The Church New Year –September 1st Every time we enter upon another year whether it be civil or ecclesiastical we have the opportunity to reflect upon the past and make changes for a better future. Let us ask ourselves: What practical changes can I make which will allow the Lord to act more in my life? Can I do more in my spiritual life – prayer, study, almsgiving, stewardship? Can we do more as a community – out-reach, charity, evangelism? How can I per-sonally and we collectively play a part in making this coming year better than the previous year?

The Beginning of the School Year The month of August liturgically celebrated the blessing of the fruits of the harvest on the
Feast of the Transfiguration and a blessing of flowers and herbs on the Feast of the Dor-
mition of the Theotokos. In our civic calendar the children are back or will soon be back
to school and Labour Day sadly signals Summer vacations are over. And hope that they
were enjoyable. Our liturgical year begins September 1st with the Nativity of the Blessed
Virgin Mary on September 8th and the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14th.
bringing us back from our Summer adventures to focus back into routine.
Heavenly Father, We thank you for the opportunity to begin this new
school year, and we ask that you bless Holy Family Parish , faculty, and student families that make our school a great place to learn. We pray that you will guide us in all ways, so that we will seek Your will in everything
that we do. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

At Holy Family Parish In
Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost - August 30, 2015
“Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and cast
him into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.’
For many are called, but few are chosen.” “Many are called, few are
chosen”. At first this may seem to us to be a hard saying. And yet when
we look around in this country and many other countries and see half-
empty or even totally abandoned Churches, then we can see that this is
true, for all are called to come to Church, but few choose to come and
worship Christ. Today’s Gospel reading of the marriage-feast remains as
true today as when it was first spoken. If we ask those who do not come
to Church why, they will give various answers… Some hide behind
excuses, which mean only that their faith is not a priority for them: I’m
too busy. I’m too tired. I’m seeing someone. I don’t like the other people.
I’m buying a new car. Others at least have the merit of being honest: I
have lost my faith! But whatever the reason given, ultimately there is
only one reason why people do not come to Church - because they are
ignorant of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, the Comforter, and the
Spirit of Truth. Every Sunday we are invited to a banquet, the banquet of
the Kingdom of God, the Eucharistic meal, in which we are united in a
sacramental way to the risen Christ, for our personal sanctification and
the building of the Church. That is why we start our Liturgy by saying:
“Blessed is the Kingdom of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit”. And at the Great Entrance with the gifts, the priest says: “May the
Lord God remember in his Kingdom…” And prior to receiving Holy
Communion we pray: “Remember me, O Lord, in your Kingdom!” We
can find many excuses not to come to this banquet. But if we really love
the Bride, and if we really love one another, all these excuses become
nonsense. When the priest invites the people to the Communion, he says:
“With faith and deep reverence for God, approach!” We come to the
Eucharistic banquet full of reverence, faith and love. So that, after the
Holy Communion, we can sing with joy and thankfulness: “May our
mouths be filled with your praise, O Lord, that we may sing of your
glory, for you made us worthy to partake of your holy, divine, immortal
and life-giving Mysteries. Preserve us in your holiness that we may
meditate on your righteousness all day long. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia!”
Feast of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God. The Feast of
the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, the Theotokos
and Ever-Virgin Mary is celebrated on September 8
each year.
The Feast commemorates the birth of the Mother of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Background The birth and early life of the Virgin Mary is not recorded in the Gospels or other books of the New Testament, however this information can be found in a work dating from the second century known as the Book of James or Protevangelion. According to the story found in this book, Mary’s parents, Joachim and Anna, were childless for many years. They remained faithful to God, but their prayers for a child were unanswered. One day, when Joachim came to the temple to make an offering, he was turned away by the High Priest who chastised him for his lack of children. To hide his shame, Joachim retreated to the hill country to live among the shepherds and their flocks. As Joachim was praying, his wife Anna
was praying at the same time at their house in Jerusalem. An angel appeared to both of them and announced that Anna would have a child whose name would be known throughout the world. Anna promised to offer her child as a gift to the Lord. Joachim returned home, and in due time Anna bore a daughter, Mary. Icon of the Feast The icon of the Nativity of the Thetokos presents to us the central figures of Saints Joachim and Anna, Mary’s parents, and the Mother of our Lord as an infant. Saint Anna is in the middle of the icon with her right hand extended toward her daughter. Likewise, Saint Joachim, Mary’s father, is gazing upon the young child with his right hand extended toward her. Anna is surrounded by attendants who have assisted with the birth.
The icon directs attention to Mary as the central figure in this feast. It also acknowledges the joy that was felt by Joachim and Anna as new parents with a child received through a promise from God. The liturgical texts of the feast acknowledge this joy and confirm the special role of Mary as the Mother of the Incarnate God, Jesus Christ. In this event, another step is made in sacred history in preparation for the entrance of Christ into the world. The icon and the feast also acknowledge a transition from barrenness to life. This was but another foreshadowing of what would be offered through Christ, the transformation from death to eternal life. Adapted from the article on www.goarch.org/special/listen_learn_share/vmnativity “God speaks to us in a variety of ways. He speaks to us where we are and in a way we can understand”

Commemoration of the Placing of the Holy Cincture (belt/sash) of the Most
Holy Mother of God after her Dormition and Assumption
August 31, 2015
According to the Sacred Tradition and the history of our Church, the Most Holy Theotokos three days after she fell a sleep she rose from the dead and ascended in body to the heavens. During her ascension, she gave her Holy Sash to the Apostle Thomas. Thomas, along with the rest of the holy Apostles, opened up her grave and didn’t find the body of the Theotokos. In this way the Holy Sash is proof for our Church of her Resurrection and
bodily ascension to the heavens, and, in a word, at her metastasis. The Holy Sash (Belt), according to the tradition, was made by the Blessed Virgin Mary herself with camel hair. The Empress Zoi, wife of Leo 6th the Wise, out of gratitude for her miraculous cure, embroidered the Sash with gold thread, as it is found today, but divided in three pieces. Originally it was being kept in Jerusalem and later in Constantinople. There during the 12th century under Manuel A. Komninos (1143-1180) an official holiday for the Sash was established on August 31st. In the end, Emperor John the 6th Katakouzinos (1347-1355), who had a special love toward the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi, as is evidence by many related accounts, donated the Sash to the Monastery. Since then the Holy Sash is kept at the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi, in a silver case of newer manufacture which depicts the Monastery. On the bottom right border of the depiction the artist made the drawing of the donor Emperor Katakouzinos along with a sign which refers to his donation to the Monastery. Numerous are the miracles, that have taken place up to today with the Holy Sash. Its value is priceless because it’s associated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. She has the grace and to her the miraculous power is attributed, which with many ways she transmits to the faithful. The Holy Sash maintains unaltered the grace of the Most Holy Theotokos, because it became connected with her person and her life and because saints are spirit carriers during not their life, but also after their death. The same phenomenon is mentioned in the Holy Scriptures when objects that the Prophet Elias and the holy Apostles wore actually performed miracles, because they had the grace of the saints. For this reason the Church attributes it honourary worship, as it does to the Holy Wood of the Cross of the Lord.
