Christmas Collection - Thank you!

As of the date this bulletin was prepared, we have collected $42,510 towards our Christmas collection which meets and now slightly exceeds our budget of $42,000. Thanks you for your generous support! These funds are critical for the parish operations over the winter. Your response is reflective of the warm and generous spirit you displayed as we celebrated the Nativity of the Lord, Jesus Christ at Holy Trinity. God bless you and your families.

Gospel Meditation January 6, 2019 The Epiphany of the Lord

"Behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying

'Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star

at its rising and have come to do him homage.'" How

strange to journey so far for perhaps so little. Of course

the magi go to the capitol city. Of course they entreat with

King Herod. Of course this is where they expect newborn

royalty to be. But where is the child? "In Bethlehem of

Judea," the scribes say. And so the magi go on to what is

yet another Christmas miracle.

We don't know where the magi met the Christ Child, but it

cannot have been lavish. Perhaps it was the stable.

Perhaps it was a small hovel Joseph had found to wait out

the census. But it would have been the home of a laborer,

worn and threadbare. Here, in this unassuming abode, the

magi are still "overjoyed...they prostrated themselves and

did him homage."

Have you ever gotten to the end of a great work and found

the results to be underwhelming? How did you respond?

Were you disappointed or elated at God's providence and

your upended expectations? The magi journeyed hundreds

of miles over treacherous terrain to pay homage to royalty

they have seen prophesied in the stars. They encountered

an ordinary family displaced from their home. This Sunday,

the magi are an example for us. Can we see God in the

unexpected? Do we encounter Him in the person who

doesn't fit our expectations of propriety? Do we revere

Christ's presence in the poor? Or do we expect to meet

God only in places of honor and esteem? This week, ask

God for the grace to honor Him in the unexpected places

and unassuming people. He is waiting for you!

Seek out His counsel while sitting silently in His Presence. Surrender your burdens and anxieties to Him and, in return, He will grant you His peace.

Living the spiritual life is developing a set of behaviors. Make one of these behaviors an hour-long, weekly visit with your Lord and Savior at the Sacred Heart Chapel of Eucharistic Adoration.

Don't miss out! Add your name to the list of registered adorers, who can testify to the many blessings and benefits received because of the time they spent in His Presence.

For more information about becoming a registered adorer, contact Joe or Maureen Garro at 630-968-3855 or [email protected].

History of Epiphany House Blessing

In our church, on the feast of Epiphany, we write initials over the doorway, what does this stand for or mean?

In many Slavic traditions, Epiphany is observed by marking the year on the mantle of the entrance to a room or house. In the center are the initials of the traditional names of the three wise men: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. The purpose is to ask God's blessing on the home, marking it as though the wise men had come and found therein the Christ Child. It reminds us of the marking of the doorways in Egypt with the blood of the lamb so that the angel of death would pass over. God's blessing comes to each home as a source of protection and grace.

Epiphany Blessing

All make the Sign of the Cross.

Leader: “Peace be to this house and to all who dwell here, in the name of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God.

Reader: When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.

The word of the Lord.

ALL: Thanks be to God

Using chalk, write on the outside of your house or inside above the front main entrance, above or next to an entrance:

+20 C M B 19+

All: Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only begotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who live here and all who visit. May we be blessed with health, kindness of heart, gentleness and the keeping of your law. Fill us with the light of Christ, that our love for each other may go out to all. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Inspiration for the Week

We all have had the experience of walking into a dark room and searching for the light switch. If we are really unfamiliar with the space, anxiety, uncertainty, disorientation, and even fear can easily arise. Once we find the light, all is illuminated and we are at peace. Our light has come into the world! The glory of God has been revealed!

Today's feast of the Epiphany teaches us to look to our Savior, Jesus Christ, for the way to truly be the human beings we were created to be. He shows us how to prioritize our lives, order our relationships, care for creation, and live as daughters and sons of God. God's love and creative power is universal, transcending all races and nations. Jesus brings the light of peace to a broken world that still struggles to understand itself and to you and I who also struggle to understand who we are.

May we find ourselves overjoyed that we have found our truth and allow Jesus to bring light to the darkness of our lives!

Want to direct your Illinois tax dollars to support Catholic Education? Invest in Kids Act – Give a Scholarship, Get a Tax Credit

Illinois enacted the Invest in Kids Scholarship Tax Credit Program in 2017. This program allows individuals to fund a scholarship benefiting an eligible student at Holy Trinity School (or other qualifying school/organization) and receive 75% of their total donation back in Illinois state tax credits. For example, if a donor makes a gift of $4,000, they will be eligible to claim $3,000 in tax credits.

About this Program

The Invest in Kids Act, in conjunction with Empower Illinois, works to expand quality educational options for low-income and working class families in Illinois. It is the newest tax credit scholarship program in the Unites States, and the largest scholarship granting organization in Illinois. To date, over 32,000 students have applied for scholarships and 4,780 students received scholarships. The typical scholarship recipient is from a family of four with an income of $43,168. The median scholarship donation is $4,000.

How this Program Works…

For every $1 donated, the donor receives a $0.75 tax credit on their Illinois income tax liability. Individual donations are made through Empower Illinois and can be designated to Holy Trinity. Gifts cannot be deducted from one’s Federal taxable income. Scholarships are awarded to children living with families that are within 300% of the Federal Poverty Level; the majority are within 185%.

Impact at Holy Trinity School…

Last year, Holy Trinity received nearly $32,000 in donations, which provided scholarships for 7 Holy Trinity students. Although these gifts had a great impact on these families, there were 13 additional students on the list who were eligible but did not receive a scholarship. This year, our goal is to meet 100% of our need, providing scholarships to 20 students who would otherwise not be able to afford Holy Trinity!

Our Goal – 2019

Our 2019 goal is ambitious. We wish to collect $80,000 in donations, which would be used to provide scholarships for 20 Holy Trinity students (as well as to generate $60,000 in state of Illinois tax credits).

How to Get Started…

If you are interested in applying for these tax credits, log in to mytax.illinois.gov to create an account. Holy Trinity suggests consulting your personal tax professional about the implications, benefits, and processes of donating to this scholarship program.
