¶Introit Holy is the True Light, and passing wonderful, lending radiance to them that endured in the heat of the conflict. From Christ they inherit a home of unfading splendour, wherein they rejoice with gladness evermore. Alleluia!

Music: William Henry Harris (1883-1973) Words from the Salisbury Diurnal by G. H. Palmer

¶Opening Hymn – Sung by all

1. Royal Charles, who chose to die Rather than the Faith deny, Forfeiting his kingly pride For the sake of Jesu's Bride; Lovingly his praise we sing, England's martyr, England's King.

3. All the way of death he trod For the glory of his God, And his dying dignity Made a bright Epiphany; Lovingly his praise we sing England's martyr, England's King.

2. Mirror fair of courtesy, Flower of wedded chastity, Humble follower day by day, Of the Church's holy way; Lovingly his praise we sing, England's martyr, England's King.

4. Bless we God the Three in One, For all faithful 'neath the sun, For the faithful gone before, And for those our country bore, Chiefly him whose praise we sing, England's martyr, England's King.

¶The Prayers of Preparation Please Kneel

Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil.

All Amen.

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

¶The Ten Commandments

God spake these words and said: I am the Lord thy God; thou shalt have none other gods but me. Choir: Lord, have mercy upon us:

and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven image, nor the likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, or in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down to them, nor worship them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, and visit the sins of the fathers upon the children

unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, and shew mercy unto thousands in them that love me and keep my commandments.

Choir: Lord, have mercy upon us:

and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Choir: Lord, have mercy upon us:

and incline our hearts to keep this law. .

Remember that thou keep holy the Sabbath day. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all that thou hast to do; but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God. In it thou shalt do no manner of work, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, thy manservant, and thy maidservant, thy cattle, and the stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it.

Choir: Lord, have mercy upon us:

and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Honour thy father and thy mother; that thy days may be long in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

Choir: Lord, have mercy upon us:

and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Thou shalt do no murder.

Choir: Lord, have mercy upon us: and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Thou shalt not commit adultery. Choir: Lord, have mercy upon us:

and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Thou shalt not steal.

Choir: Lord, have mercy upon us: and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Choir: Lord, have mercy upon us:

and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his servant, nor his maid, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is his.

Choir: Lord, have mercy upon us:

and incline our hearts to keep this law.

¶The Collects

Almighty God, whose kingdom is everlasting, and power infinite: Have mercy upon the whole Church; and so rule the heart of thy chosen servant ELIZABETH, our Queen and Governor, that she (knowing whose minister she is) may above all things seek thy honour and glory; and that we, and all her subjects (duly considering whose authority she hath) may faithfully serve, honour, and humbly obey her, in thee, and for thee, according to thy blessed Word and ordinance; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with thee and the Holy Ghost liveth and reigneth, ever one God, world without end.

All Amen. Blessed Lord, in whose sight the death of thy saints is

precious; We magnify thy Name for thine abundant grace bestowed upon our martyred Sovereign; by which he was enabled so cheerfully to follow the steps of his blessed Master and Saviour, in a constant meek suffering of all barbarous indignities, and at the last resisting unto blood; and even then according to the same pattern, praying for his murderers. Let his memory, O Lord, be ever blessed among us; that we may follow the example of his courage and constancy, his meekness and patience, and great charity. And grant, that this our land may be freed from the vengeance of his righteous blood, and thy mercy glorified in the forgiveness of our sins; and all for Jesus Christ his sake, our only Mediator and Advocate.

All Amen.

Please Sit

¶The Epistle

Dearly beloved : Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake : whether it be to the king, as supreme ; or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him, for the punishment of evil doers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well-doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men : as free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Honour all men : Love the brotherhood : Fear God : Honour the king. Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. For what glory is it, if when ye be buffeted for your faults ye shall take it patiently? but if when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently ; this is acceptable with God. For even hereunto were ye called : because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps ; who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth.

1 Peter 2:13-end

¶Gradual Hymn – Sung by all

1. O holy King, whose severed head The Martyr's Crown doth ray With gems for every blood-drop shed, Saint Charles! for England pray.

2. For England's Church, for England's realm (Once thine in earthly sway,) Lest storms our Ark should overwhelm, Saint Charles of England, pray!

3. Thou for thy murderers didst plead That January day; O still, in this our hour of need, Saint Charles! for England pray.

4. Let us with him whose Crown is won, Meet adoration pay To God the Father, God the Son, And Paraclete always. Amen.

¶The Gospel The Holy Gospel is written in the 21st chapter of the Gospel

according to Saint Matthew, beginning at the 33rd verse. All Glory be to thee, O Lord.

Hear another parable: There was a certain householder which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a wine-press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country. And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other servants, more than the first: and they did unto them likewise. But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying: They will reverence my son. But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves: This is the heir, come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. When the Lord therefore of the vine yard cometh, what will he do unto those husband men? They say unto him: He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise be to thee, O Christ.

¶Offertory Hymn – Sung by all

1. Who are these like stars appearing, These before God's throne who stand? Each a golden crown is wearing; Who are all this glorious band? Alleluia! hark, they sing, Praising loud their heavenly King.

3. These are they who have contended For their Saviour's honor long, Wrestling on till life was ended, Following not the sinful throng; These, who well the fight sustained, Triumph through the Lamb have gained.

2. Who are these of dazzling brightness, These in God's own truth arrayed, Clad in robes of purest whiteness, Robes whose lustre ne'er shall fade, Ne'er be touched by time's rude hand? Whence come all this glorious band?

4 These are they whose hearts were riven, Sore with woe and anguish tried, Who in prayer full oft have striven With the God they glorified; Now, their painful conflict o'er, God has bid them weep no more.

5. These like priests have watched and waited, Offering up to Christ their will; Soul and body consecrated, Day and night to serve him still: Now in God's most holy place Blest they stand before His face.

6 Lo, the Lamb Himself now feeds them On Mount Zion's pastures fair; From His central throne He leads them By the living fountains there; Lamb and Shephe rd, Good Supreme, Free He gives the cooling stream.

¶Prayer for the Church After the bidding ’Let us pray for the whole state of Christ’s Church Militant here on earth’, Please Kneel. The Priest prays the Prayer of Intercession to which all respond: Amen. The Priest then invites the people to confess their sins, kneeling:

All Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Priest pronounces the Absolution to which all respond: Amen. He continues with the Comfortable Words and the Sursum Corda:

Hear what comfortable words our Saviour Christ saith unto all that truly turn to him: Come unto me, all that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you.

So God loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Hear what Saint Paul saith: This is a true saying, and worthy of all men to be received, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

Hear also what Saint John saith: If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the propitiation for our sins.

The Congregation remains kneeling.

The Lord be with you All and with thy spirit.

Lift up your hearts. All We lift them up unto the Lord.

Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. All It is meet and right so to do. The Celebrant continues with the Preface which leads into the Sanctus: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are

full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most High. Amen.

WE do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy: Grant us therefore,

gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us.

All Amen.

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the Cross for our redemption; who made there (by his one oblation of himself once offered) a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death, until his coming again: Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ's holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood: who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took Bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat; this is my Body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me. Likewise after supper he took the Cup; and, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of this; for this is my Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.

All Amen.

The Agnus Dei, which is sung by the choir, follows immediately:

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.

¶The Distribution of Holy Communion Please come forward to kneel (or stand if you are unable). The Church of England welcomes communicant members of all Churches who have been baptized with water in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, to receive Holy Communion in faith, hope and charity. If you would like to receive a blessing, please fold your arms when approached or carry your order of service with you. If you would like to make enquiries about baptism or confirmation, or preparation to receive communion, please contact one of the clergy. Meanwhile, the choir sing the following anthem:

Harris Bring us, O Lord (1959) Bring us, o Lord God, at our last awakening into the house and gate of Heaven, to enter into that gate and dwell in that house, where there shall be no darkness nor dazzling, but one equal light; no noise nor silence, but one equal music; no fears or hopes, but one equal possession; no ends or beginnings, but one equal eternity, in the habitations of thy glory and dominion, world without end.

John Donne (1572–1631)

Following the conclusion of the Anthem, a period of silence follows after which the Clergy approach the altar to lead the congregation in saying the Lord’s Prayer:

Please Kneel All Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name.

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

The Celebrant prays the Prayer of Oblation to which the congregation respond: Amen.

¶Recessional Hymn – Sung by all

For all the saints, who from their labours rest, Who Thee by faith before the world confessed, Thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed: Alleluya! Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress and their Might; Thou, Lord, their Captain in the well fought fight; Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light. Alleluya! O may Thy soldiers, faithful, true and bold, Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, And win with them the victor’s crown of gold. Alleluya!

For Martyrs, who with rapture kindled eye, Saw the bright crown descending from the sky, And seeing, grasped it, Thee we glorify. Alleluya! O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; Yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine. Alleluya! And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, Steals on the ear the distant triumph song, And hearts are brave, again, and arms are strong. Alleluya! The golden evening brightens in the west; Soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest; Sweet is the calm of paradise the blessed. Alleluya! But lo! There breaks a yet more glorious day; The saints triumphant rise in bright array; The King of glory passes on His way. Alleluya! From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast, Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, Singing to Father, Son and Holy Ghost: Alleluya!
