Readings for Sunday,
June 28, 2020 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary
Time:
2 Kgs 4:8–11, 14–16a Ps 89:2–3, 16–17, 18–19 Rom 6:3–4, 8–11
Mt 10:37–42
In the first reading, the Shunemite woman recognizes Elisha as a prophet. She is a woman of influence, who was able to
convince him to dine with her (see Lydia in Acts 16:15). She was also a woman of means, who could afford to add a room to her home so that the prophet might stay there on a regular basis. Compelled to reward her generosity, the prophet promises: By this time next year you will have a son. There is no magic here, no divination. The only way that Elisha could have made a promise that would eventually be fulfilled would have been through the power of God. Today’s responsorial psalm comes from a royal hymn that praises God's commitment to David (see 2 Sam 7:16). Lovingkindness and faithfulness are technical terms for God’s covenant fidelity. Unlike the covenant made with the people through the mediation of Moses (see Exodus 19-21), an agreement which required their compliance to God's law, this covenant imposes no added responsibilities on David or his descendants. These covenant promises are pure gift. The psalmist then turns to the people (vv. 16-17) who will enjoy the blessings that flow from God’s lovingkindness and faithfulness. They are brought to praise God for such goodness. Today Paul explains how Baptism enables believers to participate in the death and resurrection of Jesus. The ritual is itself the re-enactment of his death and resurrection. As they were plunged into the water, they were buried with Christ in death; as they emerged from the water, they rose with him into new life. Paul's real purpose in drawing these lines of comparison between the death and resurrection of Jesus and baptism and new life of the Christians is ethical exhortation. He seeks to encourage them to set aside their old manner of
living and to take on a new life of holiness. This may entail hardships, but the cross is the only way to new life. The gospel reading is an instruction on the demands (vv. 37-39) and rewards (vv.40-42) of discipleship. Jesus insists that if the believers are not willing to measure up to these demands, they are not worthy to become his disciples. This “cost of discipleship” challenges the ties of kinship which are marked by natural affection. Such bonds must take second place to commitment to him. “Carrying the cross” is probably an allusion to Jesus’ own crucifixion. Playing with the idea of finding and losing, Jesus states that to find one’s life means to live self-centeredly, but to lose oneself in sacrifice will be rewarded with ultimate life. Jesus then promises an assurance of the hospitality of others. Finally, those who offer disciples such hospitality will themselves be rewarded.
Reflection:
Today we are faced with the cost of discipleship, but we are also comforted by the promise of the providence of God. Baptism is for us both death and life. Through it we enter into Christ’s death and we die to lives of selfishness and sin. Through it we rise with Christ to a new life freed from everything that previously held us down. As glorious as this new life might be, it requires death to our old ways of living, and this is always difficult. The cost of discipleship cuts right to the core of our beings, it lays bare the very structures of kinship. Baptism recreates us as children of God; through it we are given a new life and born into a new family. The bonds of discipleship are now even stronger than the bonds of blood. Discipleship requires our very lives. As disciples we can no longer put ourselves first. We must be willing to spend ourselves and to be spent, to serve others in the day to day unfolding of life. We may find such commitment very demanding, but that is part of the cost of discipleship. God promises that if we lose our lives in this way, we will really gain them. If we are unselfish in the way we share ourselves with others, we will be enriched through our generosity. If we spend ourselves and are spent in our service of others we will be filled with blessings unimaginable.
Thoughts to consider this Week:
WELCOME, PROPHET
Younger generations are quick to tell older ones how wrong they are about everything. But wise elders don’t dismiss challenges to their perspective lightly—especially when they have some truth to them. A prophetic word may at times come more naturally to the young: free of the accretions of habit and with no
comfortable niche to defend (yet). Take time today to talk across the age gap. Hear the words to another generation’s songs, consider their protests, withhold instant judgment. Having a conversation partner, as we’ve learned from the time of isolation, is worth the investment.

St. Joseph’s Preparatory School Congratulations to the following students who have been listed on the Honor Roll at St. Joseph’s Preparatory School for the academic year 2019-20: Owen M. Garwood and Jason T, Mattera Caring for Friends Caring for Friends still needs your help with making meals for the homebound. We had a wonderful response to our last request and find ourselves in need again. Since many people spend the summer elsewhere, we usually see a decrease in donated meals over the summer months and we have already seen our meal supply run low. There are many homebound people who are still in need in our area. Please consider picking up a pack of empty trays and making an extra meal occasionally to feed our homebound friends. The empty trays are kept on top of the Caring for Friends freezer in the St. Rose garage. The garage is open daily from 9-5. Please fill the trays with a complete meal (protein, starch and vegetable) and then freeze them. Return the frozen meals to the freezer at St. Rose at your convenience. If you have any questions, or you cannot pick up trays and would like us to deliver them to you, please call Anita Capps at 267-664-0241 or Chris McDade at 215-801-8869.
