HEAD TEACHER’S WELCOME

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week formally marks the end of KS5 for our Y13 students and on behalf of the entire school community I wish them every success in their forthcoming exams. On Friday afternoon, the year group enjoyed a final leavers’ assembly and marked this important milestone by sharing a number of very special moments and achievements. The Head Teacher’s Award went to Phoebe Hayden for her amazing achievements in sport and for showing positivity and resilience in all that she determines to become. Congratulations Phoebe!

Y11 students have started their exams this week and are to be commended on the very mature way in which they have approached this important stage. Good luck Y11!

I am delighted to see that Sam Petersen, School Wellbeing Practitioner, has introduced himself in this home bulletin and has explained the new wellbeing project that our school community is involved in. I am sure we will all look forward to seeing the results of the surveys he is carrying out and to seeing the projects that emerge as part of this work.

It was lovely to see so many parents and carers at this week’s parents’ evening and to see so many constructive and positive discussions taking place.

I wish you all a very happy weekend and look forward to seeing students back in school on Monday morning.

Best wishes

Ms Baster

We are delighted to share with you the plans for the new ‘state of the art’ Sixth Form building planned for Stowupland High School. An application will go forward to Mid-Suffolk Council in October and the building should be open by September 2020 at the latest. The building will comprise of purpose built classrooms, a media/ICT suite, a multi purpose performance space and a cafe and common room. This will enable the Sixth Form to remain part of the school community and retain precious close ties, yet give our young adults a sense of autonomy. This has all been made possibly through the unerring support of JMAT trust and our partners at the University of Suffolk. The full plans are now on display in reception if you would like to view them and add your contribution in the comments book.

We had the great pleasure of hosting 37 students and 4 staff from the Minhang Foreign Language Middle School, Shanghai last week. They were with us for four days and made quite an impact in that short time. We had over 100 applications from year 8 students to take part in the mentoring project and 57 of those were chosen to participate. Only practicalities prevented us from choosing more but all Year 8 students had the opportunity to interact and learn from our visitors.

After the initial nervous meeting and a tour of the school, it was great to see solid friendships being built and the students clearly learned a great deal about each others’ lives and culture. Our students were surprised to learn that the school day in Shanghai begins at 7.00 am and does not end until 5.00 pm. The Shanghai students were mesmerised by the creativity they witnessed in our classrooms. Whilst with us, they experienced a Dance workshop with Mr Gray, cricket and cream tea (minus the cricket due to the rain), traditional board games and a host of lessons with their mentors. On Thursday they visited Cedars Park Primary School. Cedars Park has been doing work on Chinese culture and history and the staff had kept the visit a secret. I can only imagine the looks on their faces as real Chinese students entered their classroom to interact with them and bring everything they had learned about to life.

In the blink of an eye, or so it seemed, Friday was upon us and the mentors bade farewell to our guests. Gifts and photos were taken and exchanged, contact details swapped and promises of lifelong friendship were given. It is hoped that this visit will be the first step in an ongoing relationship with many mutual benefits. We have also received an invitation to pay a return visit to Shanghai....watch this space for details!

Last term, the drama department was tasked with finding the new 'Voice of

Stowupland'. This role entails recording the message on the answerphone to help calls

get to the correct department.

Following two tricky rounds of auditions, we have chosen Ezmay Wells 7AG. Well done

Ezmay! Ezmay will be recording our new messages soon!

VOICE OF STOWUPLAND

SUMMER CONCERT The Summer Concert was the last major performing arts event for this academic year.

It was a huge success and, although a rather short but sweet programme, it featured a

variety of dance and music performances from students of all ages. As per recent

tradition, Mr Cole's Ukulele Group kicked off the show with an instrumental rendition

of ‘Believer’ by Imagine Dragons, featuring Emma Balaam playing a solo on an electric

Ukulele. A number of the pieces performed were either composed or choreographed

by the students themselves. All performances were hugely successful, and particular

highlights were Samuel Taylor's BTEC Level 3 Music Compositions and Rose The's GCSE

Dance Choreography 'The End of the World'. The penultimate performance was given

by a year 7 Piano student, Jan Stachal, who performed Ludovico Einaudi's Nuvole

Bianche from memory! The show drew to a close with an inspiring and thought

provoking performance by Advance Fusion called 'Dear Future Generations'

Congratulations to all students who performed; I look forward to seeing what you

have to offer in our next big event, the Christmas Showcase.

Thank you to all who attended and support the event; the money raised will be put

towards investing in equipment that can be used across the performing arts

departments for future events.

Emotional Wellbeing Pilot Project at

Stowupland High School

Introducing Sam Petersen – School Wellbeing Practitioner

Hi,

I’m really excited to be starting this new role and wanted to take some time to briefly share with

you who I am and what it’s all about.

I work for The Mix, a charity in Stowmarket that exists to empower and enable young people to

change their personal world and the one we all share. The Mix has partnered with four other

organisations in Suffolk to launch a project called Vision & Voice.

Vision & Voice has been funded as a two-year pilot project with the aim of ‘improving the culture

of wellbeing’ in schools across Suffolk. Stowupland High School has been successful in its

application for this project along with three other High Schools in Ipswich, Woodbridge and

Leiston.

I will be based at Stowupland four days per week, with the others in the team based across the

other three schools. Our belief at Vision & Voice is that a mentally healthy school is one that

adopts a ‘whole school’ approach to mental health and wellbeing; one that sees positive mental

health, care and wellbeing as fundamental to its values, mission and culture. It is a school where

young people, staff and parent/carer mental health and wellbeing is seen as ‘everybody’s

business’.

The first part of the project involves working to identify the existing strengths of the school in

this area as well as opportunities for future development. In order to build a comprehensive pic-

ture, we are looking to listen to the views of all those involved in the life of the school. We would

love to hear from you and will be sending out a survey to start gathering feedback and ideas for

further development.

Over the next month we will also be running a Theory of Change workshop that will involve

everyone working together to develop a model for the school to take towards.

I look forward to hearing from you soon and will be sending out a parent/carer survey for you to

complete soon!

Sam

Mendlesham Primary School Visit – Thursday 23rd May

On Thursday 23rd May, the PE department will be working with Mendlesham Primary

School students and students from Ecole Jules Ferry, which is a primary school in

Northern France. During the morning, students from both schools will be working

together taking part in a range of physical activities. Activities will include striking and

fielding; invasion based games and athletics.

Students from Ecole Jules Ferry have been visiting Suffolk for a number of years and

have been working with Mendlesham over the last four years. Mendlesham students

in Years 5 and 6 last year had the opportunity to visit this school in France. They

visited various World War memorials and were treated like royalty being treated to

lunch and dinner in the Town Hall by the Mayor. Since then, students from

Mendlesham have kept up written correspondence with the school supported by Mrs

Thomas (Subject Leader for Modern Foreign Languages at Stowupland High

School). We are looking forward to their visit on Thursday 23rd May.
