Easter 2017

Alleluia! He is Risen! The Lord is Risen Indeed!

After the long Lenten season, it is such a joy to shout out the first Alleluia on Easter morning. There is such a wonderful shift in mood and tone from Lent to Easter. We are celebrating. Off course, we are celebrating. We are proclaiming God raised Jesus from the dead!

Though it is hard, if not impossible, to be anything but joyous on Easter, Monday does follow Sunday. As we enter into our day-to-day world, seemingly far removed from the celebration of new life in the resurrection, we often slip back into “pre-resurrection” thinking. Where is that “resurrection life” when we need it?

Well, we are not alone when we slide back into the same old, same old after Easter Sunday worship. In fact, we are in good, so to speak, company. The disciples did much the same after the initial news that Jesus had been raised from the dead. In John’s Gospel, we are told they were all together (except for Thomas) locked up in a house because they were afraid. This is despite the fact that Mary Magdalene had told them she had seen and spoken with the risen Christ.

So there were the disciples, filled with fear and trying to keep a threatening and hostile world at bay and into this self made stronghold Jesus appears. John says Jesus …”came and stood among them.” As he stood there he proclaimed peace to them. He then breathed the Holy Spirit on them telling them to forgive others.

What happens in this encounter with Christ in the locked room is much like the creation account in Genesis 2:7. There, God took dust from the ground, breathed on it and the dust became a human being. In the same way, the disciples became something different after this encounter with the risen Christ.

With the breath of God in them, there is no need to be locked up and afraid. They are filled with the very presence of the risen Christ, someone who has died and has been raised from the dead. The most fearful thing—death—has been taken away. In turn, we have the new life of Christ in us. What the disciples felt on that Sunday night, we have certainly felt. We know the fear, uncertainty and anxiety which can cripple us and hold us hostage. The resurrected Christ tells us, I am with you, I love and forgive you, let my Holy Spirit fill you. Be alive and don’t be afraid.

Alleluia! He is risen!

From our Deacon, Janice Robbins

Among the many messages that come to us from Lent, is the one Jesus tells his disciples as he washes their feet on Maundy Thursday – “Love one another; serve one another.” That message is central to our Christian faith and it applies at all times and seasons and in all places.

Looking ahead to summer, it’s logical to fill the calendar with all kinds of enjoyable activities: swimming, camps, traveling, tennis/baseball games, golf matches, and swim meets. It is also a time for a more relaxed schedule, one that hopefully gives more leeway in scheduling. Now’s the time to plan what you as an individual AND you and your family can do to serve others. It’s even a time that several families can come together and act.

It is easy to get into the mode of me-me-me when we’re in the play mindset; however, summer just means a different kind of issue. People’s needs don’t take a break just because it’s warmer; they persist all year round.. Yards of the elderly or sick need to be tended; meals still are prepared and given out at the Community Kitchen; weeds still grow on the paths the Lookout Mountain Conservancy has cleared; litter still gets deposited on the sides of our roads.

Summer also provides a time that families can tackle something together. Children who serve with their families learn valuable lessons about caring for neighbors and serving our community. [see 40 Ways Kids Can Volunteer, Toddler to Teen by Laura Grace Weldon].

Start making your plans today. Perhaps, start the summer on the right path by volunteering for Family Promise, May 28—June 4.

“How wonderful that no one need wait a single moment

to improve the world.” Anne Frank

Good Shepherd School May 2017

It’s hard to believe we are rapidly approaching the end of another wonderful school year. It’s been marked with learning adventures, fun activities and awesome celebrations! As the school year winds down, there are a few things to remember. The Final Chapel Program for the Threes and Pre K classes will be held on Thursday, May 18th. The program begins at 9:30 and will be held in the Sanctuary. It is a sweet, fun program and all are invited to share in the joy of transitions and the end of another school year. The last day of school is Friday, May 26th. We close at noon.

If you haven’t heard this news already, we wanted to let you know. Due to internal scheduling conflicts, we will not be hosting the King of the Mountain Road Race this spring. We will be back next year on the Saturday before Mother’s Day and hope you will join us to walk, run or stroll to raise money for the scholarship fund of Good Shepherd School. See you in May of 2018!!

Our summer program is shaping up to be the biggest ever! If you would like to join us this summer, there are a few spots available. If you have some flexibility on days and dates and are looking for an active, engaging, fun-filled experience, call or stop by to register. The school office number is 821-0044. The summer program has 3 four-week sessions. You can sign up for one, two or three sessions. Good Shepherd Summer Program is a blast! Come Join the Fun!!

If you have a love for children and are looking for a great part-time job, maybe a pre-school teacher is a good fit for you! We are looking for some teachers to begin the last week in August. As you can imagine it’s a fun, active job that keeps you on your toes and fills your heart with joy each day. Schedules can be flexible to accommodate your needs and the needs of the children. We are also looking for a new Assistant Director. This job, more on the Administrative end of running the school takes care of the payroll, invoicing, bill paying and ordering. If you are interested in either of these positions, please call, email [email protected] or come by the office to talk about what these jobs entail. I have job descriptions and duties available for both positions. It’s going to be an exciting new school year and we need some additional staff members!!

Parish Family Day Out & Campout

Saturday May 20-21 11am-10am

Lula Lake Land Trust

Join us at Lula Lake Land Trust, Saturday May 20th, for our first ever Good Shepherd Spring Parish Family Day Out and Campout.

We have been given exclusive access to the Lula Land Trust for our parish family to use for day hiking and time together. We have also been given the extra special opportunity to camp out and wake up on Sunday morning at Lula Lake.

This event is for the entire parish. Gates will open at 11 am on Saturday May 20th. You are free to come out at any point to do some day hiking, picnicking, or just lounging in God’s good creation.

There will be two community-gathering events, at 6:30pm on Saturday night we will gather for a BBQ meal. All are welcome please RSVP for dinner. And on Sunday Morning at 8:00am we will gather for a sunrise-ish celebration of Holy Communion. You can come out for a day hike, to the BBQ on Saturday night, Eucharist on Sunday morning, or any and all between.

We are limited in the numbers of people who can camp overnight. And this is primitive camping. There is no running water and only two privies. So you will need to have camping equipment. Please RSVP for dinner and reserve your family’s camping sight by contacting Mac at [email protected]. Deadline for dinner is MAY 15. Camping is first come first serve. Make your reservation ASAP because there are only a limited number of families they are allowing to camp overnight. Rev. Mac Brown, Assistant to the Rector

IN RECOGNITION

On behalf of the Flower Guild and The Church of the Good Shepard, I would like to express our gratitude to all of you who support the Flower Guild with your generous contributions and kind comments. If we were to thank you individually, it would take months and probably include the entire church. The gifts are particularly obvious at Christmas and Easter, when we celebrate our most holy days. Without your contributions for memorials and honorariums, we could not participate in the ongoing traditions of Christians everywhere who honor these special days with abundant gifts of flowers given to the glory of God. This touching celebration at our church continues throughout the year with gifts from our members which enable us to purchase weekly altar flowers.

We are continually grateful for your support of this beautiful and meaningful tradition at Good Shepherd. The 26 members of the Flower Guild join me in thanking you for making this ministry possible in such a positive and sustaining manner.

Barbara Helton, Flower Guild

Just a Friendly Parking Reminder:

Please save the circle parking area on Sunday for those with mobility issues or with small children. Also, the Fire Marshall has asked that we keep the street area where you turn on to Franklin from Scenic clear of any vehicles, to insure that emergency vehicles can get through if needed. We appreciate your cooperation.

On Sunday, April 30th there will be a table set up in Talbird Hall with lost & found items. We have platters, plastic carriers, casserole dishes, lots of things left behind after receptions, events,

breakfasts. We also have earrings (no matches, just 1 earring) sunglasses, keys, Christmas dog collar, sunglasses, necklaces. Be sure to stop by the table to see if you have left anything behind. Also it would be a great time to return anything you might have borrowed...coffee mugs (Beige & Brown w/Turquois inside or Bright Green) or maybe a purple striped umbrella with Good Shepherd Logo on it...check your cabinets and see if maybe a coffee cup made it home your house.

Do you have a graduating Senior (from high school or college)?

We will be honoring those graduating seniors in the May/June Staff! Please call the church office

(821-1583) by May 19th so we can recognize your May graduate.
