they haveundertaken for the student bodyof St. Bernard PreparatorySchool.

The Journey Continues...Scene from Parents Weekend

By Mr. Michael Kastner, Director ofFine Arts

A very good friend of mine toldme once about 35 years ago and Iagree with it with all my heart… “It’sall about the journey!”

The students, parents, faculty andstaff and I here at St. Bernard PrepSchool have started a journey togetherup the mountain to Graduation Day onMay 26th. Along the way there willbe challenges that we need to face, dif-ficulties that will be thrown at us andwonderful accomplishments that wewill celebrate together, all under thewatchful eye of the Lord.

This first semester together hasbeen one that I have grown as ateacher and as a person. The studentsand I have been learning a great dealabout each other. They have taughtme a great deal about St. Bernard PrepSchool and I hope that I have taughtthem a little bit about music and being

a good person to each other. As I reflect on our first semester

together I can say that that we havecome a long way together. Our firstConcert at the St. Bernard Blues &BBQ was jumping into the deep endwithout your “life vest” on for the firsttime. But, the students, as trueSAINTS do, survived and did ratherwell. That was the first big hurdle ofour journey together.

The end of October was soonupon us with the PARENTS’Weekend Concert in the Gym. Thiswas going to be a huge test for us.How would everyone react to theshow? The new songs? The newDirector? A lot of questions to beanswered. Once again, the studentscame through for me. So many of theparents also welcomed me into theSBP family. Whew… I felt so muchbetter about our journey together. Ialso learned what a fantastic band pro-

gram we have!Back to work… Christmas

Program at The Byre would be ournext celebration together. I learnedthat the High School and MiddleSchool like to sing together so thatgave me many more options onputting a show together that wouldstart everyone’s holiday season thatright way.

A story of a long time and well-loved SBP Faculty member was theinspiration for the story. Narrated byour own Mr. Moriarty, the story tiedtogether all of the songs in the show.A more than full house of audiencemembers left with a song in theirhearts and the taste of homemadeChristmas Cookies in their tummies! The evening turned out really well.Another part of our journey complet-ed. Half way up the mountain. Theview is getting better.

Second semester will bring even

more challenges for the students and I!Only trust in the process and God’sguidance will we succeed!

January brings auditions for theSpring Musical the end of March. TheWizard of Oz is making a return visitto The Byre on the 80th anniversary ofthe 1939 movie starring Judy Garland! With memorable songs like, Followthe Yellow Brick Road, Ding Dong theWitch is Dead, If I Only Had a Brain, and everyone’s favorite… SomewhereOver the Rainbow. Going to be a hugeundertaking, but any journey worthtaking needs a few challenges alongthe way!

Soon after the musical is over, brings our Spring Band and ChoirTrip for the students. A chance to per-form and to grow even closer to theirclassmates and see a little bit of theworld outside the classroom. Anamazing part of our journey as we getcloser and closer to reaching our goal

and full-filling our destiny. After Easter, the students will get

a chance to perform in the TalentShow, showing off their God giventalents for their family and friends.Always wonderful to support oneanother and encouraging one anotherto do their best.

The last part of our journeytogether will be our Spring Concert inMay. The last time our seniors will getto perform here at SBP… before theyspread their wings and fly off into theworld as graduates of St. BernardPrep School. The view from the topof the mountain will be glorious. Wecan only get there if we work togeth-er… sing together… help each oth-er… and most importantly… praytogether. For only with God are allthings possible.

Thank you for being a part of ourjourney!

Villa Madonna Academy,Villa Hills, and St. BernardPreparatory School,Cullman, Alabama, becamethe first two Benedictineschools in the nation to takepart in the BenedictineExchange Program. PamelaMcQueen, principal, VillaMadonna Academy, andEileen O’Connell, VMA the-ology teacher, developed thisunique program, which pre-sents an opportunity for stu-dents and faculty from oneBenedictine high school tovisit another, meet peoplewho share their values andlearn through local experi-ences.

Villa Madonna hosted 10

students and two teachersfrom St. Bernard Prep Nov.14–18. In the spring twoVilla teachers and studentmembers of the VMABenedictine AmbassadorsClub will head down toCullman, Alabama, where theCatholic population is only 3percent. There are 24Benedictine high schoolsacross the United States andMrs. McQueen said that shehopes this is just the begin-ning.

“Our hope is that thisbecomes a widespread nation-al movement among theBenedictine schools and thatour students get to know eachother,” said Mrs. McQueen.

“We hope that the studentseventually take all of this tothe next step, which might bedoing service projects togeth-er in different parts of thecountry, and supporting acause in the spirit of St.Benedict.”

Mrs. McQueen said thatshe really enjoyed seeing theVilla students connect withother Benedictine students. They get to see that they arepart of something bigger thanjust one school so they canshare that Benedictine con-nection with students from adifferent part of the country.

“Think about how power-ful it could be if we couldconnect teenagers from across

the nation who have a sharedphilosophy and a shared senseof spirituality,” she said. “Itcould make the world a betterplace. That is what we arehoping for.”

From the moment theyarrived in Northern Kentuckythe students from St. BernardPrep were greeted with hospi-tality and welcomed to theGuest House at St. WalburgMonastery. They met theirstudent hosts, BenedictineAmbassadors, who invitedthem to a meal, followed byevening prayer. Day two thestudents enjoyed a trip to theNational UndergroundRailroad Freedom Center inCincinnati. They enjoyed

community activities, includ-ing a trip to the CincinnatiZoo and Carew Tower, ridingthe streetcar around down-town Cincinnati and visitingFindlay Market. Friday nightthey had some fun at LazerKraze and came back to VMAfor dinner and a bonfire. Eachday began and ended withprayer.

AAbbbbeeyy nneewwssThe Benedictine Oblates of St.

Bernard Abbey are women andmen who strive to live accordingto the spirit of Rule of St.

Benedict. The word ‘oblate’means to offer oneself. By living

daily in the Benedictine spirit,Oblates strive to deepen theirrelationship with Christ.Through the Oblate Program,Oblates experience a mutual rela-tionship in the prayers and goodworks of the Benedictine com-munity, thereby creating agreater bond with St. BernardAbbey. The community isenriched by the interaction withOblates, as well as with the cul-ture, insights, and expertise thatOblates bring.

The work of the BenedictineOblates consists in carrying outtheir daily obligation in theirstate of life according toBenedictine values, to the best oftheir ability. Along with theirimmediate obligations, such asfamily, career, etc., the Oblatesare encouraged to devote them-selves to other good works. Some Oblates volunteer in theirown parish furthering the mis-sion of the Church to help theweak and vulnerable of theworld. Through their daily living

of the Benedictine motto of Oraet Labora, the Oblates help tospread the Benedictine way oflife to places that St. BernardAbbey cannot reach.

Oblates are of great value to amonastic community. By dailyliving in the Benedictine spirit, the Oblates bring a spiritualstrength and serve as a linkbetween the community andparishes. Oblates and the com-munity mutually affirm theircommitment to the Benedictineway of life. The witness of theoblates living Benedictinecharisms in the secular worldstrengthens community mem-bers’ love and appreciation of theBenedictine way of life of prayerand service.
