NOIR NIGHT OUT OUT OF THE PAST

7:30 PM, SATURDAY, MARCH 12 DOORS OPEN 7 PM

$12 GENERAL ADMISSION

$10 HOLLYWOOD MEMBERS We love film noir, we love chili, and we love beer—so we’re combining all three in our first Noir Night Out!

Grab a bowl of chili—meat or veggie versions—made from scratch using Robert Mitchum’s own “Chili Wonder” recipe (the secret is just a hint of choc-olate). Pair it with a nice craft noir beer (stout or dark ale), and choose your favorite seat to catch the quintessential film noir title Out of the Past (1947), starring Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer, and Kirk Douglas. This film made con-tract player Robert Mitchum a star and set the standard for the genre for years to come. In fact, In 1991, Out of the Past was added to the United States Na-tional Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” (Drama/1947/NR/97 min)

Ticket includes chili and two com-plimentary drink tickets. For those who don’t imbibe, choose one of our locally-made Red Ribbon sodas instead. Movie-only tickets are also available.

WAYNO PRESENTS THEORY OF OBSCURITY:

A FILM ABOUT THE RESIDENTS 7 PM SATURDAY, MARCH 5

WITH ADDITIONAL SCREENINGS

As part of our Guest Programmer Series, the Hollywood Theater in Dormont is pleased to team up with cartoonist, illustrator, writer, and musician Wayno to present Theory of Obscurity, the new documentary about the iconic renegade cult band, The Residents. From the group’s formation in Shreveport to their success in the burgeoning San Francisco avant-garde music scene of the ‘60s and ‘70s, The Residents redefined what a rock band could be. With the advent of music videos in the 1980s, these masked musi-cians gained global fame as MTV darlings and serious art world figures.

Wayno is the creator of the comic panel WaynoVision, and his humorous illustra-tions have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Nickelodeon Magazine, and many others. He is a member of the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators, and serves as President of the National Cartoonists Society’s Pitts-burgh Chapter. His rumored association with the enigmatic Bushmiller Society has never been definitively confirmed. As a longtime fan and collector of many types of music, both mainstream and fringe, Wayno is pleased to present the Pitts-burgh premiere of Theory of Obscurity: A Film About the Residents. (Documentary/2015/NR/87 min)

LOS PUNKS OPENS MARCH 25

Punk rock is thriving in the backyards of South Cen-tral and East Los Angeles. A cobbled-together fam-ily of Hispanic teens and young adults comprise the scene: bands, fans, produc-tion, marketing, and security interwoven into a sub-culture of thrash and noise and pits. The sense of belonging is palpable; emotional bonds fostered among good families and those broken, poverty and wealth, adolescence and maturity, with the music ema-nating a magnetic chorus for all to sing together. PSYCHO-PASS: THE MOVIE7:30 PM, TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY, MARCH 15 AND 16One of the most popular sci-fi anime series in the past five years is making its way to the big screen. Possessing an animation and production budget only possible with a feature film, Psycho-Pass: The Movie will blow away movie-goers with its explosive action sequences and thought-provoking storytelling. This film is a must-see for fans of the TV series and fans of sci-fi action films like Akira, Blade Runner, and Minority Report.

In this culmination of the two-season Psycho-Pass TV series, Inspector Tsunemori is sent to a neighboring war-torn nation, where the Sibyl System is being introduced as an experiment, to find Shinya Kogami, her former enforcer who went rogue three years ago. (Anime/NR/2016/127 min)

CREATIVE CONTROLOPENS FRIDAY, MARCH 18 The setting is New York, five minutes in the future. The glorious technological advances and communication devices of the near future meant to increase connectivity and allevi-ate boredom are only increasing the anxiety level of the insecure New Yorkers who’ve inherited them. David (writer/director Benjamin Dickinson) is an overworked, tech-addled advertising executive developing a high-profile marketing campaign for a new generation of Augmented Reality glasses. Feeling stuck in his relationship with yoga teacher Juliette (Nora Zehetner, IFC’s Maron), he envies the charmed life of his best friend, fashion photog-rapher Wim (Dan Gill, The Wedding Ringer) and his entrancing girlfriend Sophie (Alexia Ras-mussen, California Solo)—so he uses the glasses to develop a life-like avatar of her. Unwit-tingly, fantasy and reality begin to blur. As passions escalate and things get increasingly out of hand, the friends are forced to deal with the impending collision between their public, private and imaginary lives. This sharp, dark send-up of present-day tech culture made a big splash when it debuted at SXSW last year. The acclaim eventually attracted Amazon, which bought the rights to the film late last year. (Drama/R/2016/97 min)

SPECIAL ENGAGEMENTS

CABIN FEVER: REMAKE

10 PM, SATURDAY, MARCH 5 One show only: it’s the new 2016 reboot of Eli Roth’s classic aughts horror film Cabin Fever.

Eli Roth directed and co-wrote the original, and returned as an executive producer under helmer Travis Zariwny (Scavengers). This time around it’s a group of five teenagers who rent a cabin in the woods on spring break and attract the attention of homicidal locals after the aggressive virus takes hold of them. We’ll have to wait and see if the remake is just as bloody, but there seem to be more infected canines this time around.

The cast includes Gage Golightly, Matthew Daddario, Nadine Crocker, Dustin Ingram, Samuel Davis, Randy Schulman, and Louise Linton.

Roth called the remake “a really fun movie,” during an interview last March. “I saw the cut and thought that what Travis did was so smart—he kept the original script, but he changed the deaths, so all the kills are different. You don’t know how they’re going to come.” (Comedy, Horror/2016/NR/99 min)

It looks awesome;it’s a really fun movie. —Eli Roth

KIZUMONOGATARI PART 1:

TEKKETSU-HEN 7:30 PM, TUESDAY, MARCH 1

One fateful evening, second year high school student Koyomi Araragi has a shocking meeting with Kiss-shot Acerola-orion Heart-under-blade, the “King of Apparitions.” She was blindingly beautiful, yet chillingly terrify-ing. Written by Nisioisin, Kizumonogatari is to be adapted into a trilogy: Tekketsu, Nekketsu, and Reiketsu. Brought to you by the renowned direc-tor Akiyuki Shimbou and studio Shaft, the creators of the Monogatari series and Puella Magi Madoka Magica, this is the origin of the “story of apparitions” depicted in BakeMo-nogatari. In Japanese with English subtitles. (Anime/2016/UnRated/60 min)

NEW RESTORATION!!

CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT

7:30 PM, WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY, MARCH 2 AND 3

(PITTSBURGH EXCLUSIVE)

Long unavailable on home video formats due to legal tussles, a near-pristine 35mm print of Chimes at Midnight was found tucked among tens of thousands of pounds of film elements owned by Distribpix Inc.’s Steven Morowitz.

In this memorable adaptation of Shake-speare’s Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2—directed by and starring Orson Welles—the friend-ship between the rogue Falstaff and the wild Prince Hal is fated to end when the young man gives up his dissolute life and assumes the throne of England. It also stars John Gielgud and Jeanne Moreau.

Initially dismissed by most film critics, Chimes at Midnight is now regarded as one of Welles’ highest achievements; Welles himself called it his best work. Christan Science Monitor calls the Chimes ar Midnight “quite likely the greatest Shakespearean film ever” and the film was included among the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, edited by Steven Schneider. (Drama-Comedy/NR/1965/115 min)

The film is a near-masterpiece.

—Pauline Kael

SILENTS PLEASE HÄXAN: WITCHCRAFT THROUGH THE AGES 3 pm, Sunday, March 20

The Hollywood Theater’s series of silent movie classics paired with live music. Häxan is a 1922 Swedish-Danish silent film written and directed by Benjamin Christensen. Based partly on Christensen’s study of the Malleus Maleficarum, a 15th-century German guide for inquisitors, Häxan is a study of how superstition and the misunderstanding of diseases and mental illness could lead to the hysteria of the witch-hunts. The film was made as a documentary but contains dramatized se-quences that are comparable to horror films. (Horror/1922/NR/87 min)

With live musical accompa-niment by Richard Nicol of Pittsburgh Modular Synthesiz-ers and Steve Rightnour of Monorocket.
