The fundamentals of what your local Council does is often summed up in the phrase ‘roads, rates and rubbish’. But being labelled a growing regional city means there is a bit more to it. One of our challenges is to be able to attract and retain ‘professionals’ to live here in the Wimmera. For a doctor, dentist, scientist, police officer, CEO, school teacher, etc to move to the country and to start a new life, their new home needs to offer a modern lifestyle. That means it needs to be ‘liveable’ for themselves and their family. Three of the Council committees I serve on are examples of this. Wimmera River Improvement Committee has a focus on the riverside environs and improving our central, natural attraction in Horsham. Horsham Police and Community Consultative Committee is an important group committed to our safety and well-being, with practical ‘solutions’. The Wimmera Indoor Stadium Project Control Group is working to improve our facilities for indoor sport. It’s also encouraging more of our residents to play sport, more often. Horsham is a great place to ‘live’……. Council has a role in keeping it that way.

EOI open for cafe by the Wimmera River

Horsham Rural City Council is seeking interest from mobile cafe operators to establish a “cafe by the river” near the Soundshell at Sawyer Park.

Angela Murphy, Director Planning and Economic, said attracting patronage and stimulating activity around the river corridor was a priority for Council.

“Horsham’s Council Plan and ongoing community feedback has identified the Wimmera River as being one of the key attributes of the city,” Ms Murphy said.

“Council sees a cafe by the river as one way of increasing activity in the area.

“It’s also important to ensure commercial activities are compatible with the river’s environmental and recreation purposes.

“A trial period of 12 months has been set so we can gauge patronage. We’ll also assess site-related issues with a view to informing Council about the nature of the business model, infrastructure and regulatory requirements,” Ms Murphy said.

Interested parties can also submit an alternative proposal.

“Having a hospitality service along the river means we can use the Wimmera River corridor to contribute to Horsham’s economy,” Ms Murphy said.

“Other benefits would be the ability to incorporate and showcase local produce as well as promoting our river as a key community recreational asset.”

‘Livability’ more than a buzzwordOne of the most fashionable terms around Local Government right now is ‘liveability’.
