HE IS RISEN! Alleluia! Easter Sunday (April 12)

Luke 24: 1-12; John 20: 1-18; Colossians 3: 1-4

EASTER, the third day of the Triduum, began with the Easter Vigil. What a celebration that was! And it didn’t really take all that long! Once again, I loved the blessing and lighting of the new fire. It was exciting hearing the bells rung during the singing of the Gloria. There were several RCIA candidates getting baptized – and confirmed! Now I can enjoy the Easter bunny!!

REFLECTION & PRAYER Today we celebrate Jesus' resurrection from the dead. It is the most important day in the year for Catholics. By rising from the dead, Jesus has shown us what we can expect. We will also rise to share in his eternal life and glory! Once again this year, congratulations on making it through Lent! You did it!

Jesus Christ is ris'n today, Alleluia! our triumphant holy day, Alleluia!

who did once upon the cross Alleluia! suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia!

Hymns of praise then let us sing Alleluia! unto Christ our heav'nly King, Alleluia!

who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia! sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia!

TODAY IS THE DAY TO BE SAVED! Ash Wednesday (February 26)

Joel 2: 12-18; 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:2; Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

Ash Wednesday! Lent already! Actually, I had such an interesting experience during last Advent that I really can’t wait to get going in preparation for Easter. I know that there is lots I don’t know, but now that I have experienced how to research, I am confident that I will learn much.

REFLECTION & PRAYER Yes, today is ASH WEDNESDAY, the beginning of the season of Lent. Today’s readings are the same as last year’s, which shows how important the ideas are. They reflect several Lenten themes which you can explore. As you discovered, there are many visible and popular Advent themes. However, there are actually more Lenten ones, just not as well publicized. If you are anxious to research, you may be busier than you think! Lord, help me to honour this day with the ashes on my forehead. They help me remember from where I have come and where I am going. May I acknowledge to you my sins and my deep need for your loving forgiveness and grace. I pray that this Lenten season will make me so much more aware of how much I need your healing in my life.

THE TOMB WAS CLOSE BY … THEY PLACED JESUS’ BODY THERE

Holy Saturday (April 11) - No day readings

My research shows that today, Holy Saturday, is supposed to be a day of mourning for Jesus who died on the Cross yesterday. Certainly, there is nothing happening in our church today. I couldn’t even plan to go to Reconciliation, as there were none scheduled as they usually are. However, I think that the quietness of this day just allows the anticipation of tomorrow to grow. Tomorrow is Easter! REFLECTION & PRAYER Holy Saturday commemorates the day that Jesus lay in the tomb after his death. Today is a day of waiting. Just as the Israelites waited for many years, we wait in silence and mourning for Jesus’ resurrection. The climax of our 40 days of waiting is tonight, at the EASTER VIGIL. Be there!

Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?

Oh … Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble;

Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?

THEN HE BOWED HIS HEAD AND DIED GOOD FRIDAY (APRIL 10) - JOHN 18:1 - 19:42

Today is GOOD FRIDAY, the second part of the Triduum. Ever wonder why it is called good if it is all about Jesus dying on the

cross? It wasn’t too hard to research. The events that occurred led to the Resurrection of Jesus on Easter and his victory over death and sin. It led to our opportunity to have eternal life. Pretty good, eh?

REFLECTION & PRAYER The liturgy celebrating the passion and death of Jesus on Good Friday is ancient. It consists today of four parts: Liturgy of the Word (including John’s account of the passion); special Prayers of the Faithful; the adoration of the Cross; the distribution of Holy Communion (hosts consecrated on Holy Thursday). There is no Mass. Rituals can vary in different locations, but it is always very interesting and emotional.

Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Oh … Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble;

Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you; Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

…YOU WILL PROSPER … THE LORD YOUR GOD WILL BLESS YOU Thursday after Ash Wednesday (February 27)

Deuteronomy 30:15-20; Luke 9:22-25

Last year, I looked at the arrival of Lent with some dread. I think this was because all I could see were the hardships it might cause me. Because my outlook is now more positive, yesterday I was excited to receive the Ashes. I hope all children who are Holy Childhood Association (HCA) members were able to experience this too either at school or in your Parish Church. Ashes: my first research project! REFLECTION & PRAYER Ashes is one of the most recognizable symbols of Lent. You should not have any difficulty finding information either on the history of Ashes or it’s meaning for us today. Receiving the ashes is important to all Catholics. Both readings today predict God’s promise to us, and the ashes remind us of this promise. Lord, it's so easy to get caught up in the day to day of my life and keep saying, "Tomorrow, I will spend more time getting ready for Lent." Help me to use the occasion of receiving the ashes to motivate me to begin my preparation seriously. Help me to rely on you for help.

SHOUT AS LOUD AS YOU CAN! Friday after Ash Wednesday (February 28)

Isaiah 58: 1-9; Matthew 9: 14-15

I discovered a few things about ashes. Apparently, ashes have been a traditional sign of penitence (sorrow) for a long time, certainly before the time of Jesus. It’s not just the ashes themselves, but people actually wearing them! To show sorrow, a person used to wear rough cloth, called sackcloth, and dusted him/herself with ashes. That’s why we wear them on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday. REFLECTION & PRAYER Do you know from where our ashes today come? Palms from the previous year are burned to become the ashes for the new season. Because the palms have already been blessed, the ashes are a special symbol. They should be treated seriously, and worn all day as a sign to the world that you are serious about your Lenten observance. Isaiah wants your actions to speak loudly! Lord, I know how much you love me. It is hard for me to get started on my Lenten plan, but I know your love is always with me and will assist me. Help me to use your trust as a way to prepare my Lenten intentions. I know with your help, my actions can speak to the wider world about your promises and love.

CELEBRATE THIS DAY … IT IS THE PASSOVER OF THE LORD—Holy Thursday (April 9)

Exodus 12: 1-14; 1 Corinth. 11:23-26; John 13:1-15

Today is HOLY THURSDAY, the first day of the Easter Triduum, I learned. It is also called Maunday Thursday, coming from the Latin word “mandatum” which means “commandment”. Of course, I already know that this Mass is

special as it remembers the Last Supper and the institution of the Eucharist. Also, I love it when we dramatize the washing of the feet. REFLECTION & PRAYER The Triduum is the term given to the three days of prayer preceding Easter. “Mandatum”. Commandment. “Love one another, as I have loved you” (John 13:34). Jesus said this dur-ing the Last Supper, as well as so many other things. Mass today celebrates so much: Eucharist, washing of the feet (service), ordi-nation, betrayal, love, fellowship, Passover, adoration. How could anybody miss it?

A new commandment I give unto you That you love one another as I have loved you.

By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, If you have love one for another.

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you;

Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

EVERY MORNING HE MAKES ME EAGER TO HEAR WHAT HE IS GOING TO TEACH ME

Wednesday of Holy Week (April 8) - Isaiah 50: 4-9; Matthew 26:14-26

I found out something I had never heard of before, and neither had my parents, teachers or friends. I wonder if our priest knows? Today, Wednesday of Holy Week, is called Spy Wednesday. This is because traditionally, this is the day Judas made the agreement to betray Jesus. There may have been a spy among the disciples! REFLECTION & PRAYER So once more, today’s gospel relates the story of Judas’ arrangements to betray Jesus. Again, there is a feeling of anxiety mixed with the expectations of hope arising from the arrangements for the Passover and the Eucharist. We need to look positively on where Holy Week is taking us, and can be inspired by the enthusiasm expressed by Isaiah in today’s reading. Lord, you invite me to share in the glory of the resurrection. Please stay with me these last few days of Lent as I struggle to maintain my resolve to prepare for your coming. Help me to be humble and accepting like your son, Jesus. I want to turn to you with the same trust he had in your love.

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you; Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

I WILL ALWAYS GUIDE YOU AND SATISFY YOU Saturday after Ash Wednesday (February 29)

Isaiah 58: 9-14; Luke 5: 27-32

So, I have already spent some time finding out about ashes. Before I get carried away with all of my research, I should make a small summary of the main things to look out for during Lent. Things like: fasting, giving things up, sacrifice, giving to the poor, prayer and Mass, Confession, Stations of the Cross. These are kind of the common things to observe in Lent. I

hope to say something about all of them – and more - in the next few weeks. REFLECTION & PRAYER

It is good to make a summary of the main things that you hope to achieve and observe during Lent. Of, course, as you will discover, there are many elements about Lent, but it is important not to lose sight of what you can do. Make a calendar, or download the one from our website, to remind you of what you can do. Make a plan! Both Isaiah and Luke suggest that you get help from God by following him. Lord, let me be aware of the many ways you reach out to help me today and let me stand in awe of your loving ways. Let me make intelligent and realistic decisions as I design my Lenten plan of sacrifice and let me increase my confidence through your trust.

SIN CAME THROUGH ONE MAN … GOD’S GRACE FREES US THROUGH JESUS CHRIST: 1st Sunday of Lent (March 1)

Gen. 2: 7-9, 16-18, 3: 1-7; Rom. 5: 12-19; Matt. 4: 1-11

I found out that the first Sunday in Lent has traditionally had a special name, not widely used in our modern Church today. It is called Quadragesima Sunday, meaning forty days before Easter. I don’t think that this is too important as far as my Lenten preparations go, but it just goes to show how much tradition there is attached to Lent. REFLECTION & PRAYER As well as tradition, this first Sunday in Lent reminds us of why Lent and the entire events of Easter had to occur: the coming of sin. All of the readings in today’s Mass from Genesis, St Paul and Matthew discuss the First Sin of Adam, called Original Sin, which we inherit. We need to remember that Jesus came to save us from this inheritance. He has set us free! Lord God, you who sacrificed your daily comforts and your life for me, help me to be faithful to my promises to you. Help me to find my way back to you. Help me to make sacrifices and resist temptation this Lent as your son Jesus did.

I CAN TRUST THE LORD TO DEFEND MY CAUSE Tuesday of Holy Week (April 7)

Isaiah 49: 1-6; John 13: 21-38

Talk about things happening in Holy Week! The anticipation felt today is not so much one of hope, as yesterday, but of fear and anxiety. John’s gospel talks about Jesus’ betrayal by Judas, a very significant event, but also very tense and one with a sense of doom. This week is a whirlwind of emotions for me! Can I get through it? REFLECTION & PRAYER Of course you can. Even though we focus on the passion of Jesus during this week, we can take comfort in the words of Isaiah who continues to urge us to trust in God. Despite the sense of impending tragedy, he puts all his trust in God and urges us to do the same. That’s how you get through it! “But you, O Lord, be not far from me; O my help, hasten to aid me. Rescue my soul from the sword, my loneliness from the grip of the dog. Save me from the lion's mouth; from the horns of the wild bulls, my wretched life.” (Psalm 21:13-22)

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you; Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

HERE IS MY SERVANT, WHOM I STRENGTHEN Monday of Holy Week (April 6)

Isaiah 42: 1-7; John 12: 1-11

Again this year, the Palm Sunday celebrations at our church yesterday were great. I loved the procession, the music put me in the proper mood, the church was full. I loved the smell of the incense around the whole church. I got a sense of expectation. Things must have been happening in the original Holy Week. The authorities were planning to kill Jesus, and Jesus himself was preparing himself and his disciples for the great event. REFLECTION & PRAYER Yes, things were happening. Isaiah announces Jesus as a servant. In John’s gospel, Jesus attends a function and through

his attitude toward Mary, Martha, Lazarus and all of the guests he is subtly preparing them for their roles after his departure. Today is a day of anticipation – are you prepared? “You have been my guide since I was first formed, my security at my mother's breast. To you I was

committed at birth, from my mother's womb you are my God. Be not far from me, for I am in distress; be near, for I have no one to help me”. (Psalm 21: 1-12)

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you; Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

COME YOU WHO ARE BLESSED OF MY FATHER Monday after the First Sunday of Lent (March 2)

Leviticus 19: 11-18; Matthew 25: 31-46

The first thing I needed to research was the length of Lent: 40 days. It turns out that forty wasn’t chosen at random. Traditionally, 40 represented a period of trial or testing. It symbolized a period of time to judge behavior. It

represented the time for a new generation of people to arise. So, Lent is a time for us today to prepare for Easter through our actions and the way we live our lives. REFLECTION & PRAYER The number 40 appears several times in the Bible. God flooded the earth by having it rain for 40 days and nights. Moses was on Mount Sinai for 40 days and nights receiving the commandments. The Israelites wandered for 40 years in the desert. Moses sent spies, for 40 days, to investigate the Promised Land. Jesus was tempted by the devil in the desert for 40 days. He appeared to his disciples for 40 days after his resurrection from the dead. These are only a few.

Loving God, forty days is a long time for me. Give me the confidence to make the right decisions as I make my sacrificial resolutions this Lent. Help me to appreciate the significance of that period of time to reinforce my worthiness to make my journey to you this Lent.

YOUR FATHER KNOWS WHAT YOU NEED Tuesday after the first Sunday of Lent (March 3)

Isaiah 55: 10-11; Matt 6:7-15

The number 40, as I found out, is in the Bible 98 times! I then found out that because that number was so significant in the Bible, it has become special generally. Even people who know nothing about Lent realise that 40 is no ordinary number. Now to research the colour purple! REFLECTION & PRAYER You are correct. Ever heard these expressions: life begins at forty; forty winks; ruby wedding anniversary (forty years); Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves; the forty hour work week? Your research has proven that the forty day period of Lent was a timeline carefully selected for us. In today’s reading from Matthew, Jesus teaches us to pray the Our Father. He himself prayed for 40 days in the desert. How special the number forty is! Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD Palm (Passion) Sunday (April 5)

Matthew 21: 1-11; Philippians 2: 6-11; Matthew 26:14-27

“I can’t wait to go to Mass. Holy Week starts today, PALM SUNDAY. I want to see the procession, which traditionally re-enacts the entry of

Jesus into Jerusalem and get the palms, which have traditionally represented peace and victory, sing the special hymns and listen to the Gospel readings. Should be great!”

REFLECTION & PRAYER Today is actually the 6th Sunday of Lent, and Easter is only one week away! But it is PALM SUNDAY. Today, we celebrate Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem, ultimately to suffer and die for us. That is why the day is also called Passion Sunday. It is a day to renew our resolutions for the week to come. Make sure that you receive your palms, and participate in the procession, just as Jesus did.

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts;

Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord;

Hosanna in the highest!

SO FROM THAT DAY ON THEY MADE PLANS TO PUT HIM TO DEATH Saturday after the 5th Sunday of Lent (April 4)

John 11:45-57

I thought that mentioning the Cross would be easy. Turns out that there are actually different types of crosses, and that there is more symbolism than I actually thought. We use what is called the Latin Cross. There are more, too many to mention, but you can easily look them up. And speaking of crosses – Holy Week starts tomorrow! REFLECTION & PRAYER Yes, there are many cross designs, and they all have special meaning. We use the Latin Cross. The taller vertical section represents our relationship and reaching out to God. The horizontal section represents Jesus stretching out his arms to humanity, and represents our relationship with others. Yes, Holy Week starts tomorrow and the Cross will have special importance. Lord, by your cross and Resurrection, you have set us free. You are the Saviour of the world.

SOMETHING GREATER THAN JONAH IS HERE Wednesday after the 1st Sunday of Lent (March 4)

Jonah 3: 1-10; Luke 11: 29-32

After ashes, the most visible sign of Lent in my Parish for me has been the colour purple. It is the dominant “household” colour in our Church. After exploring this colour a bit, I found that purple has been used historically as a symbolic colour for mourning. We even used in during Advent: mourning our failures as we prepared for Christmas.

REFLECTION & PRAYER Yes, the colour purple has often been associated with mourning, sometimes referring to death. Today’s readings include the story of Jonah, who spent time mourning over the people of Nineveh after God spared them because of his personal anger with God. Purple has become a fixture in Church rituals. Certainly, during our Lenten preparations, we mourn the passion and death of Jesus. Lord Jesus, I know you receive what is in my heart. Let me be inspired by your words and by the mourning of Jonah, your great prophet. Guide me to make sacrifices this Lent in the spirit of self-denial and with greater attention to you and to those around me.

FOR EVERYONE WHO ASKS WILL RECEIVE, AND ANYONE WHO SEEKS WILL FIND …

Thursday after the 1st Sunday of Lent (March 5) Matt. 7: 7-12

Speaking of the colour purple in our Church, I have noticed the following: the priest often wears purple vestments, the altar has some purple coverings, the lectern has purple cloth hangings, the book of the Word has a purple cover and crucifixes and statues are covered in purple shrouds. It looks noticeably different! The question I now have is: why cover everything? REFLECTION & PRAYER Purple has many other significances, all of which can be found online. However, for Catholics, seeing all of the purple “decorations” in the Church serves to remind us not only of mourning for Jesus passion, but of our Lenten preparations and promises that we have made. In today’s reading from Matthew, Jesus says to “ask” and we will receive. The purple colours remind us to ask God for help with our Lenten practices. Lord, I am not always eager to do your will. I would often

much rather do my own. It’s too easy to slip back into my old ways and forget about my Lenten resolutions. Please allow me to be inspired by all of the purple reminders so that I can be faithful to my Lenten intentions.

YOU, LORD, ARE ON MY SIDE Friday after the 5th Sunday of Lent (April 3)

Jeremiah 20: 10-13; John 10: 31-42

“Well, it’s Friday again. I will go to the Stations of the Cross again tonight. Which reminds me … I haven’t mentioned at all one of the most obvious symbols of Lent, and of the Catholic Church itself. The Cross! Obviously, without any research, everyone knows that the cross has symbolism to Jesus’ death. They do know that, don’t they? Maybe I shouldn’t be so sure … REFLECTION & PRAYER The cross is the best known symbol of Christianity, and represents the crucifixion of Jesus. Did you know that there is a difference between a cross and a crucifix? The latter has a figure of Jesus body on it, whereas a cross does not. The cross has become a symbol of Jesus as well as the Christian people. What was once a sign of fear and death is now a sign of hope and life. This is the wood of the cross On which hung the Saviour of the world. Come, let us worship.

I MAKE THIS COVENANT WITH YOU Thursday after the 5th Sunday of Lent (April 2)

Genesis 17:3-9; John 8: 51-59

I have also found out that preparing a plan for Lenten preparation for Easter is like making a promise to God. The word covenant keeps coming up in my research. A covenant is like a deal, setting down conditions. People sign deals in business every day. It makes much more sense than just random acts done here

and there, which is what most of my friends do in Lent. REFLECTION & PRAYER Today’s reading from Genesis brings us back to the covenant between Abraham and God. God promised that Abraham would be the father of the a great nation. Your Lenten preparations, including giving up what is difficult and volunteering your time, lead you closer to the covenant that he made with us through Jesus. That promise means eternal life, which Jesus reveals on Easter. Lord, I’d often much rather do my own will. Please be with me on this Lenten journey and help me to remember my covenant with you, that your own spirit can guide me in the right direction. With a grateful heart, I acknowledge your love and know that without you, I can do nothing.

COME AND OFFER YOUR GIFT Friday after the 1st Sunday of Lent (March 6)

Matthew 5: 20-26

Don’t you think that at a time when we are praying hard and looking to Jesus and all the saints for inspiration and help during Lent, that the crosses and statues would remain uncovered? Wouldn’t it be easier to pray to them if I could actually see them? Instead of complaining, which I used to do, I looked it up. As usual there are explanations for everything… REFLECTION & PRAYER Covering the crucifix is an old tradition inspired by John 8: 59, when Jesus “hid” himself from the people who were angry with him. The covering is removed on Good Friday. There are a few reasons for veiling the statues. It shows that something is different – Lent! It encourages you to focus on Mass, and, as

Matthew says today, not be distracted. It encourages you to focus only on Lent, and not on other matters of faith. It allows for anticipation for their removal on Easter – a build up of excitement!

Lord, help me to see your love in the passion, death and resurrection of your son. Help me to observe Lent in a way that allows me to celebrate that love without distraction. Prepare me for this season of Lent as I feel both deep sorrow for my sins and your undying love for me.

Holy Childhood Association— Canada YOU MUST BE PERFECT, AS YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER IS PERFECT: Saturday after the 1st week of Lent (March 7)

Deuteronomy 26: 16-19; Matthew 5: 43-48

Guess what? I found another meaning or use of the colour purple. In ancient times, purple had ties to kings and queens,

and was often reserved for only high caste people. The Persian king Cyrus and Roman emperors wore purple royal uniforms. In the Byzantine Empire, rulers wore purple robes and signed edicts in purple ink. Apparently,

for many years, purple dye was rare, and thus reserved for royalty. How does this connect with Jesus? REFLECTION & PRAYER When Jesus was led away to be crucified, he was clothed in a purple robe (Mark 15:17; John 19:2). This piece of clothing is a mocking symbol of Jesus sovereignty and royalty. On Good Friday, the purple shroud is removed, revealing our crucified King who will rise on Easter. At the Easter Vigil, before the Mass actually begins, the veils are taken off all of the statues, as our King is revealed. As Matthew says today, we now must be perfect as our heavenly father is perfect. Lord, please help me to turn my heart toward you, to gaze upon you in trust and to seek your kingdom with all of my heart. Grant me this with the ever-present guidance of your spirit, because on the cross you gave us the ultimate example of love for enemies.

I CAME FROM GOD AND NOW I AM HERE Wednesday after the 5th Sunday of Lent (April 1)

John 8: 31-42

The idea of giving things up for Lent is pretty old, and didn’t take much research to discover. But giving up sometimes seems so negative. “Don’t do that!” I have found some sources on the internet that suggest a more positive way of “giving up”. Instead of not doing or taking something away, do something! Do something good. Do something beneficial! REFLECTION & PRAYER Thinking about Lenten sacrifice in a positive way is a great idea. You spoke earlier about giving up time. You can use your time to do something different that helps people: volunteer at your parish, volunteer in an aged facility, organize fund raising activities in your class or school, join a youth group or activity club, become a leader in that organization. Be proactive with people, as was Jesus in today’s Gospel! Lord, let me be inspired by your words and by the actions of your son, Jesus. Guide me to make positive sacrifices this Lent and get involved in the spirit of self-denial and a willingness to help others. Help me to stick to my Lenten plan, which includes giving up things I want, during this time of preparation.

I TELL THE WORLD ONLY WHAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM THE FATHER Tuesday after the 5th Sunday of Lent (March 31)

John 8: 21-30

I already know the best way for me to give alms this Lent. We have a Holy Childhood Association (HCA) here at our school. It has already organized some fund raising activities for Lent, ending next week in Holy Week. It will benefit needy children. I need to be very involved in this. Do you belong to the HCA at your school? REFLECTION & PRAYER Helping your school raise money for children in missionary countries through donations to the HCA would be an excellent project. Today, Jesus reminds us that he came from the Father and he is always partial to help for children. In addition to supporting the HCA, your family can support local food banks and the St Vincent de Paul Society in your parish. Jesus, throughout your life, you continually strove to spread the message of love and mercy. You were a true missionary, and encouraged us to be the same. Help us to continue to understand the needs of children around the world who are less fortunate than ourselves. Help us to become aware of how we can be missionaries in our daily lives. Encourage us to pray, to become informed and to give what we can for the sake of these children. (HCA Mission Prayer)

BE NOT AFRAID 2ND Sunday of Lent (March 8)

Genesis 12: 1-4; 2 Timothy 1: 8b-10; Matthew 17: 1-9

So, Sunday again. I have heard from some of my friends that Sundays are not really part of Lent. And guess what? If there are 40 days in Lent, a glance at the calendar tells me that there are 46 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. Is my math wrong? REFLECTION & PRAYER Your math is not wrong. Traditionally, Sundays have always been special days – “feast days” – the Lord’s days as mentioned in the Ten Commandments. Feast days are not considered to be days of fasting, which has led to the custom of not counting Sundays as part of the days of Lent. However, local customs vary, and you can certainly keep up your Lenten promises on Sundays if you wish. Today we remember the Transfiguration – certainly reason to celebrate! Lord, let me recognize the fullness of your love which will fill my life. Give me the confidence to persevere and succeed as I continue to learn about the customs and traditions associated with my Lenten observance .

WE HAVE TURNED AWAY Monday after the 2nd Sunday of Lent (March 9)

Daniel 9: 3-10; Luke 6:36-38

I think that I have now sorted out some of the basic visible things about Lent: ashes, 40 days, purple. I have realised that there is a lot of tradition behind it. However, I keep hearing the words “Come back”, both in prayers and in some of the hymns at Church. I need some help on this one, because I don’t think I have been anywhere!

REFLECTION & PRAYER Remember last Sunday, the 1st Sunday in Lent? The main theme in the readings at Mass was the arrival of sin in the world. To repeat, this is called Original Sin, and unfortunately, we all inherit the consequences. Today, Daniel writes about how we have turned away from God. Jesus came to set us free from this sin. He invites us to come back from it. He wants us to return to him. Lord, help me to let go of my pride, and return to you in my penance. I want only to return to you sincerely in this season of Lent. I ask this through your son, Jesus, who stands before me welcoming me back always.

I DO NOT CONDEMN YOU Monday after the 5th Sunday of Lent (March 30)

John 8: 1 - 11

“Now that Lent is into the last couple of weeks, I need to think about some other important features. One of these was traditionally called “almsgiving”. The meaning is simple: giving to the poor and needy. Jesus teaches us to do this always, but it has had a special role in Lent. Why? REFLECTION & PRAYER Almsgiving actually involves the two other major aspects of Lent. By giving to the poor, you are also giving to God, and therefore communicating and praying to him. Also, if you give away something important, you are sacrificing and “giving up”. By donating to the needy, you fulfill two Lenten sacrifices at once. In today’s reading from John, Jesus gives forgiveness and truth, because the woman was poor in her heart, and therefore needy. Lord, help me to be willing to share with those in need the things that I have. I want to be generous in a practical way that benefits others but also allows me to feel that I have sacrificed something for you.

I WILL PUT MY BREATH IN THEM, BRING THEM BACK TO LIFE 5th Sunday of Lent (March 29)

Ezekiel 37: 12-14; Romans 8: 8-11; John 11:1-45

Well, I really found some interesting stuff when researching the 5th Sunday of Lent. A long time ago, it was called Judica Sunday, after the first words of the entrance antiphon Judica me, Deus (Judge me, O God).. It also used to be called Passion Sunday, although this name was moved to

Palm Sunday in 1969. Confusing? You bet! It’s easier for me to look on today as one of the Sundays in Lent leading up to Easter! REFLECTION & PRAYER Many changes to the liturgy occurred after the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s, as you are beginning to discover. Years ago, Ezekiel predicted that God would raise us to life. Today, St Paul writes that God’s Spirit will raise us to life. Today’s Gospel from John is about Jesus raising Lazarus back to life. We are really being prepared for the coming of Jesus’ Resurrection, and our opportunity for life.

Vindicate me, my God, and plead my cause against an unfaithful nation.

Rescue me from those who are deceitful and wicked. You are God, my stronghold.

Send me your light and your faithful care; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy mountain,

to the place where you dwell. (Ps. 87)

THOSE WHO HUMBLE THEMSELVES WILL BE EXALTED Tuesday after the 2nd Sunday of Lent (March 10)

Isaiah 1: 10-31; Matthew 23: 1-12

I am starting to understand the way it works. Much of what I see and hear during Lent represents something. So, I am not physically returning from anywhere. It is my attitude and actions that show where I am. The many symbols help my understanding. I’m really starting to get it! REFLECTION & PRAYER Today’s readings reinforce the whole idea of returning, coming back. Isaiah directly accuses the people of acting in a sinful way, and implies that they need to change. In Matthew, Jesus talks about coming back through our actions which need to reflect humility and sincerity. God in heaven and in my life, guide me and protect me. Lead me with your love away from harm and guide me on the right path that returns me to you. May your Spirit inspire me and make me an instrument of your love and guidance.

WHOEVER WANTS TO BE FIRST MUST BE YOUR SLAVE Wednesday after the 2nd Sunday of Lent (March 11)

Matthew 20: 17-28

Of course one of the main ways to “come back” to Jesus is through one of the central themes of Lent: repentance. To repent is to acknowledge that we have done wrong things , say we are sorry and resolve not to do them again. I have learned through my research that Jesus continually urged people to repent and is always willing to forgive. REFLECTION & PRAYER Yes, repentance is one of the main Lenten themes. Matthew indicates how we need to be able to act as a slave and be humble enough to repent of our wrongs. This is one of the main ways in which we can “Come Back to Him”. But, do you actually know how to repent? Lord, please let me surrender my pride, and humble myself to repent of my wrongdoings. Help me that with your love and your grace, I might be less and less absorbed with myself, and more full of the desire to come back to you. thepassionists.org

I HAVE PLACED MY CAUSE IN YOUR HANDS Saturday after the 4th Sunday of Lent (March 28)

Jeremiah 11: 18-20; John 7: 40-53

When researching Lenten traditions, one of the oldest and most significant activities, along with fasting, was prayer. At first, I thought that this was easy. Afterall, we always talk about prayer and seem to be doing it anyway. But are we really? Is our prayer meaningful, or just a habit done without thought? REFLECTION & PRAYER By praying, as Jeremiah writes, we are putting ourselves in God’s hands. There are many ways to pray, but the one thing that makes any prayer successful is the thought that goes into it. We have to be sincere and be distracted by nothing else. Our minds and hearts need to have only one focus. Wherever or however you pray, we must give it 100% of our attention. Think it’s easy?

Lord, renew me: bring me to new life through my prayer life. Make me feel whole again. Help me to see your love in the different ways that I try to pray to you. Help me to

observe Lent in the spirit of meaningful prayer.

LET US LIE IN WAIT FOR THE RIGHTEOUS Friday after the 4th Sunday of Lent (March 27)

Wisdom 2: 12-22; John 7:25-30

Some common things for young people to give up during Lent have been: types of food, candies and sweets, bad habits, TV shows, soft drinks and pop, social media, You Tube (or equivalent), movies, computer games. Adults have included smoking, alcohol, coffee. It all sounds kind of ordinary. REFLECTION & PRAYER Why not make it extraordinary by adding some special challenges? As Solomon says, we can make wise choices and then wait for God with assurance. For example, give up time. Spend your free time helping more around the house, doing some extra homework and study, helping some neighbours, especially elderly and needy people, visiting an aged care facility and cheering up the older people. Say extra prayers. Go to Mass during the week. Loving God, I come before you trying very hard to make my Lenten sacrifices meaningful and not just token reactions to make me appear sincere. Help me to become creative so that I may give my time to others in an important way.

BLESSED IS THE ONE WHO TRUSTS IN THE LORD Thursday after the 2nd Sunday of Lent (March 12)

Jeremiah 17: 5-10; Luke 16:19-31

I actually do know how to truly repent. I learned this earlier when researching things for Advent. I know that God is merciful, and as I wrote previously, always willing to forgive. I learned that Jesus will forgive minor faults if we pray and ask him. However, I am also aware that the best way to be forgiven is through the sacrament of Reconciliation. REFLECTION & PRAYER You are correct. Today, Jeremiah writes about trusting in the Lord. Repentance involves trust. The story of the poor man Lazarus from Luke demonstrates the humility involved in the true meaning of repentance. While it is relatively easy to ask for forgiveness through prayer, it takes trust, courage and humility to take the effort to go to Confession, or Reconciliation. This sacrament is central to Lenten practice. Loving God, I hear your invitation, "Come back to me" and I am

filled with such a longing to return to you. Show me the way

to return. Show me the way to repent of the wrong things that

I have done. I believe that this is the only way back.

IT IS MARVELLOUS IN OUR EYES Friday after the 2nd Sunday of Lent (March 13)

Genesis 37: 4-28; Matthew 21: 33-46;

I used to be scared to go to Reconciliation. I mean, who is comfortable telling a complete stranger things you have done wrong? Even worse, what if you actually know the priest? However, I am now actually more at ease going, and even feel quite good after being there. I highly recommend it! REFLECTION & PRAYER In Matthew’s story about the tenants today, Jesus puts difficult demands on the disciples in order to be reconciled to God. The Church asks us to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation at least once a year. Is this a difficult demand? Today, Reconciliation is less about only “confessing” than making up with God. It makes sense to do this during Lent, when we are preparing so hard for Jesus’ Resurrection. As you said, it makes you feel good and it’s actually pretty easy! Lord Jesus, please accept my small acts of sacrifice today. As I journey through Lent, let me remember the life you have prepared for me and let me be filled with thanks to you. Help me to reconcile with all of my friends and family during this time.

REMEMBER THE SOLEMN PROMISE YOU MADE Thursday after the 4th Sunday of Lent (March 26)

Exodus 32: 7-14; John 5:31-47

So, by fasting and abstaining from meat on certain days, we are in fact “giving up” food. However, I think that this whole idea about giving up has been a bit of a joke in the last few years. Yes traditionally, it seemed to have meant something between a person and God, but nowadays I think people either give up in a token sort of way, or just make fun of it. At least, that’s what I see around me. I mean, give up school? Ridiculous! REFLECTION & PRAYER Giving up something has to be a sacrifice. It has to hurt. It has to be hard. It has to be something you really don’t want to be without. It needs to turn your mind and heart toward the suffering of Jesus. If it doesn’t do this, what kind of preparation are you making? Isaiah reminds us that God made a solemn promise to us. Our giving up should be just as sincere. We need to give an example to those who don’t take it seriously. Merciful Father, I hope that sacrifices I make this Lent are sincere and can help me to overcome my doubts and lack of resolve. Help me to persevere throughout the remainder of Lent in a way that allows me to feel the hardship. I have promised to follow through with my plan. Help me to do so.

Holy Childhood Association— Canada A YOUNG WOMAN WILL HAVE A SON AND WILL NAME HIM “Immanuel”

Wednesday after the 4th Sunday of Lent (March 25) Isaiah 7: 10-14; Luke 1: 26-38

Today is the Feast of the Annunciation, so it is time again to pause for a minute from our normal Lenten research. We know how important Mary is to the entire Easter season. This is the anniversary of Mary’s decision to say “yes” to God. I found out that this is one of the oldest feast days in the Church. We need to take her example and be true to our Lenten resolutions. REFLECTION & PRAYER Yes, the Annunciation has been celebrated at least since the 4th Century, making it very old and traditional. The occasion has also been called the Feast of the Incarnation, when Jesus was conceived in the womb of Mary. This is so significant that Pope John Paul II established March 25 as the International Day of the Unborn Child, for its commemoration of the conception of Jesus.

V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary, R. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary, etc... V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord.

R. Be it done unto me according to Your Word. V. And the Word was made flesh,

R. And dwelt among us. V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Pour forth, we beseech You, O Lord, Your Grace into our hearts; that as we have known the incarnation of Christ,

THIS BROTHER OF YOURS WAS DEAD, AND IS ALIVE AGAIN Saturday after the 2nd Sunday of Lent (March 14)

Luke 15: 11-32

Saturday has traditionally been the day when you could go to Confession, or Reconciliation, in most churches. However, in

Lent there is usually the opportunity to go more often. There may even be a chance to go at school: the priests in our parish come over for a few hours for kids who have made their first confession. I went the other day. Might even go up to our church this morning.

REFLECTION & PRAYER It is fitting that today, Saturday, when Reconciliation is available, that the reading from St Luke is the most famous story about repentance and forgiveness that there is: the (Prodigal) Lost Son. There are many human questions that arise from this story, questions about our ideas of justice and fairness. None of that matters to God, whose forgiveness is total and mercy unlimited. It foretells his forgiveness on the cross.

Lord, you showed us the ultimate example of forgiveness while suffering on the Cross. It was the same mercy shown in the story of the Lost Son. When I look at this unselfish act of love, it is very difficult to excuse myself from any reluctance to go to Reconciliation.

WE HAVE BEEN JUSTIFIED THROUGH FAITH 3rd Sunday of Lent (March 15)

Exodus 17: 3-7; Romans 5; 1-8; John 4:5-42

I discovered that the third Sunday in Lent used to be called Oculi Sunday. This Sunday gets its name from the first few words of the traditional Latin entrance antiphon, called the Introit, for the Mass of the day, which says: "My eyes are always on the Lord." Impressed? I know that the name is not used generally today, but it sure shows how much tradition Lent has. REFLECTION & PRAYER That name you researched for the Third Sunday fits well with what we should be doing during Lent. St Paul writes about the importance of faith, and it is faith that allows us to observe Sunday and Lent in a special way, the same faith demonstrated by the woman at the well. By keeping our eyes on the Lord, we are maintaining our faith and our commitment to our Lenten resolutions.. Loving Father, your mercy and love give me confidence. Strengthen my faith so that I may fulfill my Lenten promises. Let me be inspired by the faith of the Samaritan woman at the well, whom Jesus forgave because of her faith.

MY FATHER IS ALWAYS WORKING, AND I TOO MUST WORK Tuesday after the 4th Sunday of Lent (March 24)

Ezekiel 47: 1-12; John 5: 1-16

Probably the most well-known tradition that we have about Lent is that of giving things up. Of course, I have put this on my plan. My research shows that “giving up” falls into the category of fasting, one of the big components of Lenten observance. I think, however, that the practice of “giving up” needs more exploration. REFLECTION & PRAYER Strictly speaking, fasting refers to eating habits. Fasting has traditionally meant having one full meal, and two small snacks on a particular day. Closely related is the practice of abstinence, when meat is not eaten on Fridays during Lent, or on Ash Wednesday. As you mentioned, this is related to giving things up, which requires determination and self-discipline. St. John hints at this today, referring to Jesus’ determination to work. Lord, help me to grow this Lent with an awareness of the gifts

you place in my life. Give me the courage to ask for help and to persevere with my Lenten promises. I especially need your help with fasting and giving up things, because it is not always easy.

I AM MAKING A NEW EARTH AND NEW HEAVENS Monday after the 4th Sunday of Lent (March 23)

Isaiah 65: 17-21; John 4:43-54

While researching the Stations of the Cross, I found out that Stations are not only in churches. They have been set up outside in some important shrines and people can literally walk around on a journey like Jesus did when carrying the cross.

REFLECTION & PRAYER You have discovered something that few people realise. There are many outdoor Stations in Canada. A few are at: the Martyrs’ Shrine, Midland Ontario; Note Dame du Cap, Trois Rivieres, Quebec; Ste Anne de Beaupre, Quebec; Mary Lake, King City, Ontario; Radium Hot Springs, BC. There are more, as well as many around the world. Isaiah writes about the new heaven and earth. Praying the Stations can help lead us there.

THERE IS NO GOD IN ALL THE WORLD EXCEPT IN ISRAEL Monday after the 3rd Sunday of Lent (March 16)

2 Kings 5:1-15; Luke 4: 24-30

The more I discover, the more questions I find. I know that when I go to confession, the priest gives me some penance. I know that this is supposed to be my visible sign of my willingness to be forgiven. But it is so easy! Say couple of Our Fathers? Say some Hail Marys? Sometimes, not even that! Why so easy? REFLECTION & PRAYER The penance given by the priest is the public atonement in the presence of the one God (book of Kings, today’s reading) for our sins. God always forgives, but we need to show the community that we accept his forgiveness. That is the role of the penance we receive. In “olden days”, penance was more like punishment, and could be harsh and difficult. Today, it is more “symbolic” than before, but nevertheless significant. After all, prayers can be easy, but are they sincere?

FORGIVE YOUR BROTHER OR SISTER FROM YOUR HEART Tuesday after the 3rd Sunday of Lent (March 17)

Matthew 18:21-35

Once again, Lent has been “interrupted” by the celebration of the Feast of St Patrick. I have begun to understand that some communities do this more than others, and often there is not really much religious significance to what happens. It is more of a cultural thing for some, or an excuse to have a party. Maybe

that’s OK. Still thinking about that. REFLECTION & PRAYER Yes, it is St Patrick’s Day, and maybe having this special day right in the middle of Lent is not such a bad thing. Lent is long, and if you are seriously preparing for Easter and fulfilling your promises, a day with a different perspective and fun can be inspiration to continue with Lent in an optimistic way. Today’s reading from Matthew about forgiveness is therefore not out of place. REJOICE, O JERUSALEM 4th Sunday of Lent Sunday of Lent (March 22)

2 Corinthians 5:17-21; John 9: 1-41

I discovered that the fourth Sunday in Lent used to be called Laetare Sunday. Traditionally, this Sunday has been a day of celebration, within the somber period of Lent. Lent is halfway over! This Sunday also gets its name from the first few words of the traditional Latin entrance antiphon, called the Introit: "Laetare Jerusalem" ("Rejoice, O Jerusalem"). Wow, so many old customs! REFLECTION & PRAYER That name you researched for the Fourth Sunday fits well with what you discovered about Sundays being special days. Today is like Gaudete Sunday in Advent. Even in our own culture, Sundays have always been special for families: special family meals, get-togethers, social gatherings, recreation times. Today’s readings are about vision and the light of Christ: celebration words.

Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad for her, all you who love her; rejoice greatly with her,

I WANT YOUR CONSTANT LOVE Saturday after the 3rd Sunday of Lent (March 21)

Hosea 5:15 – 6-6; Luke 18: 9-14

So I went to the Stations last night at our church. I think it was done the way churches traditionally do it in Canada: a procession around the Church, from one station to the next; a short description of the station was read; a prayer was read at each; a verse from the hymn Stabat Mater was sung at the end of each station. Simple, but very low key. Meaningful and relaxing. REFLECTION & PRAYER Your attendance last night demonstrates what Hosea asks of us today: constant demonstrations of love. All Catholic churches have artistic representations of the Stations mounted somewhere on the interior walls. Do you know where they are in your Church? Did you know that the HCA has missionary Stations of the Cross? Download them from the HCA site, and use them in your home, school or parish.

Reconciliation, Confession, sorry, penance, courage. The Sacrament of Reconciliation really all comes down to being forgiven for sins. Right? I guess I have spent so much time thinking about it because I have learned that the Sacrament is really the most perfect way to be forgiven. REFLECTION & PRAYER Both readings today are about God’s laws and the need to obey them. This is why the Sacrament of Reconciliation is so important, especially in Lent. We are all called to forgive as Jesus did, and to show mercy. We have been shown the perfect way to be forgiven. It should be a special part of our plan for Lent. Lord, guide me to make sacrifices this Lent so that I may pay attention to observing the laws that you have given to us. I didn’t know that! I think that is a special privilege for our country! REFLECTION & PRAYER You are correct again. St. Joseph, along with St. Anne, is our patron saint. He was chosen as the patron saint of Canada by the first Recollect Franciscan missionaries in 1624. Pope Urban VIII confirmed him as Canada’s patron in 1637. As you know, Joseph was a member of the Holy Family, an example to all of us in Canada today. I think I will try to start focusing on some of the traditional practices or things I can do to prepare during this Lent – things that should be in my plan. I will try to continue to focus on tradition. Today is Friday. Jesus died on a Friday – Good Friday. Traditionally, Stations of the Cross are prayed on Fridays during Lent. REFLECTION & PRAYER Today, Hosea reminds us that we have fallen, just as Jesus did while carrying his cross. We need to get up and continue. As you said, Friday is the day when Stations of the Cross are special. They are prayerful reconstructions of the road Jesus took to Calvary on Good Friday. Most of you have experienced them in the past. They are especially relevant during Lent. At the Cross her station keeping Stood the mournful Mother weeping, Close to Jesus to the last.
