PILOT ROCK In Oregon’s Western Cascades, Pilot Rock rises thousands of feet above the Rogue and Shasta Valleys. The area’s original Native American inhabitants, the Takelma, called it Tan-ts'at-seniphtha, or Stone Standing Up. In its shadow, the Takelma (“those along the river”) built villages of semi-subterranean homes. Net fishing, hunting and foraging allowed the Takelma to live harmoniously along the Rogue River. Arrows represent salmon swimming into nets, and large baskets overflow with abundant acorns and camas.

FOSSIL SPRINGS The powerful waters of Fossil Springs rise from the bottom of a 1600-feet deep canyon in Cococino National Forest, in Arizona. Every minute, 20,000 gallons of calcium-laden water pour out, laying down deposits of travertine limestone and creating fossils that inspire the area’s name. In the center of the pattern, the springs surge to the surface, flowing out to fuel the wild waters of Fossil Creek, one of only two “Wild and Scenic” rivers in Arizona to be protected under the federal Wild and Scenic Rivers Program.

THIS MOUNTIAN OF MINE By Logan Maxwell HagegeA lone rider pauses before a towering blue peak in “This Mountain of Mine,” echoing the relationship between man and mountain, artist and nature. Logan Maxwell Hagege is a Los Angeles based contemporary artist whose modern visions of the American West use signature clouds and repeating shapes to echo flora and figures in the foreground, creating a visual narrative for each composition. His use of natural light and color distills shapes to their essence, while celebrating their complexity.
