Brian Hetherington Chair
Although marked by change, the 2014–2015 year was incredible. A healthy organization is bigger than any one person and Rebuilding Together Peninsula showed that transitions are as much a part of the natural order of things as the wins and the accolades. This resilience is impossible without a dedicated group of community members who agree that every person deserves a safe and healthy home. From our Board of Directors to the Junior League of Palo Alto•Mid Peninsula, our volunteers to our staff, and our donors to our community partners, this organization is in good hands, and our supporters deserve all the hugs and high fives in the world. It is because of them–because of you–that Rebuilding Together Peninsula continues to restore the feeling of home for so many vulnerable members of our community.
That precious feeling of home is different for everyone but is consistently as personal as it is essential. When each day is met with another regional news story about the affordable housing crisis and no silver bullet solution within reach, Rebuilding Together Peninsula provides hope for those who are in danger of becoming just another troubling news report. We know that access to a stable, safe, and healthy home environment is a critical indicator of a healthy community, and with over 5,000 low-income, owner-occupied homes in substandard condition in our service area alone, our role has become as important as ever. I am energized by the work before us and am proud to report that our staff, outreach
efforts, and capacity to serve more of our neighbors continues to grow and evolve to meet the challenges knocking at our community’s doorstep.
Next time you see someone wearing a Rebuilding Together Peninsula t-shirt or someone listed in the pages that follow, please join me in shaking their hand and patting them on the back to thank them for their part in preserving affordable housing in the community we call home.
Your continued partnership is inspiring, and is so appreciated. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Our Leadership

Dear Friends,
Protecting time for annual reflection has always been important to me. For the first time in nearly a decade, I had the opportunity to reflect on a passing year in a new organization and in a new role. While a number of themes arose during this process, the emotion that presented itself over and over again was that of gratitude.

4 | Rebuilding Together Peninsula
National Rebuilding Day National Rebuilding Day is held the last Saturday in April each year. In 2015, National Rebuilding Day rehabilitated the homes of 40 families and 15 community centers or nonprofit facilities. Projects were sponsored by a combination of 56 corporate, civic, and faith-based organizations. More than 1,545 volunteers spent the day creating safe and healthy living environments in 14 cities across the Peninsula.
Safe at Home Safe at Home is Rebuilding Together Peninsula’s year-round home repair program. When it launched in 2010, the focus was limited to minor home repair. Today, Safe at Home is a full-fledged home repair program taking on critical and technical repairs and modifications for homeowners in need.
In 2015, Safe at Home rehabilitated 95 homes throughout the Peninsula, serving 177 individuals with repairs being completed by our full-time Safe at Home Technician.
Team Build Our Team Build program offers community-minded corporations and service organizations opportunities for volunteer participation that are customized to meet the needs of the sponsoring group. Our Team Build season takes place June through October. In 2015, Team Build completed 30 projects at 6 homes and 11 community centers in 8 different cities across the Peninsula with the help of approximately 200 volunteers from 10 sponsor groups.
Program OverviewRebuilding Together Peninsula believes community starts at home. We offer critical repairs, accessibility modifications and energy efficient upgrades to low-income homeowners and community centers at no cost to service recipients in San Mateo and northern Santa Clara counties. Our impact extends beyond the individuals served to revitalize and stabilize vulnerable neighborhoods and communities across the Peninsula.

Homeowner StoryThe Mahoni family moved into their 68-year-old home in East Menlo Park in 2006. This sweet, multigenerational Pacific Islander family struggles with medical issues and disability, living paycheck to paycheck to make their mortgage.
Falesiu and Pauli care for their developmentally disabled adult son, Roger, who struggles with meningitis and uses a wheelchair since his left side weakened last year. When the family applied for National Rebuilding Day last year, their home needed a series of intensive health and safety repairs, including window replacement, electrical safety upgrades, gate replacement, and a new roof.
With the support of contracting partner Cody Brock Commercial Builders and sponsors Dorsey & Whitney LLP and Stanford Healthcare, the Mahoni family saw their home transform before their very eyes leading up to National Rebuilding Day. Thanks to the extraordinary support and leadership of Cody Brock Commercial Builders, flooring and windows were replaced throughout the home, in addition to a newly remodeled bathroom and replaced furnace. For the first time in years, the family could heat their home comfortably.
Volunteers from Stanford Healthcare and Dorsey & Whitney LLP came together on National Rebuilding Day to provide landscaping support and debris removal. The gate was replaced for security, and electrical safety upgrades made their home more efficient. Thanks to Legacy Roofing’s generosity, the family got a brand new roof to seal their home for generations to come.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you, not only for the work you have done for my house but for the good work you have done for other people,” said Falesiu.
Soon after Falesiu and Pauli’s home was completed in April, their daughter Amelia graduated Menlo-Atherton High School in June 2015, and invited
our staff over to be part of the celebration. It is a testament to the kindness of the Mahoni family that they opened their home to the community.
Rebuilding Together Peninsula is proud to have taken part in the community effort to restore the Mahoni family’s home.

The housing affordability crisis plaguing the Bay Area directly impacted Rebuilding Together Peninsula in 2015. For the first time in seven years, we were unable to secure two AmeriCorps members due to the high cost of living in the area.
Farwell House
2014–2015 Annual Report | 7
Since 2008, these two sets of hands have played a significant role at Rebuilding Together Peninsula, helping us with everything from volunteer recruitment to project site support. Understanding the importance AmeriCorps plays at Rebuilding Together Peninsula, our creative and innovative Board of Directors discussed the purchase of a home to ease the housing burden for future AmeriCorps members. Within months, Rebuilding Together Peninsula became the proud owners of a house in East Palo Alto.
Previously vacant and in a state of disrepair, the house will receive a complete overhaul this summer. With an aggressive timeline in place, the home will be ready in time for the start date of our incoming AmeriCorps members, who will increase our capacity to preserve affordable housing on the Peninsula.
This exciting development in the history of our organization could not have happened if not for the combination of a forward-thinking board of directors and incredible community partners.
To honor a significant contribution made by Nick and Gail Farwell, this home will be affectionately known as “Farwell House” moving forward. This gift will kick-start a capital campaign to support the acquisition costs and construction phase of the home. Thank you, Nick and Gail, for your many years of support and being a part of such an inspiring part of our organization’s history.
If you are interested in making a gift to the capital campaign, please contact Development Director Annel Aguayo at (650) 366–6597.

Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati (WSGR), a law firm headquartered in Palo Alto, provides legal services to technology, life sciences, and growth enterprises worldwide. WSGR has been giving back to the community since its inception in 1961. The firm’s contributions to the community include pro bono legal services, volunteer community service activities, and financial support to nonprofit organizations through the Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati Foundation. The Foundation has been a sponsor of Rebuilding Together Peninsula’s National Rebuilding Day (NRD) for nearly 25 years.
“RTP’s focus on helping low-income homeowners, seniors, the disabled, and nonprofits dovetails nicely with the causes we support,” said Gail McFall, long-time NRD Volunteer Captain and Community Affairs Manager at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.
“RTP’s process for each of their projects in terms of selecting the site and the construction captain, as well as the staff’s availability to answer questions and be there, has been invaluable and has truly made it a great experience,” she continued.
Gail—who tag teams with her husband, Jim, and former Construction Captain Ken Rhoads—has been a volunteer captain for WSGR’s National Rebuilding Day projects for nearly 10 years, annually bringing out more than 30 volunteers from the firm for NRD. According to Gail, WSGR volunteers most enjoy transforming outdoor spaces at community facilities, incorporating artistic elements like murals, mosaics, and chalk boards to create welcoming play areas for kids in need.
In 2014, when WSGR renovated the outdoor space for Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse (CORA), one child living at the facility would come out to say “hi” and watch as they transformed a weed-filled, concrete outdoor space into a patio-picnic area, a Zen-like patio area with fountain, and a beautiful children’s play area. “Seeing him enjoy the play structure after the project brought tears to our eyes,” said Gail.
The Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati Foundation has donated nearly $140,000 to support Rebuilding Together Peninsula’s work since our partnership began in 1993. The entire RTP team has the utmost gratitude for all that Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati has done for Rebuilding Together Peninsula and our entire community over the years, and we are pleased to honor them this year.
The Wollenberg Award
8 | Rebuilding Together Peninsula
The Wollenberg Award is presented annually to those who provided extraordinary resources and leadership to Rebuilding Together Peninsula. The 2014–2015 award is proudly presented to Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and Donna Dunwoody.
![Page 11: Home is Everything · 2016. 8. 11. · eyes leading up to National Rebuilding Day. Donna Dunwoody has been integral to Rebuilding Together Peninsula from the start. In 1989, back when RTP was Christmas in April, David Wollenberg introduced her to our work in the community. Early on, she sponsored projects, and in the early 90s decided to take on managing a project with her husband.
“There is something very basic about home that I think everyone should be able to enjoy. A safe, warm place that we all should be able to go to that protects and shelters us from the outside world. It is very meaningful to me to be a part of creating this for people,” said Donna.
Donna grew up from humble beginnings, living “hand to mouth” in a small town in New England where neighbors helped neighbors. “My parents were never too busy to help a person in need. It is the way I was raised and I hope I have passed on to my children the importance of community.”
Among the nearly 40 projects she has been a part of, Donna connected most with one family in particular in East Palo Alto. The homeowner was in her 80s and had raised 13 children in her dilapidated home. “I loved interacting with her and her family members,” exclaimed Donna. “We all had a wonderful time working together. We laughed, cried, and shared many tender moments together. It was a wonderful experience.”
Sometimes referred to among the RTP staff as “Queen,” Donna has been an invaluable Rebuilding Together Peninsula leader and supporter since our founding. We are pleased to honor her this year with the Wollenberg Award for her dedication to serving our community.
