The 1st Sunday of Lent Life can easily spin us out of control. While there are so many wonderful

opportunities before us, we can also get easily distracted and exhausted. There is

always something to do, respond to, or check. The clutter of our lives can take us off

course, and the best remedy for getting back on track is the experience of the desert.

Here we can face our demons square on, resist them, and get back on course. We

desperately need the season of Lent. This simple time of year forces us into greater

awareness and grounds us in what is good and true. What weighs you down and

keeps you trapped? Maybe you are trying to do too much and please too many

people. It could be that your fragile self-image is always pushing you to prove

yourself and find success. Anxiety and worry, ultimately due to a lack of faith, can

quickly tempt you with despair. It could be that you are listening to too many voices

and allowing all of the negativity that is present erode the genuine goodness in your

heart and in all of God’s creation. Or maybe you struggle too much with fear. Perhaps

so much so that you are far too preoccupied with your own agenda and goals and left

with little psychological or spiritual room to consider and respond to the plight of

your neighbor. Do anger, bitterness, stubbornness, and hatred have homes in your

heart? How about greed, gluttony, pride, apathy, or lust? For many, their passions and

what can be found on the internet are their downfall, and they are robbed of their

inner life and freedom. What is it, specifically, that tempts you away from a childlike

trust in God? Define this and use the next few weeks to allow God to chart you a

course away from them. Silence, being alone, grace, honesty, struggle, tears, and

dryness are all found in the desert. You will also find God and your true self in this

holy place. Ready to go?

CONFESSIONS

DURING LENT

LENTEN REGULATIONS:

1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United

States.

2. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to

one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. No one should consider this obligation lightly.

Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obliged to fast but should

perform some other act of penance or charity.

Weekend Mass Celebrants

2nd Sunday of Lent

The first Sunday of the season of Lent

always includes a Gospel account of

the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the

desert by the devil. This year, the sto-

ry is set against the backdrop of the

first reading from Genesis, which re-

counts the very first temptation by the

devil. That story is set in a garden of delight. The Gospel

story is set in the desert. As believers, we know that tempta-

tion comes our way in our own gardens of delight as well as

the deserts of our lives. As Lent begins, our attention is

drawn to that temptation within each of us to become like

God—we want control, power, and answers to all of life’s

difficult questions. As communities of faith, we are given

this season of repentance so that we can join our hearts with

others on the difficult journey of conversion. We look to

God and to one another for strength against temptation.

THE FOLLOWING MASSES

Catechesis of the

Good Shepherd

SAMPLER! A taste of RICH (Spiritual)

FOOD in SMALL BITES.

Does a child have the capacity to know God?

We may ask: “How does the child’s love for God help us to

know God better with all our heart, all our mind, and with our

entire self!”

What exactly is Catechesis of the Good Shepherd?

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd takes place in an atri-

um, a sacred, hands-on space in which both children and cate-

chists can hear, ponder, and celebrate the essential mysteries of

the Catholic faith as revealed in scripture and the liturgy.

Who should attend? Why attend?

This “sampler” covers basic biblical, theological and liturgi-

cal themes of the Catholic faith as well as the developmental and

religious characteristics of the 3-6 year old child. The 4 two hour

sessions are presented in a variety of formats: lectures, discus-

sion, prayer, and will be rich in Scripture, liturgy, and sacred

history. With visits and reflection in our Level I atrium.

All are WELCOME!

DATES: Tuesdays, March 10, 17, 31,

and April 7. 12:30 - 2:30 pm

Saint Catherine of Sweden Church, Farmer Hall

2554 Wildwood Road, Allison Park PA 15101

Presenter: Mrs. Gretchen Homer

There is no cost for this afternoon retreat!

HOLY SEPULCHER PARISH • BUTLER, PA

Parish Share preaches the Gospel throughout our region by:

● Supporting parishes, schools, and programs. Parish Share

provides resources necessary for parishes, schools, and

programs throughout our diocese to show the presence of

Christ with us.

● Supporting the needs of older adults and the less fortunate.

Catholic Charities, Roselia Center and Mon Valley Social

Services are among the many social programs receiving Parish

Share support.

● Nurturing young Catholics. Through campus and youth

ministry programs, Parish Share helps to bolster the spiritual

development of young adult Catholics.

● Providing formation and training for permanent deacons.

Your contribution provides for the formation of permanent

deacons who are training to serve in active ministry throughout

the diocese.

● Helping parishes to promote the Gospel of Life. Parish Share

helps in educating parishioners on pro-life issues, counseling

women and teenagers in crisis, and reaching out to women and

men suffering from the trauma of abortion.
