Lesson 1: ¿Qué cosas te gustan? ¿Cuáles no te gustan?
1. Read through the parallel text from the new sentence builder. You need to aim to be able
to recognise and produce this level of language, without support, by the end of this unit of
work (8 lessons + extra vocabulary learning + revision). Use different colours to highlight:
a. words you already know from previous units of work
b. cognates and near-cognates
c. verbs (in bold), especially verbs that are in past tenses (underlined)
Desafío (challenge): can you work out which past tense verbs are in the preterite
tense and which are in the imperfect tense?
2. Play the ‘Y9 Spanish – Somos así: parallel text’ soundfile from ClassCharts and listen to the
pronunciation, then read the Spanish out loud, trying to perfect your pronunciation. Can you
read it out loud and keep up with the recording?
WE ARE THIS WAY/ WE ARE LIKE THIS SOMOS ASÍ
1 What things do you like? Which don't you like? ¿Qué cosas te gustan? ¿Cuáles no te gustan?
2 I love all (the) sports and because of that I
go to the sports centre almost every day.
Me molan todos los deportes y por eso voy al
polideportivo casi todos los días.
3 When I was younger I had fear of (the) insects
but now I am fascinated by all (the) animals. Cuando era más joven tenía miedo a los insectos,
pero ahora me fascinan todos los animales.
4 I don’t like (the) household chores at all, nor
getting up early. How boring!
No me gustan nada las tareas domésticas ni
levantarme temprano. ¡Qué aburrido!
5 Above all, I get angry about (the) racism given
that it is unjust.
Sobre todo, me enfada el racismo dado que es
injusto.
6 How do you (all) organise the week in your family? ¿Cómo organizáis la semana en familia?
7 After school, I walk (to) the dog while my
sisters either do (the) homework or read.
Después del colegio paseo al perro mientras que
mis hermanas o hacen los deberes o leen.
8 In addition, on Mondays they play the guitar in
a band. They write their own songs.
Además, los lunes tocan la guitarra en un grupo.
Escriben sus propias canciones.
9 We love (the) films, so on Saturdays we often
go to the cinema…
Nos chiflan las películas, así que los sábados
vamos a menudo al cine…
10 …(in order) to see a fantasy film, like Star
Wars.
…para ver una película de fantasía, como La
Guerra de las Galaxias.
11 What was your birthday like? What did you do? ¿Cómo fue tu cumpleaños? ¿Qué hiciste?
12 On the fifth of October I celebrated my
birthday with my best friends. It was amazing!
El cinco de octubre celebré mi cumpleaños con
mis mejores amigos. ¡Fue alucinante!
13 We went to a theme park, where I went on
lots of really high, fast rollercoasters.
Fuimos a un parque de atracciones, donde monté
en muchas montañas rusas muy altas y rápidas.
14 I drank a strawberry milkshake and then we
ate my birthday cake. I had a fantastic time!
Bebí un batido de fresa y luego comimos mi
pastel de cumpleaños. ¡Lo pasé fenomenal!
3. Familiarise yourself with the words from the sentence builder below, which you can use to
build answers from the first question on the parallel text. Start by playing the ‘Y9 Spanish
– Somos así SB1, part 2’ soundfile from ClassCharts and practising your pronunciation by
repeating the Spanish after the teacher.
4. After practising the correct pronunciation, choose at least three of the following tasks
which will help you familiarise yourself with the vocabulary from the sentence builder.
(Minimum: learn the phrases in the white boxes. Desafío: learn the phrases in grey as well.)
• Write down the Spanish and English for six sentences you have built using the
Sentence Builder above.
• Build six sentences, then time 20 seconds to look at each one before trying to re-
write the sentence from memory (as in the ‘frog copying’ activity we do in class).
• Play ‘Trapdoor’ or ‘Mind Reading’ to guess a sentence someone else has built (this
could be someone in your family (they don’t need to know Spanish, as they can use
the Sentence builder), or a friend in your class (over a phone call or video chat).
• Make flashcards or a Look-Cover-Write-Check sheet to learn key words.
• You can also learn the words on Quizlet (see weblink on the front of this booklet).
5. Test yourself! Using the first grid on the following page, time yourself three minutes per
grid – how many phrases can you fill in (Spanish to English)? Desafío: do at least one more
task from the list above before testing yourself on the second grid (Spanish to English).

Lesson 3: Grammar, reading and translation practice [After doing each activity in this lesson, check your work - answers at end of the booklet.]
1. Use the present tense verbs in the box to complete the missing words from the song.
2. Spend 10 minutes revising present tense verb endings and three important irregular verbs.
a) Practise the regular verb endings by repeating them out loud until you can do this without
looking (e.g. AR verb endings are “-o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an”).
b) Practise irregular verbs by repeating the full verb conjugation out loud until you can do this
without looking (e.g. “ir (to go) is voy, vas, va, vamos, vais, van”).
(Use flashcards or use a Look-Cover-Write-Check sheet to help you learn this information.)
3. The present tense opinions in Sentence Builder 1 work in a slightly different way to normal
present tense verbs.
• We use ‘me gusta’ to translate ‘I like’, but it really means ‘it is pleasing to me’. So
we use the ‘me’ to mean ‘to me’ and use the verb ‘gustar’ with the he/she/it ending
‘-a’ to mean ‘it is pleasing’.
• Similarly, ‘me encanta’ really means ‘it is enchanting to me’; ‘me fascina’ means ‘it is
fascinating to me’; and ‘me enfada’ means ‘it is enraging to me’.
So when you are giving an opinion about one thing,
using this type of opinion verb, you need to use the
‘it’ ending of the verb. However, when you are talking
about more than one thing/ something plural, you
need to use the ‘they’ ending of the verb.
So how would you say…
a) I like drawing.
b) I like housework.
c) I am fascinated by fashion.
d) I am fascinated by insects.
4. Read the three texts and complete the table below.
name likes other information
Diego
martial arts is a member of a judo club...
Josefina
Miguel
5. a) Read the noticeboard and answer the questions in English.
b) Find the Spanish for the following phrases in the notices.
6. Translate the text into Spanish. Try to do it using as little support as possible.
5.
at your SKO for help.
Lesson 4: ¿ Cómo fue tu cumpleaños?

1. Time yourself 5 minutes and translate the sentences – how many points can you get?

naturaleza así que voy

Desafío: create two similar sentences from memory.
2. Do some more work to learn Sentence Builders 1 (both parts) and 2. Start by testing
yourself and identifying what you need to work on. You must learn the key phrases in the
white boxes. Then learn as many of the impressive phrases in the grey boxes as you can.
• To work on the vocabulary from a particular sentence builder, you could practise on
Quizlet. See the front of the booklet for the Quizlet weblink.
• To work on pronunciation, listen to the soundfiles from ClassCharts again and repeat
after the teacher.
3. Test yourself! Create your own test; or use the grids in this booklet, or the tests on
Quizlet to check how well you have learned the vocabulary and pinpoint what you still need
to work on.
4. Make a revision resource (e.g. flashcards, mind-map, poster, game, Look-Cover-Write-
Check sheet) to help you practise any words you still need to learn.
Lesson 6: Grammar, reading and translation practice [After doing each activity in this lesson, check your work - answers at end of the booklet.]
1. Read the texts and answer the questions with the correct name.
2. Spend 15 minutes revising preterite tense verb endings and important irregular verbs.

looking (e.g. AR verb endings are “-é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -asteis, -aron”).

without looking (e.g. “ir (to go) and ser (to be) are fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron”).
