Holy Martyrs El Salvador Ministry
Welcome to this week’s El Salvador article. Today’s article provides a little background information on some of
the students whose education Holy Martyrs sponsors. Hopefully this helps provide the human face and create
more of a connection with our mission in La Libertad.
Giovanny Antonio Delgado Escobar
Giovanny comes from a family of six, including his grandmother, two siblings, and his
parents. His mom is a cook at a restaurant, and his dad is a fisherman. Giovanny is a
medical student at the Universidad de El Salvador, and will be beginning his residency
this year. In his own words, “The career is tough, but it’s worthy. Every five months a
new cycle begins, and I am studying a different and more profound topic.” He is also a
collaborator for a visual health campaign to promote eye care. Giovanny is doing well,
and is excited to be working more with patients. He plans on working at the national
hospitals in his own country after graduation, and “with God’s help, specialize in one
area of medicine.” His faith carries over to his parish where he participates in liturgy
planning.
Carmen Elena Rivas Cruz
Carmen has three siblings, Carlos, Armando, and Sylvia, each of whom has a family
of their own. Carmen’s father passed away on 2016. To continue her education,
Carmen lives with her mother and works part-time in a parochial school. She is in
her third year of study for her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and
Tourism, and works hard at her studies and is doing very well academically at the
Technical University of San Salvador. Carmen hopes to help her mother after
graduation by putting her degree into practice. Carmen is also an active member
of the Youth Pastoral in her church – a group she considers to be her second
family.
Ana Mercedes Flores Cisneras
Mercedes, 34, comes from a family of three. Her father lost some of his vision
in an accident, and was unable to continue working in construction. Her mother
has both technical and secretarial degrees, but due to chronic illness, had to
forego her career and now sells clothing in the municipal market. Mercedes had
to interrupt her education in order to help support her family, but now with
financial assistance, is able to resume her studies. She is currently studying
Business Administration, as well as Ethics, First Aid, and the contemporary
history of El Salvador at the Universidad Dr. José Matías Delgado in La Libertad.

Thank You for Your Generosity
The parishioners of Holy Martyrs have come through
for the Christmas Give-A-Gift program in a big way.
They donated gifts given to local families, and to
Community Services, St. Augustine's, La Sagrada
Familia, and the Battered Women's Shelter. HM Kids
families also gave food and toys for those less
fortunate. The parishioners also came through with
cash donations that will keep our food pantry for the
needy in operation throughout the winter months.
Thank you for your generosity and all you do to help
the needy of our parish family and community over
the holidays.
Serve With A Heart Like Jesus
Opportunities to serve will continue throughout
2020. Please consider how you can contribute. Many
hands make light work.

Protecting God’s Children
For three weeks every January, our HMKids students in grades 1-6 learn skills that help them protect
themselves from child molesters. Children are taught how to recognize boundary violations that precede
abuse, remove themselves from uncomfortable situations and tell a trusted adult when someone has crossed
a boundary.
Praesidium developed a curriculum with age-appropriate lessons for each grade level.
Second graders will learn about listening to their “gut” or intuition when it tells them something’s not
right.
Third graders will learn about different types of secrets and how to recognize a “bad” secret. They’ll also
learn what to say to a trusted adult when someone has asked them to keep a secret that makes them feel
unsafe.
An important part of what fifth graders learn relates to limiting private information shared online.
The Diocese of Cleveland requires that these skills be taught every year to children in grades 1-8. SPIRIT
students (grades 7 and 8) will receive this training in January as well.
This training for children is the “other arm of Virtus”, which educates adults about what to watch for when
they see adults interacting with children.
SPIRIT will be back in session on Sunday, January 12, 2020
Holy Martyrs SPIRIT is now on Facebook and we have also joined Snapchat under hmcSPIRIT. Please make sure
that you download the We Connect Parish App and select Holy Martyrs Catholic Church, then subscribe to SPIRIT
for any weather related cancellations.

distant – thinking about a separation or divorce? Are you
already separated/divorced but both of you want to try
again? Then the Retrouvaille program may help.
RETROUVAILLE, which means rediscovery, is supported by
the Catholic diocese of Cleveland, but it is open to couples
of all faiths. This program consists of a weekend experience
for couples and six follow up sessions.
A registration fee of $150 is required to confirm your
