Emmanuel Mennonite Church pastor releases new book‘Sacred Pauses’ about spiritual practices

The lead pas-tor at Emmanuel Mennonite Church in Abbotsford has written a new book about spiritual dis-

ciplines.Author April

Yamasaki said “Sacred Pauses: Spiritual Practices for Personal

Renewal” describes spiritual practices that can refresh and delight people, and even include “hav-ing fun” or “making

music.” The book includes

personal stories and scriptural allusions with references.

Yamasaki said the

book is “for all those seeking rest and personal renewal, whether or not they are already familiar with spiritual prac-

tice, whether or not they think of them-selves as spiritual, and whether or not they feel they are disciplined.”

Yamasaki has pub-lished numerous articles and sever-al books, including Remember Lot’s Wife and Other Unnamed Women of the Bible (FaithQuest) and Making Disciples: A Manual for Baptism and Church Membership (Faith & Life Press).

She has a bach-elor of arts degree from the University of British Columbia, and a master’s de-gree in Christian studies from Regent College in Vancouver. She has taught col-lege-level c o u r s e s in Bible a n d English, adult en-richment c o u r s e s on prayer and journalling, and seminars and re-treats on Christian living.

A third-generation Canadian of Chinese descent, Yamasaki was born and raised in Vancouver and lives in Abbotsford with her husband Gary, who teaches biblical studies at Columbia Bible College.

Yamasaki will sign copies of her book on Saturday, Feb. 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at House of James, 2743 Emerson St. in Abbotsford.

A fundraising dinner and dance for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice in Abbotsford takes place Saturday, Feb. 9.

The Sweethearts Ball will be held at Abbotsford Banquet Centre (33738 Laurel St.), starting at 6 p.m.

The Tim Barrett Jazz Trio and a 12-year-old vocalist will entertain.

Canuck Place Children’s Hospice is currently under construction as part of the Dave Lede Campus of Care ad-jacent to Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

Equestrian program a firstBoosts students’ confidence, says youth worker

Neveu, the aboriginal youth services worker at Abbotsford’s Robert Bateman Secondary, is the architect of the new Equestrian Program officially launched this week.

The program, ini-tially for aboriginal students, is a first for the Fraser Valley and the Lower Mainland. Eleven students from Grade 9 to 12 are cur-rently enrolled in the independent-study course, and plans are underway to in-troduce a full eques-trian curriculum this September.

Neveu has been around horses her whole life – her dad taught the RCMP Musical Ride – and she wanted to share that experience with young people.

About two years ago, she was helping out a barn in Abbotsford, and she thought it would be a great place to take some of the students from the school.

She saw how the interaction with the animals helped to boost the kids’ confi-dence. Most of them had never been near horses before, and they developed inter-personal, teamwork and goal-setting skills as they learned how to care for and ride the animals.

Neveu approached, among others, Perry Smith, district princi-pal of aboriginal edu-cation, with the idea of creating a full se-mester program.

Smith loved the idea.

“We saw it as a great opportunity for aboriginal students to build healthy self-esteem … and build a sense of mastery – that they can be suc-cessful at something.”

Some programming was offered last sum-mer, and the program began in September.

Students visit the barns twice a week, and they are matched with the horse of their selection.

They also have three classes a week at the school. Throughout the pro-gram, they learn such skills as horse and barn safety, grooming and saddling, lunging (exercising horses on

a long lead line) and riding.

Instruction is pro-vided by Neveu, along with three professional train-ers at Cayley Wilson Performance Horses in south Abbotsford.

Other organiza-tions involved in the partnership with the school include the district aboriginal ed-ucation department, Farm Credit Canada and Horse Council B.C.
