Aug. 22-23, 201521st Sunday in Ordinary TimeIn the second reading this week, St. Paul uses the image of marriage to talk about Christ’s love and commitment to us - the church. The long version of the reading has this crucial sen-tence; “Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ.” It is not a part of our cul-ture to choose subordination, but as the other readings point out, we have a choice. Choosing to accept discipleship means choosing humil-ity and deference to one another - especially those who are poor and most vulnerable. It is not easy, but it is the way that leads to eternal life and joy!

COME AND SEE!Are you, or do you know anyone, who has not yet been baptized or was baptized in another Christian faith? Ever wondered why Catholics bless themselves with the sign of the cross, what they believe about communion, what’s up with all those saints and statues, and rosaries, and standing, sitting, and kneeling, why does Mary seem so important? Well, why not come and see and come and learn?

This year’s RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Program begins on Thursday, September 10. There is no cost, no obligation and no commitment necessary. In a series of friendly, informative and spiritually exciting classes we will explore the major things Catholics believe and why. We will learn more about the Mass and what is hap-pening and why. Learn about prayer, scripture, sacraments, and Church history, and much more.

Are you Catholic and interested in learning more about your faith? Would you be willing to be part of this program, to be part of a faith community willing to journey with and sup-port those interested in learning more about our faith? Now may be the moment that God is calling you to be part of an exciting ministry.

So, if you are currently a non-Catholic wanting to learn more about Catholicism, or a Catholic willing to be part of an exciting ministry, please call Sandy Dodson at (512) 213-4554 or Deacon John Kerrigan at (214) 886-8239. You may also email Deacon John at [email protected].

God may be calling you… Listen, pray and come and see!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION/EDUCACION RELIGIOSA: K-12 ~ YOUTH ~ ADULT RE & FAITH ENRICHMENT

RELIGIOUS ED (K-12TH GRADES)Coordinators: JoAnna Rubio & Delia Blanco

Reconciliation & First Communion Preparation - Traditionally chil-dren celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation (First Confession) and First Communion in the second grade. For their preparation, children attend Religious Education for two years (1st grade & 2nd grade). The first year is traditionally 1st grade and the second, 2nd grade, is continued preparation for the sacraments and the celebration. Older children who have not celebrated the sacraments and need to prepare participate in the RCIA for Children Program. Register for Religious Education to get your child ready to celebrate the sacraments.

Confirmation - A minimum of two years, traditionally 8th grade and 9th grade, of formal religious education in a parish precedes the Confirmation Preparation Program at Santa Cruz. Students who attend their 8th and 9th grade years will enter into the Confirmation Preparation Program in their 10th grade year. If a student did not attend 8th grade, the DRE / High School RE Coordinator will work with parents to place the child in appropriate classes. These guidelines are in accordance with the Diocese of Austin. Register for Religious Education to get your child ready to celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation.

We would like to welcome Alex Smith to our Youth Ministry Team! Come by registration to introduce yourself or join us for Youth Night on September 6th and get to know him! Below is a short bio:

Hello! My name is Alex Smith, and I am the new youth ministry coordinator here at Santa Cruz! I am 20 years old and attending Texas State University studying secondary education. I am an Eagle Scout, and have been involved in scouting even after I aged out as a boy. For the past two years I have been the Assistant Middle School Youth Direc-tor at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Leander, and a volunteer core team member for the high school/confirmation faith formation. I am involved in the TEC (Together encounter Christ) retreats for young adults hosted by the Diocese of Austin. This past year I was also on the committee for a diocesan retreat called Cross Training, a retreat for incoming 9th graders to help them prepare for high school. I am very excited to become a part of this wonderful community of faith and to continue with all of you on this journey of faith!

SANTA CRUZ CATHOLIC SCHOOL/ESCUELA CATOLICA

News from the Principal’s DeskWe have finished our first full week of

school! Students came to school on their first day excited to learn, anticipating a great year filled with new experiences and great adventures.

We have another new staff member that we welcomed into our school community. Rose Marie Zavala had joined SCCS as our new 4th grade teacher, replacing Mrs. Hinojosa who took a position with Austin ISD. Mrs. Zavala has her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in education from Texas State University, and has taught just about every early elementary grade. We are excited she has joined our staff.

Our parish Fiesta is right around the corner! Please go out and sell, sell, sell those raffle tickets. There is a great band lineup for the two days, great food, and great games. So, be sure to put September 12th and 13th on your calendar!

Have a blessed week,Mrs. Flanagan

Bendiciones,Sra. Flanagan
