2 Welcome to Holy Family Parish
EASTER MESSAGE FROM FR. TOM
Two months ago, I was reading a biography of a Missionary in Vietnam. In his trip to that country, he spent time in the
hull of a ship with non-Christian sailors. While on that ship it was mentioned that he prayed alone on Easter Sunday. At the
time I thought how sad that he could not celebrate Mass on Easter Sunday. I remember closing the book and trying to
imagine what it would be like to celebrate Easter separated from my community.
Here we are just two months later, and that is exactly what is happening. It is not just one person, but our entire Church
across the world. For the first time, the Church is celebrating Holy Week separate from each other. I have been calling this
sadness the “Long Lent”, because we are giving up more than we ever have before as a community.
Even though we are separate, even though we cannot gather for the liturgies, we are still celebrating the greatest feast of
the Liturgical year. We are celebrating Easter. Easter is when we celebrate Jesus’ victory over sin, death and Satan. This
is the holy feast of our Redemption.
At the Easter vigil, we normally begin with a special song called the Exsultet. It begins the liturgy with “Exult, let them
exult, exult, let Angel ministers of God exult. Let the trumpet of salvation sound aloud our mighty King’s triumph!” This
passage gives me great hope. As we gather on Easter with just our family or even alone, and we begin to pray, we will
know that all the heavenly host, and even creation herself, will ring out in joy and song with us. Because of the
Resurrection, the very fabric of reality has been renewed in Christ, and our Savior has burst from the tomb.
The message is the same whether we are gathered together or separate. Easter is our victory feast! However, knowing
this, I still know it is very difficult for everyone involved. I have been praying for everyone even more deeply in this time
away because I miss all of you. Gathering for prayer around the altar is the happiest thing for me. I really enjoy greeting all
of you after every Mass and then hanging around talking long after Mass has ended. I am sure that gathering with your
family for church, and talking with your neighbors and friends at Mass is also something special.
My hope is that you take advantage of being with your families on this day. Having a small intimate Easter may give you
a different perspective of what Easter is really about. I would also encourage you to spend some time on the phone calling
those who may be alone on this special day, or if you are alone, calling people whose houses may be filled with kids.
Jesus is risen from the dead, Alleluia, Alleluia! Knowing this, we will always have Hope.
