2. Eave and rakeGood Fair Poor N/A None

Materials: WoodObservations:• Fasten panels with a minimum of 8d Common (0.131-inch by 2-1/2-inch)nails spaced a maximum of 6 inches on center at supported panel ends andedges. At intermediate supports, fasten panels 12 inches on center. In high-wind areas, more fasteners may be required.• Soffits are actually part of the cornice or eave, the point where the roofprojection and the side walls of the building meet. This gable roof has acornice along the side walls, formed at the rafter ends. Most gable roofs alsohave a rake cornice or rake extension formed on the gable ends. This iscreated by extending the rafters out past the building ends. Not only does thecornice add to the appearance of the home, it also helps protect the buildingfrom sun, rain and snow. In most instances the cornice or eave of today’shomes are finished off with a soffit—the covering on the underside of theoverhang. Older homes often have an open eave, with the rafters adding tothe décor. --These homes can be left as is or soffitts can be added later. Thisparticular home has open eaves with exposed rafter tails.• 1/2" or more gap noted between sheathing, manufacturer recommendationis 1/8". Larger gaps can mirror through to shingles.
