Since the mid-1960s, Head Start has been providing young children of low-income families with educational and social tools they need to prepare for successful futures. The Head Start program in Billings serves 360 children and their families in Yellowstone and Carbon Counties.

“We not only support the children but we support the whole family,” says Tera Clough, community relations director. “What we want to do is to end the cycle of poverty, so we work with the children and their parents at the same time.”

Head Start provides resources for parents who want to strengthen their skills, including everything from resume writing, to budgeting, to preparing for the GED or college.

Volunteers are an essential component of Head Start.

Head Start Helping Kids And Families SucceedThe Billings program has a team of about 50 classroom volunteers, who range in age from 14 to 80. This year, the Yellowstone Art Museum, the largest of its kind in the region, celebrates its 50th year enriching the Billings community with art exhibitions, art education programs and special art-related events. “The exhibitions are very eclectic. We emphasize contemporary art, but not exclusively,” explains Executive Director Robyn G. Peterson. “We draw exhibitions from our permanent collections, from other museums, and various collectors from around the world. The museum will occasionally bring in international art as well,” she explains.

There is something for everyone, young and old, offered in the museum’s many ongoing programs and classes. “We have art education programs in the schools for pre-k through 12 and we also offer an ongoing series of hands-on workshops for adults. Everything from jewelry to fabric arts to painting,” says Robyn. “The last one was zombie make-up!”

The museum also showcases art made by young, budding local artists who take part in the programs. “We have long-standing partnerships with certain schools and children’s groups,” she says. “The results of those school programs are put together into exhibitions that are in a gallery called the Young Artists’ Gallery, which is dedicated to children’s art.”

Community members can involve themselves and help support the art preservation, enrichment and education of Billings and the greater Yellowstone region, by attending the programs and exhibitions.

“There are many ways people can get involved,” says Robyn. “We have many membership options available and a wide range of volunteer opportunities.”
