From the Pastor’s Desk...

The day of our baptismal commitment is the most important day of our Christian lifetime. The most famous of all American Catholic scripture scholars was a man by the name of Fr. Raymond E. Brown. He stated it even more forcefully. He wrote, “The day a person is baptized is more important than the day when a person is ordained a priest and bishop.” Reflect on his statement for a moment, if you would. How important is our own Baptism?

In today’s Gospel for the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, Jesus appears at the Jordan and is baptized by John. What happens is significant. Jesus is set to begin His public ministry and, after His Baptism, the heavens were opened, the Holy Spirit appeared as a dove, and the words from heaven are heard: “You are my beloved Son, with you I am well pleased.” God so loves those baptized in the Spirit, that all become the beloved sons, and daughters of God.

Be clear on this point: God has first loved us. He has done so through the amazing grace of Baptism, which is a Baptism of forgiveness and mercy, displaying the perfect love of God. All baptized Christians possess that powerful presence of God’s grace in their lives, a grace which enables us to overcome sin and lead lives of mercy and forgiveness. Our Baptism is the moment of commission, the moment when our Christian identity is conferred.

So, what should our response be to this grace of Baptism? Our response should be lives of mercy, forgiveness, and grace, reflecting the love and goodness God has first shown us. We should live as adopted sons and daughters of God. People should be able to look at what we do, listen to what we say, see how we live our lives and from all that conclude TO WHOM WE BELONG. Everything about our lifestyle should demonstrate that we are the beloved sons and daughters of God. Why not just adopt this style of Christian living in this new year?

Have a Good Week!

Fr. Bill Arnold

It has been a great year for St. Vincent de Paul! Through the generosity of parishioners from both parishes, we were able to help many. Our pantry served 4,038 households, (16,342 people), broken down as follows: age 60+ – 1849; age 18-59 - 8,266; age 0-17 – 6227. The total new households served was 547 (2,083 people): age 60+ – 131; age 18-59 – 1034; age 0-17 - 918. The total meals provided was 147,078. The Food Pantry still needs your help with our blanket drive. Our goal is to give each family a new queen size blanket. We will be at the doors after Mass collecting your donations to purchase as many blankets as we can. We thank you for your generosity to our pantry, and also for participating in our projects, the giving trees, and our blanket and school supply collections. Your St. Vincent De Paul Volunteers

Please remember in your prayers all the sick, homebound or recovering in our parish, especially Pat Berry, Yolanda Brandel, Bob Brooks, Helen Brunet, Becky Fouts, Nancy Glover, Della Varacalli, and Thomas Wagner. Also, pray for those in our parish coping with physical and mental conditions. Your prayers will strengthen them during their times of trial.

Attention, All Ministers: Please check your email for the tentative schedule through May. We have MANY spots that need to be filled. Please let Marti know where you can assist or if there are any conflicts. The schedule will be finalized and available by January 18th.

What is Ordinary Time? After today, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the Church returns to Ordinary Time. This period will extend until Tuesday, March 5th, the day before Ash Wednesday. It will begin again on Monday, June 10th, the day after the celebration of Pentecost, and extend all the way until the Saturday before the first Sunday of Advent, Saturday, November 30, 2019.

Keep in mind that every Sunday is intended to be a “little Easter.” Sunday, the first day of the week, witnessed Jesus Christ rising from the dead. Our weekly Church liturgy centers around this central mystery of belief of Christian faith – the Resurrection.

The great liturgical seasons of Advent-Christmas and Lent-Easter are expansive celebrations of the Church’s belief in Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Son of God, who in the great act of redemption became flesh, was crucified, and rose from the dead. These two seasons are given added emphasis since they recall the central events of Salvation History.

But no Sunday is “ordinary.” It is the day of the Lord, at the same time the goal of every week and the beginning of the next. Sundays are the “fabric” of Christian living – we offer our thanks to God in the celebration of the Eucharist. We hear the Gospel proclaimed and are fed with the Bread of Life, the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ Himself.

Let’s just say this: Ordinary Time refers to the prayers and worship of the Church outside of the Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter celebrations. The color used for the Sunday Mass is green, as well as for weekdays whose liturgy celebrates no particular saint or feast.

To all the Men of St. Philip and Holy Spirit Parishes: The Catholic Men’s Conference will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2019, at the Ohio Expo Center in Kasich Hall (formerly Cardinal Hall)on the Ohio State Fairgrounds. Be a part of the largest Catholic Men’s Conference in the country! Plans are being formulated to encourage and allow as many men as possible to attend. Mr. Mark Decker is going to provide leadership in this effort. We need to know the following:

1. Who would like to attend?2. Who might need car-pool transportation from St.

Philip and Holy Spirit?3. Who might need financial assistance to cover the

cost of attending?

Propagation of the Faith Collection Next Weekend: This collection enables the Church to continue its healing and saving work among the poorest of our sisters and brothers. In more than 1,150 mission dioceses worldwide, priests, religious brothers and sisters, and lay catechists rely on the prayers and financial assistance from SPOF, as they minister to young people, refugees, and the sick in hospitals, as they teach children in schools, prepare adults for Baptism, or help those who suffer because of war and natural disasters. Envelopes are in your packets

time for us to finally have our James study! I hope you’re able to join us. James is one of the most practical books of the Bible, collecting teachings on issues faced by ordinary Christians in everyday life. This 10-part study offers “pearls for wise living” by applying the wisdom of James to our present day. Classes will take place on Sunday evenings in the Holy Spirit Parish Office. The study will begin with an information meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 27 and the study will end on Sunday, April 7. For more information, please e-mail [email protected].

Columbus Catholic Women’s Conference: Mark your calendar with the date for the Columbus Catholic Women’s Conference, February 16th. The conference will be held at the Ohio Expo Center and feature Anna Mitchell, Fr. Christopher Hartley, Colleen Mitchell, Magnus Macfarlane-Barrow and St. Faustina Maria Pia, S,V. with music provided by Lori Ubowski & Out of Darkness. THIS WEEKEND, OUR FEATURED ADVERTISER IS

Last week was National Migration Week: For nearly a half century, the Catholic Church in the U.S. has celebrated National Migration Week, which is an opportunity for the Church to refl ect on the circumstances confronting migrants, including immigrants, refugees, children, and victims and survivors of human traffi cking. This year’s theme, “Building Communities of Welcome,” draws attention to the fact that each of our families has a migration story, some recent and others in the distant past. Regardless of where we came from, we remain part of the human family and are called to live in solidarity with one another.

Unfortunately, in our contemporary culture we often fail to encounter migrants as persons, and instead look at them as unknown others, if we even notice them at all. We do not take the time to engage migrants in a meaningful way, as fellow children of God, but are suspicious or fearful of them. Let us all take the opportunity to engage migrants as community members, neighbors, and friends.

We Americans currently are engaged in a great debate about legal (and illegal) immigration. We are supposed to be, as Christians, people of conscience and Gospel faith. As I often have said from the pulpit, we need to see and love all people as God sees and loves them. We should apply our Christian moral beliefs to how we treat people – what could be simpler than that? Every nation has the right to protect its borders in a lawful and legitimate way. As Catholics, we must demonstrate mercy and compassion. I do not think these values contradict each other.

The Christmas Season: Christmas Day in contemporary American culture is observed as the end point of weeks of decorating, holiday festivities and, of course, shopping. Many commercial terms of our economic system were coined as they relate to the

purchase of goods – “Black Friday” (after Thanksgiving) and “Cyber Monday,” not to mention individual store “return policies” for gifts that didn’t work, please, or fi t.

Christmas Day, in the Church, marks the beginning of the Christmas Season. It begins with the Masses of the Christmas Vigil, includes the Feasts of the Holy Family, Mary, the Mother of God, and the Epiphany, and comes to a conclusion with the Baptism of the Lord. With the exception of Christmas and Mary, the Mother of God, all these feasts have moveable dates on the calendar.

Our Church decorations – hopefully those in our homes as well – refl ect the Christmas season to the very end. This gulf between the pre-Christmas buildup and the actual celebrations of Christmas in our Church grows wider each year, due primarily to the earlier and earlier preparations for the commercial holiday giving season. Refl ect, if you will, on what has actually happened over these last many years. When do we actually observe the “Christmas Season” in our faith life, or has that been swallowed up by the two month long seasonal and commercial buildup?

RCIA Dinners Needed: Do you love to cook? Are you looking for a way to support the evangelization efforts at Holy Spirit Parish? Each session of our RCIA program begins with dinner for the participants, their sponsors, and

the team members (approximately 10 people). Sessions are on Monday evenings and we need volunteers who can donate/prepare meals from Advent through Pentecost. This is a great way to meet our candidates and catechumens and welcome them to our parish. Please contact Mark Butler at 614-861-1521, ext. 12 for more information or to sign up.
