Inside this issue:
A collision happened on February
14, 2016 with a Google car and a
bus from Silicon Valley city of
Mountain view. A potato camera
on the bus caught the accident. The
Google car, a Lexus, hit the side of
the bus, cracking the windshield
and damaging the body; it isn’t
normal for Google cars to have a
crash, but recently they are
occurring more frequently.
In fact, the last crash recorded
besides the latest, was a couple
years ago. The damage that
happened to the Lexus
resulted in the tear of the
front left side of the
fender, a flattened tire and
a ripped off radar, Google
had installed. In the end,
all the people on the bus
were okay, and the
Google Lexus had to be
towed with a Google
employee behind the wheel for
emergency.

The first bombing on Brus-
sels, Belgium occurred on
March 22, 2016 at their
local metro station in
Maelbeek, and was
followed by another at the
Brussels International Air-
port. These deadly attack
are responsible for the lives
of thirty-one people and
270 people discovered
injured. Some people are
still missing. The attack
was so horrific that workers
are still going through
debris and finding people
buried under the debris.
So far, one of the two peo-
ple responsible for the Met-
ro station bombing have
been found. Khalid El
Bakraoui was identified
later that day. On Thurs-
day, there was evidence
showing that there is sus-
pected to be a second per-
son involved in the bomb-
ing. Whether the 2nd sus-
pect is dead or alive police
and security footage is still
looking for this suspect.
Three additional people
apparently were connected
to the bombing at the
International airport. The
suicide bomber was Ibra-
him El Bakraoui, who is
Khalid El Bakraoui’s
brother. The second perpe-
trator was an ISIS bomb
maker Najim Laachraoui;
he also died at the airport.
The final suspect is alive,
and security photos have a
very blurry image of this
person, said to be on the
run.
A tragic situation affecting
many internationally. We
keep the victims in deepest
thoughts.

Flint Water Crisis
By Eurusalem Gebire
The lawsuit filed Monday, is the
latest in a series of such claims
filed over the discovery of high
lead levels in the city of Flint,
Michigan’s water supply. Close to
twenty defendants-seven families-
stating that their children have been
victims of maladies ranging from
neurological disorders, like
seizures, to language and learning
disabilities. They claimed that
these are due to “high levels of
copper in blood streams, brains,
bones and other organs.” The
asserted misconduct led to
“physical and psychological
injured, learning and other perma-
nent disabilities, weight loss, stunt-
ed growth, headaches, abnormal
and other pains, mental anguish,
emotional distress, and the cost of
medical, educational and rehabili-
tation expenses of training
expenses, other expenses of
assistance, loss of income and
capacity property damage,
damage of water services lines,
and devaluation of water services
property damages,” the suits lists.
The plaintiffs are seeking an
unspecified amount due to these
injuries that were the result of the
city switching its water source
from Lake Huron to the polluted
Flint River to save money. The
water ended up deteriorating also
Virginia Tech water quality. These
problems are very serious and
actions will be taken.
Is The War Soon To
Be Over? By Leah Nepo
Russia has begun to pull out of
Syria, in hopes of stopping the
five year civil war with a political
agreement between the people
and the president. Russia has been
withdrawing their forces, slowly
but progressively, from Syria
since March 8th. "They've done a
great job and they will continue in
fighting terrorism, but there are
some tasks which have been
completed, and therefore the
Russian and Syrian leadership
agreed that it is appropriate now
to withdraw some of the planes or
forces,” the Syrian president
informed CNN. Russia supports
the Syrian president for economic
reasons, although the president
has started a bloody war that has
little chance of ending any time
soon, until now. In a phone call,
Putin and Assad (leaders of
Russia and Syria) decided that
what they have done has really
helped but their jobs have been
successfully completed. Could
this mean the war will be over
soon? If so, who will be the
victor?
Crashing Into the Interstate
By Leah Nepo
Around 100 vehicles were
involved in a car crash on I-40 on
March 13th, shutting down the
interstate for hours. Around 25
people were taken to a hospital.
The first wreck happened at 5:45
p.m., according to police. There
was a total of nine accidents in
Alamance County, and 94
vehicles. The causes of all these
accidents are unknown although
there were strong storms passing
through the area. Multiple injuries
were recorded and all of these
wrecks resulted in six miles of
gridlock. Long hours of traffic
with some intense storms were
dubbed “a travel nightmare.”
Remember to always wear a seat-
belt and continue to never text and
drive for they are the leading
causes of fatal car crashes every
day.

It was the math equation that
stumped mathematicians for
centuries. Until British professor,
Andrew Wiles, a Royal Society
Research Professor at the
University of Oxford, set his mind
to it. xn+ yn = zn , was the problem
that made geniuses believe that ‘n’
equals a whole number, but in
reality, ‘n’ is greater than two.
Andrew Wiles solved the difficult
problem in the 1990’s, and this
week he was officially honored the
hugely prestigious 2016 Abel
prize, including $700,000 dollars to
top it off.
Ray Tomlinson Dies @ 74 Years Old
By Leah Nepo
Emails. If you don’t use them, you surely have heard
of them. Emails give you an easy way to
communicate with some friends and family members
from across the world. They’re easy to access and
have been around for years. Very few people though,
when talking about email think about, Ray Tomlinson,
the creator of this electronic mail concept.
The email was created in 1971 and may be older than
some of your parents! Tomlinson, a graduate from
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and MIT and was, at
the time, working for a Boston technology firm in ’71,
when the idea hit him. Tomlinson also allowed the
‘@’ sign to be used more frequently. It was already a
symbol before, but wasn’t used often.
The idea of emailing back and forth quickly caught
on. "I see email being used, by and large, exactly the
way I envisioned. In particular, it's not strictly a work
tool or strictly a personal thing,” Tomlinson stated. He
was even inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2012.
Tomlinson died March 5th, 2016 at the age of 74,
from a sudden heart attack.
Radiation in Japan By Roselyn Velasco Badillo
After the tsunami and the earthquake that occurred in
2011 which shook Japan for six minutes and damaged
a nuclear power plant in Fukishima, 18,500 people
died. Most others have fled because of the radiation
that is overflowing. A total of 100,000 people have not
returned to their homes since then, and the clean-up
will take at least forty years. Later that year, Japan was
flooded with a nuclear protest. A nuclear plant can
cause many deaths from cancer globally, so the
citizens were not happy about its affects. Infants are
at most risk of all types of cancer, since their immune
system is very weak, being young. The nuclear
discharge coolant water in the sea is affecting the
seafood, a major part of their diet, and they should not
eat it without being tested for radiation levels.
Currently, recovery
from such a
detrimental natural
disaster is underway
to their ghost city.

March Madness
By Giovanni Vazquez
March Madness began in 1939 when the University
of Oregon beat the Ohio State Buckeyes 43 to 33.
College basketball became very popular by 2005. In
the first 12 years, only eight teams were invited to
play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA) tournament. In 2001, the NCAA tournament
expanded to include 65 teams playing. The most
successful team at the tournaments has been UCLA
Bruins taking home 11 championships. The first
women’s league was in 1982 with 32 teams starting
and expanded to 64 teams before 1994. Tennessee is
the first team with six championships in the women’s
basketball
league. Pat
Summit was the
coach from
1973 to 2006.
Intel’s Action 360 Cams!
By John Duncan
Yeah, you know what I’m talking about. When, Zack
Lavine hit the crazy dunk to win the contest. Believe
it or not, technology has made it better. Intel started
out roughly with their sports technology. It began
with their real sense technology. It helped out with
where they are now, but without the company FreeD
they wouldn’t have been able to accomplish it.
The company can freeze the scene from any spot and
move it around 360 degrees. This gives viewers a
whole new perspective of their favorite player making
that winning shot. Some people made the observation
that it is like the ‘Bullet Time’ effect used in the
movie Matrix. Everyone is trying to get on board the
Intel train as its gaining popularity. You may ask,
how does this work? Intel supplied CPU’s and servers
for the tech, hooked up to 28 ultra-high-definition
cameras to create a 3D render. Pretty cool, isn’t it?
Intel claims that this is just the first step. We can’t
wait to see more.
On Saturday, March 12,
2016, in Charlottesville
the UNC Tar Heels won
the ACC tournament
against the Virginia
Cavaliers. The score of
the games was 67 to 57.
Joel Berry of UNC
scored 19 points as
Virginia was held under
37 percent shooting. The
ACC title is UNC’s first
since 2008. North
Carolina defeated
Virginia straight up,
which is a promising sign
for the NCAA tourna-
ment. Even after losing to
North Carolina, Virginia
should not fall further
than #1 seed in the
upcoming NCAA
Tournament.

First, we are introduced to Ocarina
of Time 3D, then comes Wind
Waker HD, Majora’s Mask 3D, and
finally, it is here! Twilight Princess
comes to the Wii U in an HD
remake! Many memorable games
have been remastered in beautiful
HD, and Twilight Princess finally
makes its way into the line-up.
If you preordered this game at
GameStop, you could get the
game’s sound track with every
single song included on a disc. A
bundle has also been made that
comes with the Wolf Link amiibo
that I briefly talked about in last
month’s article. This figure unlocks
a new dungeon in the game called
the Cave of Shadows that can only
be played as Wolf Link. But you
may be asking, what does that
mean? There are Twilight Zones in
the game, and when you enter them
you are turned into a wolf. The only
way to turn back to your human
form? You must collect Tears of
Light from defeated bug-like
creatures. Once collected, you are
human again! So, in the Cave of
Shadows, Link must be his wolf
form to defeat waves of enemies.
The cave acts like a Twilight Zone.
Every stage you complete, you get
lower and lower into the cave until
you get the prize. But what is the
prize? You will have to figure that
out yourself. I’m sure you would
like to find out about the main
story. The main goal is to defeat
Ganondorf to restore the world of
Hyrule to its former glory. You
collect items along the way and
defeat dungeon by dungeon. There
are nine dungeons within the game.
The main dungeons include the
Forest Temple, Goron Mines,
Lakebed Temple, Arbiter’s
Grounds, Snowpeak Ruins, The
Temple of Time, City in the Sky,
Palace of Twilight, and Hyrule
Castle. So many to keep up with!
Are you in need of more action?
Well, there is a mini-dungeon locat-
ed in the game! The Cave of
Ordeals, along with the mentioned
Cave of Shadows. That is eleven
dungeons! And if you want even
more action after you defeat
Ganondorf and save Hyrule almost
single handedly, there are many
side quests to complete. These
include rewards being either rupees,
which is the currency in the game,
bigger quivers for your arrows,
wallet upgrades, and more!
However, the game is fairly easy to
beat, if you are a Zelda master.
Challenging puzzles, unique bosses
and mini-bosses and a vast world
are all included in this game, an
adventure not to be forgotten.

Apple and FBI
By Logan Bonacum
On December 2, 2015, 14 people
were killed and 22 were seriously
injured in a terrorist attack in San
Bernardino, CA. Timothy Cook, the
chief executive of Apple, released a
letter to customers several hours after
a California judge ordered the
company to unlock an iPhone used
by one of the shooters involved in the
attack in San Bernardino.
On February 9, 2016, the FBI
announced that it was unable to un-
lock one of the mobile phones, they
had previously recovered. If Apple
were to get the code off, it would ap-
ply to all iPhones and unlock all of
them. Apple cannot only unlock one
of the iPhones without
affecting others, and
angering many loyal
customers.
Temple Run is a very successful
smartphone game that was a huge
craze in 2013. Temple Run is an
app that had characters escape
from monsters and other mythical
creatures at a fast pace with
sudden obstacles. Maddie Messer
is a 13-year-old, Temple Run’s
target audience, who was playing
the very popular game when she
noticed something.
Where are all the female avatars?
Sure, there were some, but all of
them cost money. The default and
free characters were all male.
Messer believed the fact that she
had to pay to play as a girl was
sexist. Why were male avatars the
only free ones? What message did
this send to young girls and boys
playing the game?
Messer began searching. After
downloading several games and
using up storage, she discovered
that 85 percent of smartphone
apps-for free-only offered boy
characters as default. She had to
do something about it. Messer
turned her information into
articles and submitted them to
different newspapers.
“I knew nothing would change
unless we heard about the
problem,” she said. So, you can
imagine her delight when, The
Washington Post, published her
article.
Later that day, Temple Run’s
creators contacted Messer. They
acknowledged and apologized for
the issue at hand and the sexism
involved. The creators of Temple
Run notified her that changes will
be made. They were. Thanks to,
Maddie Messer, we can now play
as a female, and without cost.
A is for Alphabet By Evan Brown
Google is a search engine that over
1.17 billion people use every day.
Now the question is, who is the
owner? Alphabet, Inc. is the parent
company of Google. Similarly,
Google owns YouTube, so
Alphabet owns YouTube. When
referring to Google, you don’t say
Alphabet. Although, Google is an
older company, Alphabet is still the
parent company. Alphabet did not
become a company until 2015, and
they recently surpassed Apple as
the most valuable company they
own.

Memes first entered the internet in 2013 and took over
the internet ever since. Memes are one of the many
trending things on the internet these days. There is
many memes, for example, Sanik, Shrek, Mario,
Thomas The Dank Engine, and Eddy Wally. Sonic
The Hedgehog is the protagonist of the Sonic The
Hedgehog games, Sanik on the other hand is the
protagonist of Green Trill Zone. Sanik is a character
that’s based off of Sonic but more to look like a kids
drawing of Sonic The Hedgehog. So in the past years,
Sanik The Hotdoge has invaded the internet and gets
in the way of Sonic The
Hedgehog and has ruined
Sonic’s career. Shrek is a
character made by
DreamWorks Studios for the
animated movie, Shrek. The
internet has made Shrek a
meme and ruined his career
just like Sanik. Now the internet likes to replace the
word over, with “ogre”. For example, the internet likes
to say, “Your time here, is OGRE.” The internet
replaces over with “ogre” because Shrek’s species is
an ogre. Peppa Pig is a character
for the animated cartoon, Peppa
Pig. Like before, the internet
took Peppa and made her a
meme. Peppa is part of the MLG (Major League
Gaming) clan and is known for “ogre” reacting to little
stuff like dropping a bucket of sand. When Peppa
“ogre” reacts, air horns usually come out of nowhere
and random guys start screaming out random stuff.
Mario.cdi is known for fixing toasters and telling
people to get off of his clouds. This version of Mario
comes from a game on the CDI called Hotel Mario
which was released in April 5, 1994. The game got a
5.4/10 but people only liked the
game for its terrible cut scenes
that were fun to watch “ogre”
and “ogre” again. The cut scenes
have been remade into some
really weird MLG parody which
are also fun the watch. So memes
have basically took over the
internet and you can’t go anywhere without seeing a
meme or two in the shadows.

Snapchat is an app that started hitting app stores in
late 2012 and has been the most popular among teens
since. This app, with the icon of a ghost, enables users
to take funny photos and selfies that only last 1-10
seconds, depending on how long the timer is set.
People even have their own ‘stories’ where they can
post pictures or videos to throughout the day that will
periodically disappear after 24 hours from when they
were uploaded. The new update has really set this app
above all. If you press on your face in your front-
facing camera, you receive a variety of different
objects or people to transform your face. You can be-
come a puppy, a bunny, or take a more scary side and
use the witches and vampires.
A fan favorite is definitely the face-swap filter where
you can switch faces with the person to your right on
the front screen. Not only, will you make your friends
laugh, even you will chuckle after seeing your face
become a unicorn spewing out rainbows.

11 Tips To Become a
Straight “A” Student!
By: Olivia Friend
School can be tough, so if you’re
struggling this is for you! Here are 10
tips, to keep yourself on your game at
school!

certain number of minutes, and then
take a break

As you walk down any of the sixth
grade hallways at Holly Ridge Middle
School, you may notice handmade masks
with paragraphs above them. Believe it
or not, these masks actually symbolize
being an ‘upstander’. Each student
describes an experience he or she
witnessed as an upstander. The lesson
is clear and extremely important. If you
see someone being bullied, you should
act as a upstander, and take action in
ways that won't harm you or anybody
else. Collectively, hornet sixth graders
are taking steps in preventing bullying
from happening, and seventh and eighth
graders could benefit from this activity
also. They don't have to put masks on
their lockers, but they can certainly be an
upstander and a role model, not just
around our school, but everywhere.

just panic? Well, on March
9th you can panic all you
want because it is National
Panic Day! National Panic
Day can be taken in two
different ways. Some people
believe this day is made to relax or leave all the panic
behind for a day. Others believe this day is made for
everything to get done, such as any housework or

very known, but it is considered a National holiday!
The definition of panic reads “sudden uncontrollable
fear or anxiety, often causing wildly unthinking be-
havior.”
This holiday is up to you; you can panic all day or
just leave panic in the past!
Time to Spring Forward By Olivia Friend
On March 13th, Daylight Saving time (DLS) begins at 2 am. In March we set our
clocks forward 1 hour, we remember this as Spring forward. On November 6th, we
set our clocks back 1 hours, we remember this as Fall back. But do people actually
know where and why Daylight Saving time originated. Here is a timeline of Daylight
Saving Time.
1784- The idea of DLS is first conceived by Ben Franklin
1914-1918 – Britain decides to use DLS during World War 1
1945-1966- There was not a federal law to be on Daylight Saving time
1974-1975- Congress extends DLS to save energy during the energy crisis
1986-2006- Daylight saving time begins on the first Sunday in April and ends on the last Sunday in October
August 8th, 2005- DLS is changed to the 2nd Sunday in March and 1st Sunday in November

Every Easter, most families do little traditions like
ham at dinner or family gets together. But the thing
that people do most on Easter is an Easter egg hunt.
An Easter egg hunt is when the Easter bunny goes and
hides eggs with candy or money inside. Then the next
morning little kids wake up and go find the hidden
Easter eggs. A lot of families do Easter egg hunts
because it’s fun for the kids. Easter egg hunt is a
tradition that originated with pagan spring festivals
that celebrated fertility. Like many pagan traditions,
Christians intertwined the practice with religious
beliefs.

St. Patrick’s Day
By Julia Kearney
Watch out for leprechauns! Every year on March 17th
we celebrate a special, lucky holiday. St. Patrick’s
Day is coming up, and there are tons of great tradi-
tions that people participate in to celebrate the Irish
holiday.
The holiday began in Ireland, when Saint Patrick
brought Christianity to the Irish people. The holiday
has evolved much from that though, and it’s now an
international celebration to celebrate Irish culture.
Lots of people come out to
watch parades, learn Irish dances, and eat Irish foods.
There are over 100 million Irish people who celebrate
St. Patrick’s Day and attend the parades, featured in
every state in the US and at least one on every
continent, except Antarctica.
Without leaving your house, cooking an elaborate
meal, or learning how to bust Irish moves, there are
lots of other ways to celebrate. Wearing green,
looking for leprechauns, putting up shamrocks, or
wishing others good luck are great, simple ways to
celebrate. Dressing in green is probably the most
popular tradition. Some people like to pinch others
who aren’t wearing green. It’d be quite lucky for
people not wearing green to not get pinched!
Since this Irish holiday is almost here, get some
friends and have a good time. Spending time with
friends is another main focus. Spending time with
your loved ones, going out, and getting a few drinks is
common on this day. So get some friends, set up
leprechaun traps, grab some green, and spread good
cheer on the luckiest holiday of the year.

What’s With All the Eggs?
By Leah Nepo
Easter is an eggs-cellent holiday where you can hunt
for some plastic eggs to retrieve a sweet reward and
look for the mysterious Easter Bunny. But, do you
know where this fun holiday comes from? This
holiday is specifically celebrated by Christians; it’s a
holiday dedicated towards the resurrection of Jesus
Christ from the dead. The week before Easter is
considered Holy Week, but all the exciting stuff
happens on that Sunday. Easter isn’t always on the
same date though, you can count on it being on a
Sunday. In New Orleans, the creative and preppy
traditions go all the back to the 1700’s. Traditions
such as, Easter egg Hunts which originally started as
a spring festival tradition, and also dying your eggs a
nice pastel color-which began as a Mesopotamian
tradition. Whether you decide to partake in this day or
not, you have to agree…Peeps are delicious!

Interviewing Mr. Mac
By Logan Bonacum
Mr. McArdle, also known as Mr. Mac, is retiring at
the end of this year. Before teaching at the Ridge, he
graduated from N.C. State in 1997, at the top in his
class. He taught at East Garner Middle School and in
1998 until Holly Ridge Middle opened. When asked
how he would describe himself with some adjectives.
He replied with, “Persistent, Giving, Self-Disciplined,
and curious.”
While he isn’t, teaching, he likes to ride motorcycles,
garden, read, travel, and shop. Retirement is
something everybody will have to experience and
having plans after may be difficult for some. Not for
Mr. Mac. His plans include, but are not limited to,
“Continuing to travel, going back to college for fun,
playing pool, painting, and doing stuff that I currently
can’t because of time.” Mr. Mac has actually been to
many countries before such as, China, France, Britain,
Russia, Scandinavia, Poland, Italy, Greece, Turkey,
and many more. The countries he has not been to are
South America,
Antarctica,
Australia, and
some parts of
Africa, but
we’re sure he’ll
get to those
soon enough.
On top of that,
Mr. Mac runs the Character Leadership Council Club,
CLC. When questioned about this club, he responded
positively. “Students here at school need to take
ownership for making HRMS the best it can be. CLC
students have done that.”
Did you know that Mr. Mac likes the Yankees and
Phillies? He also likes the movie, Laurence of Arabia.
His favorite author is Clive Hussler.
Mr. McArdle is a very intelligent man and it was an
honor to interview him and be taught by him daily.
He’ll be missed dearly!
Wax Museum
By Emma von Koch
On March 8th, the 8th grade wax
museum was held. The gym was
filled with parents and kids. The 8th
graders were told to research a
famous person in history, create a
board about him/her, and make a
costume to represent that person.
All of the costumes looked
spectacular. The boards filled the
room with color and all had a
unique look. Participating students
survived standing still for a long
period of time, while parents and
students circulated, reading the
display boards and taking photo-
graphs. They made it feel like a real
wax museum filled with real wax
figures. This year, we had extreme-
ly hardworking students. Good job
8th graders!

SUPER POWERFUL
YEAR
@ The Ridge
Running for the gold By Jacob Scannell
This year this Track team has a lot of potential. The
sprinters are some of our best players. We have some
good long distance runners like Solomon Kiger,
Courtney Farishian, Eric Jackson, and Grant Tacto.
Sprinters have a better chance of placing than our
long distance runners. Our fastest runners so far this
season are Dylan Waskey, Justin Jenkins, Jaden
Jenkins, Jordan Harris, TJ Woodall, Sean Kontos,
Ryan Wright, Kassie Jesrani, and Madelyn McAd-
ams.
Track team practices everyday to better their speed
and their endurance. Track meets are more social than
other competitive middle school sports, making this a
great way to get fit and have fun.

Our Holly Ridge Lady Hornets, so
far, are undefeated. We won our lat-
est game, Ridge vs. Lufkin. Hope-
fully we can keep our title of unde-
feated. We had 5 runs during our
game against Lufkin. The season is
going well so far. Our lady hornets
work really hard at practice every
day. Hopefully their hard work will
pay off and they will continue to be
undefeated. The girls on the team
are good at what they do. “Practice
makes perfect,” says Sky Wilson.
Sky is a great player, she tries hard
and has fun when she is at practice
with her teammates. The most im-
portant thing is not to win every
game, but that you are having fun
playing the sport.
Three Strikes, You’re Out
By Leah Nepo
This baseball season is already
looking up for HRMS. The very
first game of the season was March
7th, 2016 and it was an excellent
one. Playing against Zebulon, our
team hit it out of the ballpark
(literally!) with a score of 11-0. Us-
ing determination, skill, and their
strongest grips, HRMS was able to
make several hits and slide right
into first place. The team is taught
by, Brian Brice-the new coach of
the baseball boys. Keep up the
great work, Holly Ridge! If you’d
like to attend any one of these eye-
catching games, you can go to
Womble Park where most of them
are played. Want some more

Great Start to Season
By Braelyn Rathbun
First in
Fitness By Philasia Johnson
24 of the 6th grade student
body took a visit to SE Raleigh
to participate in the First in Fit-
ness competition. Out of all of
the team more than half of the
group ended up placing. 2 of
the students placed 6th, 6 of the
students positioned 4th, and 4
of the students had positioned
3rd. However students Billy
Waldron, in the 800-meter run,
and Allie Germann, in the tri-
athlon, positioned 1st as county
champions. In the end the en-
tire crew ended up in the top 5-
team finish. So technically
their all victors.
