Home learning – Foundation Class – Summer Term 2020 Week beginning Monday 27 th April 2020 Hi everyone – it has been great to see photos of some of the amazing learning you have been doing at home. It all looks like a lot of fun! I know that some people have started growing some plants and some of the sunflowers are getting tall already. I have taken a photo of mine – as you can see, they are growing but are not very tall yet. I wonder if Mrs. Bargewell’s are taller than mine? Did you manage to see the story of Old Bear I read last week? Maybe you have some stories about Toys at home that you could read together. Or maybe you could use your own toys as characters for a story that you could write. Literacy learning In the learning pack this week are some pictures of the toy Mice family from school who have been having fun out in my garden! They pretended that they were on a day out, having a picnic, playing hide and seek, climbing and taking turns on a swing. I decided to add some simple sentences to tell the story of their adventure – maybe you could have an adventure with some of your toys and write about what they did. You can use the symbols below to support the writing process: always start with thinking of an idea and saying it aloud to help to remember it. How did you get on last week with learning the names of the letters – the alphabet? Did you find a song that helped you to remember the names in the right order? Do let me know if you find a good one and I can share it with everyone else. This is the link to the one on CBeebies with Squiglet - https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/watch/get-squiggling-letters- alphabet-song Keep practising ! Remember, all letters are a bit like animals – they have a name and a sound. Practise using the sounds to read and spell words. This week, Mrs. Bargewell has made a red word, word search if you’d like to have a go. There is a list of red words that are hidden in the grid. Use a pen to highlight the ones that you have found. Perhaps you could try it with your family and see who finds the most words? Here are the symbols we use in school to help us remember the process of writing. Help your child to use them to write in lots of different contexts.

Home learning – Foundation Class – Summer Term 2020Week beginning Monday 27 th April 2020

Hi everyone – it has been great to see photos of some of the amazing learning you have been doing at home.

This is the link to the one on CBeebies with Squiglet - https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/watch/get-squiggling-letters-alphabet-song Keep practising !

Mathematics: In number this week, we are continuing to consolidate counting skills to 20 and also to think about adding and subtraction. In school we have looked at both of these concepts using a wide range of objects to help us with our counting. We also use a number line/track with numbers from 0 to 10 or 20 in the correct order which helps us to recognise and write the numbers we need as well as to count on or back when we are adding and subtracting.

Adding – so far in school, we have counted how many in each group first and then counted all of them to check the total e.g. 4 add on 5 – 1 2 3 4 then 5 6 7 8 9. Next steps are to start from the first number and then count on. You can try this in different ways e.g. 4 add on 5 - start at 4 … then count on 5 more (you could use a number track to help too) 5, 6, 7, 8 ,9

Here are a couple of ideas to help:

Subtraction – we have taken small numbers away from numbers up to and including 10 counting how many we have left to find our answer e.g. 10 subtract (take away) 4, start with 10 objects, take away 4 of them and count how many are left – 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Here are some other ideas that you might like to try.

You could also use number cards 1, 2 and 3 – take it in turns to pick a number to take away. Remember to check how many are left each time. Maybe you could practise counting back … start at 10 (or maybe even 20!) and count down to 0.

Prime Areas of learning: week beginning Monday 20th April 2020 Communication and Language

How we use talk and speech are very important in all areas of development. This week try thinking about the language that could be used when telling a story. Try making up a story together about some of the toys you

like to play with. Remember some of the story language we have learnt in school –

Maybe you will start with Once upon a time One sunny day

What will happen in your story and I wonder how it will end… will it be a happy ending for all of the characters?

Maybe you could try learning a story and use some pictures and actions to help you remember it – like we have done in school when we make a story map.

This week, as well as using our big muscles when we exercise, we are

going to think about using the smaller muscles that we need to

develop for writing and using tools. You could practise using lots of

different tools this week when you are playing and learning. This will

help you to develop strong muscles especially in your arms, wrists and

hands. Maybe you could use a paintbrush to paint a picture,

scissors to cut out some pictures of your toys to make puppets, or

maybe a photo of you to make a ‘mini me’ ! Which tools will you

need to make a stick puppet? Or try Mrs. Bargewell’s cone puppet

challenge. If you do any cooking, think about

the tools you need to use. Perhaps you will do some gardening – what

different types of tools do you use to help you?

Remember to try to do some exercise every day – maybe go for a walk, run, bike or scooter ride with your family or maybe do something

active in your garden. Stay healthy and happy and sleep

well too!

bucket’? Everyone has an invisible bucket and good things go in it - when it gets filled up it helps us to feel good. I wonder if you can do something kind to help fill yours and your families’ buckets this week. Remember, simple things like giving them a smile will help. Maybe you could help to tidy your room, prepare the food for dinner, tell your brother or sister a story or playing a game together. Just having fun together will help to fill everyone’s buckets too.

Specific areas of learning:Understanding the world and Expressive Arts and Design

Make a cone puppet

This week, Mrs. Bargewell has set a challenge to make a pop up cone puppet and a second challenge to make something using cardboard tubes - the instructions are on the remote learning area on the Henbury website. Children in lots of different places enjoy playing with puppets – I wonder if you have any at home that you like to play with. Perhaps your parents enjoyed playing with puppets too? One of my favourite toys when I was young was a puppet that my Grandma brought me back from a trip to Germany. It was a rabbit and was made just like the ones in Mrs. Bargewell’s instructions.

Linked to our physical development, we are thinking about using different tools and techniques to help with our learning and playing. Take a look at the instructions and see which tools you will need to use and remember to be

cautious and think about being safe when you use them. When your puppet or tube challenge is finished, maybe draw a picture or take a photo of it so we can all see

them when we are in school again – or send me a photo by email [email protected] Have fun making!

Read Write Inc set 1 and set 2 sounds – we use these in school to help the children to recall any sounds they find it hard to remember.

One sunny day …

… They lived happily ever after

…then suddenly …!… The

Remember to ake a look at the Ruth Miskin website (Read Write Inc) if you would like support with phonics. They are doing daily phonics sessions each morning – details on the website - https://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/

Schedules will be posted – from 20th April and they will repeat all sounds once they have been completed – sessions take place from Monday to Friday and are available for 24 hours afterwards on YouTube

All children in class have covered set 1 and most children have also covered set 2. If you get the chance, you could practice both reading and writing the sounds we have learned, especially the digraphs (2 letters, 1 sound – remember to describe them using the letter names).
