Arts Award: We will support you

Arts Award is a unique national qualification that helps young people to develop as artists and arts leaders. The programme develops their creativity, leadership and com-munication skills. It is open to anyone up to the age of 25 and embraces all interests and backgrounds. The Civic is an Arts Award Supporter so all our programmed events are suita-ble for Discovery, Explorer and Bronze. We also have trained advisors on site to help you achieve your Arts Award qualification.

Cardboard Citizens presents

Settled …. Until suddenly you’re not…

Candid, poignant and intimate, this new four star hit play by award winning playwright Ali Taylor takes a look at some of the personal and political issues surrounding homelessness and the housing crisis in the UK today in an approachable, entertaining and interactive way. Presented by acclaimed theatre company Cardboard Citizens, the show is a modern reimagining of Ken Loach’s ground-breaking film Cathy Come Home and is followed by a Forum section in which audiences have the opportunity to discuss, disagree and even change the outcome of the story.

French Theatre company Compagnie Animotion is coming to our venue with their

show The Musicians of Bremen.

Making work since 2005, Compagnie Animotion is one of the leading companies making work for Deaf audiences ; their work

uses no or very little spoken language, transcending boundaries between hearing and non-hearing communities as well as in-

ternational audiences. With their children’s shows, they aim to provide greater accessibility to theatre in education for all chil-

dren, regardless of ability or cultural background.

The Musicians of Bremen aims to create participatory visual theatre experiences for children in schools and in the wider com-

munity and is a 100% musical adventure based on the Grimm’s tale, “The Town Musicians of Bremen". Using puppetry, tra-

peze, tumbling, a cello, a guitar, some drums and a clarinette, the show was commissioned by The Civic, Barnsley and ARC,

Stockton and is supported by Arts Council England and Spedidam (France). Specifically made in situ for 3-7 years, the show also

touches on KS1 and KS2 targets in music, expression, geography & PHSE.

MUSICIANS OF BREMEMN Compagnie Animotion

LEVIATHAN follows Ahab, a ship captain hell-bent on capturing the white whale:

Moby Dick, a beast as vast and dangerous as the sea itself, yet serene and

beautiful beyond all imagining.

Multi-award winning choreographer James Wilton re-imagines Herman Melville’s seminal novel, Moby Dick. Featuring a cast of 7, Wilton’s trademark blend of athletic dance, martial arts, capoeira and partner-work, LEVIATHAN will have you on the edge of your seat. It will leave you gasping for air under the sheer ferocity of movement, all accompanied by a powerful electro-rock soundtrack by Lunatic Soul.

LEVIATHAN is Man versus Nature; be careful what you fish for.

James Wilton Dance have done vast amounts of teaching and education work and have worked with many well established dance agencies including Sadler’s Wells, Youth Dance England, The Place, Swindon Dance and the BBC Performing Arts Fund. Below are some examples of education work that the company are able to offer.

Workshops Workshops with James Wilton Dance are energetic, engaging and inspiring. The

physicality of the movement, which shares a lot in common with martial arts and capoeira, is accessible and enjoyable for par-

ticipants, whilst still being fresh, new and challenging. Workshops can be tailored for any age group/ability and the company

have delivered to ages from 5-80 in the past as well as professionals dancers. James and his company stand as exceptional role

models for boys and are excellent at encouraging boys who have not danced before to take an interest in dance.

All teachers have enhanced CRB checks.

Workshops usually work to the following structure however they can be tailor made to suit specific requirements upon re-quest. In particular teaching partner work is a speciality of the company. Workshops begin with warm-up games that focus the participants and encourage team building.

Following this there will be a contemporary dance class, breaking down how to use the floor in Wilton’s unique style. There is also a great deal of focus on safety through the detailed breaking down of movement. The class is dynamic and fast-paced and is excellent exercise for both mind and body.

Following the technique class participants will learn phrases from Wilton’s new touring work LEVIATHAN. This energetic reper-toire will inspire and challenge students with its physicality and Intricacy. The day finishes with creative based partner work that allows students to create their own choreography with guidance from James Wilton Dance. This can form the starting point for the students own pieces. These tasks encourage creativity, team work and communication. The workshop finishes with a sharing of the participants work before a question and answer session led by the company.

Residencies

Residencies can take place over two or more days and allow students to take the next step with Wilton’s movement vocabu-lary. These intensives can be purely process led, or can result in the creation of a new dance work that the participants can then perform at dance platforms e.g. regional platforms, local theatres, arts centres and festivals.

Dance in a day

Dance in a day is a unique opportunity for participants to perform alongside James Wilton Dance as part of one of their eve-nings of work. As little as one day before the show James Wilton Dance can come and, over the space of one day, create a 4-6 minute work on a group of dancers. The group then perform as a curtain raiser for James Wilton Dance as part of their evening of work chaperones for those under 18 years of age will need to be provided by the venue or group). This serves as both an exciting opportunity for young dancers and a way of developing audiences for James Wilton Dance, as those who come to

New children’s ballet Goldilocks & the Three Bears is just right!

Over the last five years Northern Ballet’s award-winning series of Short Ballets for Small People, including Ugly Duckling and

Tortoise & the Hare, have been enthralling children up and down the country and through their TV adaptations by CBeebies.

They are now delighted to present their latest ballet for children, Goldilocks & the Three Bears.

Inspired by the classic children’s story, this is the perfect opportunity for your pupils to see this much-loved tale of mischief and

forgiveness beautifully retold through live dance, music and theatre. We are particularly proud of the opportunity that original

ballets such as this give for children to experience and enjoy theatre in an accessible way, as these performances have been

created specifically with children in mind.

Join Full House Theatre on a high jinks journey of joy and rediscovering of the past in their family show The Elves and The Shoemaker. In this topsy-turvy re-telling we meet Geoff, a lovable but forgetful retired shoemaker who is visited by two magi-cal Elf friends.

With toe-tapping music, laugh out loud characters and beautiful puppetry the Elves help Geoff to remember his glorious past.

He realises that a little bit of elf magic is all he needs to give his wife the only thing she’s ever wanted, just in time for her 90th

Birthday.

A gritty and explosive triple bill from the award winning 2Faced Dance Company.

Featuring three exhilarating works, RUN explores the darker side of humanity.

RUN brings together work by three female choreographers from across the globe in

an exploration of the human instinct for fight or flight.

RUN is a step forward for 2Faced Dance, the company which Tamsin founded 17

Years ago and which has won acclaim for a number of its previous works including In

the Dust, Dreaming in Code, Out of His Skin and Still Breathing.

“There is a link that runs through all three pieces. It sounds quite dark but it’s that exploration of the human soul. Each piece looks at how we exist as humans and how easy it is to fall into the dark side. So Rebecca Evans’ piece takes inspiration from horror movies and looks at fear and our relationship to fear. Mine looks at social consciousness and our inability to stand up for our own strong beliefs. And Lenka Vagnerová’s piece is about angels who fall to earth and are stuck between heaven and hell.

2Faced Dance workshops are suitable for ages 4 years and up. We tailor each workshop to the specific needs, ability and expe-

rience of each group. Workshops can be linked into curriculum modules of G.C.S.E, BTEC, A Level and Degree Level courses.

The unique 2Faced Dance style merges contemporary, street, ballet and breakdance alongside innovative choreographic tech-

niques and methods, offering students a variety of skills during workshops. All workshops offer the chance to students to learn

new, challenging dance moves in a safe environment and explore their creativity within dance.

Devised show that deals with questions of identity, perceptions of disability (and learning disability), the affects and changes to people’s support packages due to government budget cuts. This is all seen through the eyes of a two-foot-tall cloth puppet, Fred. He just wants to be a regular guy, part of the real world, to get a job and meet a girl, but when threatened with losing his PLA (Puppetry Living Allowance), Fred’s life begins to spiral out of his control. Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2016 sell out show Meet Fred is Sharp, funny and vastly entertaining (Lyn Gardner, The Guardian).

Comic, absurd, surreal, Max Calaf Seve present Anyday, a trampoline and physical theatre piece that will transcend expecta-tions of what circus show can be.

This may be the last day in this place.

Max may have been in this place for some time. And today, Max will pull us deeper into the intimate world he shares with his bird on his trampoline.

This world is a tender, heart-breaking world. A world filled with strange sounds, echoes of the past, and perhaps an idea of the future?

Comic, absurd, surreal, Anyday explores the archaeology of loneliness with light, darkness and ultimately joy.

Set to an original score by Matt Huxley, Anyday is a charming tale that transmutes the clangs and boings of unbearable hope to make our spirits soar.

Milk Presents bring to us an earthy story of courage, conviction and hope, this is Joan of Arc - possibly the world’s first drag king. Packed with guts, heart and some well-packaged cous-cous, JOAN is the latest daring fusion of lyrical new writing and anarchic cabaret from the multi-award winning Milk Presents.

Performed by drag king champion Lucy Jane Parkinson, history's greatest underdog takes the stage as a gutsy gender warrior, dragging up as the men she defies.

What happens when a disguise soon becomes something a lot more real and you have to fight for who you really are? With fearless new writing, uproarious songs and a cheeky bit of drag, JOAN explores what it means to stand out, stand up and stand alone.

The Gallery@ The Civic presents Fashion & Freedom, an exhibition which sees some of to-day's leading female fashion designers explore the impact the First World War had on the changing role of women and fashion. Co-commissioned by 14-18 NOW, the UK's arts pro-gramme for the First World War centenary and Manchester Art Gallery, with support from the British Fashion Council, the exhibition will include contemporary pieces by Vivienne Westwood, Roksanda, Holly Fulton, Emilia Wickstead, J JS Lee and Sadie Williams.

Mel Elliott is the Barnsley born illustrator known as one of the artists that kick-started the current trend of adult colouring books, with her brand I Love Mel.

Here, local artists, designers and illustrators pay homage to one of the greatest icons of Music, Fashion and Popular Culture, by deconstructing and decorating one of Mel’s best-selling titles, The David Bowie Colouring Book.

RPS International Print Exhibition Date: Saturday22 April - Saturday 3 June

The Royal Photographic Society’s International Print Exhibition is the longest-running exhibi-tion of its kind in the world. This year’s exhibition features an eclectic mix of work by 75 pho-tographers from 16 countries, and provides a fascinating insight into the range and diversity of photography today. With entries submitted by both amateur and professional photogra-phers, the IPE finalists and medal winners were selected by a panel including social docu-mentary photographer Dougie Wallace, Brighton Biennial Photo Festival director, Celia Da-vies and Picture Editor for The Sunday Times Magazine Russ O’Connell.

Sam Shendi: Mother and Child Date: Saturday 3 December (2016) - 28 January

Egyptian born, Yorkshire-based sculptor Sam Shendi creates joyfully coloured abstractions of

the human figure which, with the subtlest of indicators, hint at the complexity of human in-

teractions. Shendi’s works references the work of minimalism, focusing on the medium of

steel, aluminum and paint. In this exhibition Shendi analyses the age old subject Mother and
