Helpful hints for this week’s readings

Christ’s Really Here – Are You?

I know a young man who went through a time so tough that he entered a rehabilitation program

for people suffering depression. He took only a few things with him. One was a picture of him with

his closest friends. I believe he took that because it reminded him how much they cared, and

those memories gave him strength and comfort during his tough times.

Don’t we have pictures or letters we keep close for lonely nights or painful days? We find them

when we need a reminder that people really do care. I don’t know about you, but the people I

love seem really present when I see them in a picture or read letters they wrote to me.

If that makes sense to you, then you are on your way to understanding Christ’s real presence in

the Eucharist. Early Christians scared some people because they talked about eating someone’s

body and blood. Obviously, that’s not what Christians do. But Christ is fully present in the forms of

bread and wine, even though you cannot physically observe it.

Remembering a close friend who isn’t physically present can remind you that you are loved and

cared for. Your friend’s presence can still be very real at those times. How much more can Jesus

Christ – who is truly present in the Eucharist – offer us comfort, strength, and challenge when we

eat and drink at the Eucharistic table.

Here’s something else to think about. This week don’t ask whether Christ is really present during

the Mass. Ask yourself whether you are really present. Let’s say you call a friend on the phone for

help. He or she can be really present as a good listener and adviser. But if you aren’t really present

– if you don’t pay attention or open your mind – then you’re likely to miss the support your friend

is offering. The same is true during the Eucharist. Focus in the coming weeks on being really

present during Mass. Greet the people sitting next to you. Listen and respond to the prayers and

readings. Sing the songs. As you receive the body and blood, pray for strength and guidance in

problems you face. I guarantee you’ll meet a great friend there just waiting for you.

When have you found strength, hope, comfort, or peace during a Mass?

Climate change petition Please sign the petition (on clip boards in the foyer) to the House of Representatives requesting their attention to the severe and urgent threat that climate change poses to the health, well-being and security of all people, especially our poorest and most vulnerable neighbours.

Project Roster continues We are continuing to add all the information from the Call to Ministry sheets into a spreadsheet as we prepare to move to a three-monthly roster. Some of the planned changes are as follows:

Encourage active use of the website;

Promote the knowledge that this is not a life-time commitment.

Thank you for your patience and if you have any questions or comments, we would encourage you to send them to Naomi in the Parish Office – [email protected]

Planned Giving 2017/18 If you were not here, or missed, our Planned Giving presentations over the past few weeks, please fill out a Pledge Form (cream) and if giving by Direct Debit, a Direct Debit Form (white or apricot), which can be obtained in the church foyer. Due to the fact that our office wages have nearly doubled since 2013 to around $140,000, the parish is now running at a loss and is predicted to do so for a few years unless we can increase our income through our Planned Giving income. With this in mind, please give generously as Your Parish Needs Your Help.

Welcome to Elisha Lee and Sarah Campbell who entered fully into the Catholic Church on Pentecost Sunday. Sarah received all of the Sacraments of Initiation and Elisha First Eucharist and Confirmation. Both Elisha and Sarah participated in the RCIA and we look forward to welcoming them into the life of the Parish and journeying with them as they discover God's love for them and all people.

Positions Vacant in following Ministry We have vacancies for Mass Coordinators at ALL Masses. This is a rewarding role and is pivotal to the reverent and smooth preparation prior to and after Mass. The more people who can participate in this Ministry will ensure that the load is shared. If you have an inkling that this might be a Ministry for you, please ask Fr Mark or a member of the Parish team for further information or contact Maureen at [email protected] .
