Thanks to all the terrific support for the recent St. Isidore Parish rummage sale…. We

grossed over $1500 for the parish. Thanks to all those who provided us with some nice things to sell….to those who helped with the “lugging”,

packing up, setting up, taking down and buying some of our items. Special thanks to Ken Sabel for the use of his trailer to transport items. The Rummage committee had a fun time!

After dinner one night, I asked my son Jimmy to fetch a broom from the back porch so I could sweep the floor.

Complaining, he said, “But it’s dark out there. I’m afraid.”

I said to him, “It’s OK, God is with you.” Slowly Jimmy opened the porch door and said, “God, if you’re out there, would you hand me the broom?” - Readers Digest

They made signs, asking his father what he wished

him to be called. He asked for a tablet and wrote, "John is his name," and all were amazed.

Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke blessing God.

From the Pastor’s Desk: June 24, 2018

Recently, I have joked that I once had a doctor, dentist, and an eye doctor and that now I have a medical team. This is probably a bit of an exaggeration. Still, I have been grateful for expressions of support and thought I would clarify where I am at. I like to think that I am engaged in a 60 year tune-up!

Since early March I have been dealing with herniated discs. I have been dealing with a nurse practitioner, a chiropractor, a physical therapist and a massage therapist to deal with this situation. On Friday, June 8th I received my

first epidural injection. At this point I am pain-free and hoping to avoid surgery. This is also highlighted for my importance of insurance and my gratitude for being insured.

My eye doctor has referred me to an eye surgeon because of the development of cataracts. I also have narrow angles (which I don't fully understand) that required a laser procedure before I can have my pupils dilated to see how severe the cataracts are and whether I am a candidate for cataract surgery. The thought of improved vision is particularly attractive to me.

At the urging of my new primary physician, I had a sleep study done which confirmed that I have severe sleep apnea. I now have a CPAP machine and I ask your prayers that I adjust to it as it can be a lifesaver. I urge anyone who snores or does not sleep well at night to investigate this treatment. I am amazed at how many friends and acquaintances have come forward to tell me they have been using a CPAP machine for months or years.

I am also occasionally seeing a counselor to address how I deal with stress. There is a stigma in our society, especially for men, that we “can handle it ourselves.” There is no shame in seeking help and a great benefit from time to time to having someone outside of one’s circle of relationships with whom to talk. I encourage anyone dealing with stress or other mental health issues to seek help if possible. There is no shame in admitting we are imperfect!

Ten years ago when I turned 50 I had a colonoscopy. The doctor told me to come back in ten years. That went fast! Again, if you are over 50 and have not had a colonoscopy I urge you to consider it.

My dentist has no concerns at this time! There you have it. Again, thank you to anyone who has expressed concern. I see all of this as a natural part of aging and recognize that there are some other steps that I need and will be taking to improve my health.

Since my First Profession as a Capuchin-Franciscan, I have used these words of St. Francis of Assisi as my personal mission statement: "We have been called to heal wounds, to unite what has fallen apart, and to bring home those who have lost their way." Sometimes, the wounds that need healing and the body that feels like its falling apart is one’s own!

I hope that by sharing some of my health issues I can nudge others to take the steps necessary to maintain and improve their own health.

Peace and all good,

Fr. Gary

I am pleased to report that Julie Petrie, our Holyland Catholic

Schools Safe Environment Coordinator has completed and I have

A Reflection on the Gospel:

June 24, 2018

The Nativity of Saint John

the Baptist

Tiny fingers and toes. A little

yawn. A loud cry. An infant

wrapped in swaddling clothes. "What will this child be?" It

is a question every parent asks time and time again. As first

steps are taken, as personalities emerge, as a child shows

interest in reading or drawing or climbing, the question is

on our lips. "What will this child be?" This question is

asked as John the Baptist is born. Will he be a priest like

his father? Does his strange, unexpected name signal a

departure from that inheritance? Could Elizabeth and

Zechariah ever have predicted what would be?

Under the tutelage of his priestly father, John "became

strong in spirit." As an adult, John would retreat into the

desert to preach repentance. He would attract a large

following and eventually attract the attention of the rulers

of the day. He would point out the adulterous ways of King

Herod and would find himself in prison. Eventually, he

would be beheaded. But today, he is a child, an infant

newly born.

On this special feast, we're reminded of the great humility

required of parents. The character formation, the discipline

and encouragement, the violin lessons and soccer

practices ..every parental effort is subjected to the decisions

of the child themself. Even children on a sure track by high

school graduation transform under life's circumstances.

Entrusting our children to God can be incredibly

intimidating. "What will this child be," especially when

that transformation lies outside of my control? John the

Baptist's story might not have ended as his parents

imagined. But he is celebrated as the greatest of the

prophets, as the one who prepared the way for the Messiah.

Here is the hope of all Christian parents -- that our children

would be raised in such a way that when people meet them,

they meet Jesus Christ.

Pope Francis: “Love is always at the service of

others. Because love is seen in actions, not words.”
