ARR Soils Database
1 Introduction Between 1990 and 1993, some 300 soil samples were collected from throughout the ARR as part of the Revegetation Research program: Project 3208 – Characterisation of mine spoils for plant growth factors: I. Comparison of mine soils with natural soils for chemical properties that may affect growth and long-term viability of native plants.
Soil samples representing upper and lower or combined horizons were collected at Ranger, Nabarlek and Coronation Hill, from mine spoils, adjacent natural sites and from natural schist terrain at Tin Camp Creek. Additional sites were sampled from sandstone hill formations at Mt Cahill, Barramundi Hills and Spring Peak areas as well as from sites associated with Burrell Formation Schist near the Gimbat station/Fisher airstrip (figure 1).
2 Georeferencing A registry of these soils originally existed as a Quattro pro spreadsheet. Sample site locations were given by site names, location descriptions or by reference to site names, the co-ordinates of which, appeared in other project data directories.
Attempts have been made to georeference these sample sites through:
• Obtaining the corresponding co-ordinates cross-referenced to other project data sets.
• Relocating sites on current topographic maps.
• Checking registry files and other hard copy records containing maps and diagrams marking the location of sample sites.
During the period that these soils were collected, routine use of GPS technology had not yet been established at eriss. Site locations or sample points were usually defined broadly by Latitude and Longitude. Where a georeference was given in terms of a projected co-ordinate system, the relevant datum was invariably not stated.
For some of the ARR soil sample sites it can be reliably assumed that the AGD 66 datum would have been used. Co-ordinates for these sites have been reprojected to GDA 94 using a simple block shift transformation (ICSM, 1999). In the absence of any stated co-ordinates, attempts have been made to relocate sample sites on more recent 1:50 000 topographic maps using the WGS 84 datum, and the co-ordinates identified accordingly in the database.
The positional accuracy of sample site locations is indicated in the register as an error factor of +/- X m.
3 Analytical data All soil samples were submitted for a variety of chemical analyses and for physical (particle size) analysis. The particle size analysis was not completed for all samples due to the closure of the revegetation program and other priority commitments for the Geomorphology program carrying out these analyses.
Methods by which these soils were collected as well as for subsequent chemical analyses are outlined in appendix 1.

4 Database The datasets containing the soil collection register, chemical and particle size analyses have been incorporated into an Access database: ARR Soils Database, within which the following datatables appear:
Soil register – contains site locations, georeference co-ordinates and descriptions
Soil chem – contains results of all chemical determinations carried out by the eriss Chemistry section.
Soil DW – contains results of the proportion of >2mm dry weight fractions determined for undisturbed natural soils.
PSAdat – contain results of particle size analysis carried out by the Geomorphology section.
The common field: Reveg No links all the above tables.
Ref – is linked to Soil Register and contains References to other projects for which the study areas have been the sites for Revegetation research soil collection.
5 Physical collection The original physical soil samples of 2- 5kg were stored in plastic containers some of which were beginning to degrade. On March 2002 the contents of all intact containers were resampled into 600ml HDPE plastic jars. The Table Soil Register indicates those collection numbers (reveg No) for which a physical specimen currently exist, (Appendix 2).

Appendix 1: Methodology
1.1 Sample collection and processing Soil samples from most natural soils, revegetated spoils at Ranger and mine spoils at Coronation Hill, were collected using a hand auger (10 cm diameter). At Nabarlek WRD, the samples were collected by digging 15 cm diameter holes (30 cm deep) using a crow bar, and recovering the soil from the hole by trowel. At Ranger, a backhoe or jackhammer was used to excavate lm3 or 60 x 60 x 60-cm holes on bare WRDs or very low-grade (VLG) ore dumps. At each site, samples were taken from upper horizon (0-10 cm) and lower horizon (10-30 or 10-60 or 10-100 cm) or whole profile (0-60 or 0-100 cm). The whole profile was sampled on those sites where the rocks were recently moved, or where the WRD had no vegetation. Different sampling procedures were adopted for collecting samples from mine sites given that certain sites where not accessible to heavy machinery.
Where a hand auger was used, the samples were collected from each sampling unit in a zig zag configuration. Up to 20 cores were taken per sampling unit (minimum 8 cores) and all the samples within a sampling unit were mixed to obtain a composite sample. The area within which sample units were located varied depending on site, from 30 m x 60 m to 1 ha. Where deeper excavations were made (Ranger WRD and VLG), one location was chosen per sampling unit such that this location represented the characteristics of the sampling unit. Material from the 1 m3 or 60 x 60 x 60cm excavations was sieved on site using a 3 mm and 14 mm or sieve at Ranger WRD/VLG sites, to separate out the bulk of gravel and rock in the field. The sieved samples were reduced to 10-15 kg using a soil divider or by the 'cone and quarter' method. These samples were dried at 40°C and passed through a 2-mm sieve. The
