Hollis Newsletter
` November, 2017
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope this newsletter finds everyone well. We are at the end of a beautiful October and let’s hope this warm
sunshine lasts as long as possible!
With the cold weather around the corner, we would like to remind parents to make sure that students come to
school wearing the necessary clothes to enjoy outdoor recess. We make every attempt to go outside for fresh air during
recess. Also, please label these items with your child’s name in case they are misplaced.
This certainly was a fun October. Along with exciting Halloween activities, we had 2 Principal’s Place
assemblies, enjoyed cultural arts activities, had our annual Math Night (Literacy Night will be in March), and continued
working hard to meet the rigorous standards of the curriculum. Additionally, we celebrated our “Unity Day” by wearing
orange to school on October 25th. On this day, we continued our efforts to defeat bullying and unite together under the
ideals of acceptance, tolerance, and inclusion.
Our 22nd
annual Hollis School Road Race was another huge success. Justin Ackerman and Christine Fosco did an
outstanding job organizing the event. This day involves a ton of work behind the scenes; and a lot of work was put in
before the actual day. We are very thankful for the commitment of so many volunteers to make this day a fun and
profitable one. It was great seeing so many Hollis students run the race in their Halloween costumes, and then wear those
costumes to school later that week!
Our homework policy states that children should be spending a required amount of time each night reading. We
would like to stress the importance of practicing math facts whenever possible as well. This can be done in the car, while
preparing a meal together, or anytime you see fit. The biggest stumbling block we face in mathematics is computation
skills. We have found students are able to follow the process of a problem, but not able to solve it correctly due to not
having their number facts memorized. Any increased practice is appreciated and will benefit your child.
November will be an exciting month at Hollis. We will all recognize and celebrate Election Day and Veterans’
Day. Grade 1 will love their field trip Plimouth Plantation. Students in grades 2-5 will dine at our annual Thanksgiving
Feast on Thursday, November 16th. This event is for students only. We will be looking for volunteers to help serve our
students and important guests on this day. Be on the lookout for more information.
First term report cards (for grades 1-5) will be sent home this month and parent teacher conferences will be
November 20th, November 29
th, and December 7
th. December 7
th is a half day of school. As in previous years, we will be
having parents sign up for conferences using a website called “PTC FAST”. More information will be sent home the
week of November 6th. Check the calendar for all important dates and times and as always don’t forget our school
motto… TEAM!!
As we sit and enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday, hopefully we can all reflect on our own lives and ask…
“WHO HAS IT BETTER THAN US!?”
Happy Thanksgiving,
Mr. Tim MacDonald
Principal
HOLLIS HAPPENINGS
Kindergarten Korner
Our routines have been well established
at this point in kindergarten. The children are proud
that they are growing more and more independent in
our classroom, and are able to make predictions about
daily schedules. Up first for our sounds... the /m/
sound spelled "Mm" and the /t/ sound spelled “Tt”.
Our students are becoming masters at identifying
the sounds heard at the beginning of words.
We just love our weekly stories and do such
super work identifying the characters, the setting
and the sequence of these stories. Our students are
doing an excellent job reading our take-home stories
each week. Make sure to have your child read their
books many times at home to reinforce one to one
correspondence and our high frequency words.
Our kindergarten friends had a blast with
subitizing for numbers 1-6 in the month of October.
We will continue subitizing for numbers 6 and beyond
this month.
Our “Trees” unit is a big hit in kindergarten.
We have studied the parts of the tree and their
important purposes. We
have examined leaves in
detail. We have compared
their shapes and colors, and
learned about why leaves
change color in the fall.
In October we discussed fire safety and
discussed the importance of fire drills at school and
at home. Don’t forget to check those smoke detector
batteries! This month we will
be honoring our Veterans and
their contributions to our
country. We will study
Pilgrims, Native Americans, and
the First Thanksgiving.
Our Handwriting Without Tears program is off
and running. The students are enjoying our “Frog
Jump Capitals” and numeral formations.
Wild in Grade One
What a fast and fun month of October!! Halloween has
passed and we had such fun with costumes, sweet and scary! Thank
you for all the parent support with getting homework routines or
Reading logs under way. Depending on your teacher, there were
opportunities for parent involvement whether it was joining us for
Math Night, in Computer Lab, for Pumpkin Investigations or with
Ms. Tobin’s traditional Big Pumpkin event. There will be many more
opportunities throughout the year.
Now we are looking forward to November with the many
exciting things we will learn and do together. The
first thing we will do is visit Plimoth Plantation for
our Field Trip! This trip brings our learning about
Pilgrim and Native American girls and boys to life
and allows us real hands on experiences. The trip is
Friday, November 3rd…what a busy week with
Halloween on that Tuesday too!
With Reading Literacy, we are working hard to learn all
the routines on Reading Street. We have moved into Unit 1 and are
learning and reading about Animals, Tame and Wild. The students
are making excellent connections and can relate to the Big Ideas.
We hope that you are able to use the weekly overview with
homework, so that at home, Amazing Words and other concepts
can be reinforced through discussion. In Phonics, we are having
fun making words, real and nonsense. Students enjoy playing word
games in reading centers to make learning to read fun! Please
remember our high frequency words are words we CAN NOT sound
out…we “see them and say them”. They could be called Trick Words
too!
In Writing, we are encouraged to use “kid” (phonetic)
spelling if we are not sure how to spell a word and this is good for
homework too. Currently, our focus is on writing with a noun and
verb and using capitals and end marks.
Math makes number sense… all students will be asked to
count, read and write numbers through 100 by the end of term 1.
Students should also be able to tell you how many tens and ones
any given number has in it. Please continue to look for any
opportunity at home to quiz them with tens/ones and to find
numbers greater than, less than, with a pattern, etc… In October,
we did explore addition concepts with strategy of counting up and
adding in any order. More to come with addition strategies..
In Labs, we enjoyed Leaf prints, Spiders & Bats,
Halloween, and learning about Seasonal Changes and the Weather.
Many thanks to our generous PTO who brought the Southwick Zoo
program! This is always a 1st Grade favorite.
In November, we will focus on being thankful and
preparing our classrooms for conferences and the traditional 1st
Grade Thanksgiving Show. We look forward to seeing you soon so
we can share the hard work being done in Grade 1.
Working Together in
Grade 2 Reading
October seemed to fly by! Thank you to the
Braintree Fire Fighters for a wonderful Fire Safety
program. Halloween was a blast as we enjoyed school
decked out in fun and terrifying
costumes. Earlier this week, we
enjoyed spending the day with our
teddy bears while we celebrated
Teddy Roosevelt’s birthday! We read
to, wrote about, and based our math work on our
furry friends.
In Math, we are working with the concepts of
addition and subtraction. We are using hundred
charts, fact families, place value, and number lines to
help us with the concepts. We are also working on
finding the missing addend in number sentences. We
will continue to work on these facts while using the
same strategies to add 2 digit numbers without using
an equation! Be sure to ask your student to show you
how to do this at home!
In Reading, we are beginning a unit on working
together. We will be reading both fiction and non-
fiction stories including “Tara and Tiree, Fearless
Friends” and a story about Abraham Lincoln. In
phonics, we will be looking at r-controlled vowels,
contractions, plurals, and vowel patterns that say long
‘a’. Get ready for lots of learning!
In Science we are exploring different types
of matter. We have used the past month to use
various properties to describe solids and liquids. In
November, we will be expanding our knowledge of the
states of matter to explore how objects can change
states.
In Social Studies we are looking at the 7
continents and the 5 major oceans. We will
soon be moving into studying North America
and the major landmarks in our continent. We
are also continuing our Second Step program as
we work on a unit about feelings and emotions.
We are looking forward to meeting with you
to discuss your child’s progress in the upcoming
month. We are also looking forward to our
Thanksgiving feast! Thank you for all of your
continued support with our nightly reading, spelling
practice, and math fact practice!
Big Plans for
Grade 3
We hope you had a fabulous Halloween and
don’t get too overstuffed with candy. We have
completed the first Reading theme
and will be moving into the “Big Plans”
theme. This is very much like our
academic plans-big concepts, big
ideas and big accomplishments.
Writing, proofreading, and comprehension are the
concepts on the docket for this month.
The students are beginning their study of
Massachusetts. We started off
thinking about why we study
history. Now we are beginning to
take a more in depth look at the
Wampanoags and their life back in the 1600’s.
In Math, we are focusing on addition, estimating
the sum and going to begin subtraction soon. We may
add using a number line, place value,
or the standard algorithm (the way
we learned as kids). Students need
to not only try to get the correct
answer, but also be able to explain
how they arrived at their answer.
Being able to explain our mathematical thinking is
very important. Practicing addition and subtraction
facts at home helps students to master those facts
as well as help with the more difficult concepts.
Finally, remember that your child must read
for 15-20 minutes every evening. This is so important
to their growth academically as well as to develop a
love for reading.
Fourth Grade Fitness!
The fourth grade students had a
wonderful opportunity to participate in the New
England Revolution Fitness Day on October 4th.
We practiced different exercises on the field at
Gillette Stadium. Students learned about the
importance of exercise and
healthy eating as they listened
to advice from professional
soccer players!
Reading has all students working on
enhancing their comprehension with Owls in the
Family. Some of the skills and topics classes
have been working on are similes, cause and
effect, setting, opinion, and inferencing.
Students in Language Arts classes have
completed the essay entitled What the Flag
Means to Me. They have also finished an in
class descriptive pumpkin writing and will begin
working on a persuasive Thanksgiving themed
piece.
In Math we have wrapped up addition and
subtraction. We will continue to
reinforce our facts with the weekly
thatquiz.org assignments. We will also
be working on multiples and factors as
well as prime and composite numbers.
Social Studies classes have explored the
regions of the United States. They have begun
a tour of the Northeast region of our country,
which will enhance their knowledge about the
geography, climate, and resources of our region.
We are wrapping up the “Energy & Speed”
scope in Science class. The students are looking
forward to “Energy & Collision” next.
We look forward to meeting with you
near the end of November and beginning of
December for parent-teacher conferences.
Grade 5 is Grateful As we enter this festive season, our 5th
graders are grateful for the many opportunities
afforded to them as the “leaders” of the Hollis
School. November will find us wrapping up our first
term and looking forward to more
exciting learning experiences in all
subject areas. This month will also
feature our famous “Turkey Trot”. This
event, only for our 5th graders, occurs just before
our Thanksgiving break. Making wonderful choices,
we are working and learning what it means to be a
leader and role model.
In Science, we are wrapping up our unit on
matter. The students
really enjoyed
experimenting with
different substances
and testing their properties. We are preparing to
start exploring electric and magnetic forces along
with transfers of energy for November.
In Social Studies we are just finishing our
unit on the Vikings. Student favorites from this unit
were learning the Viking Alphabet and getting to
create their own Viking shields. We are now getting
ready to start out first unit in our textbook which
will cover early American cultures. November also
finds us creating Kachina masks, which will be
displayed in the cafeteria for the Hollis Thanksgiving
celebration.
In ELA our students continue to practice the
steps in the writing process and are becoming more
independent every day.
In Math, we are finishing our unit on place
value with decimals. They have learned how to read
and write decimals up to the thousandths place.
Next, the students will learn how to use the
“standard algorithm” when multiplying multi-digit
numbers.
In Reading we are still enjoying Number the Stars. We have acquired much knowledge of the
World War II time period and have enjoyed various
texts that relate to the plot of our novel. Students
have learned many reading strategies to increase
their comprehension including making connections,
predictions, and using context clues for unfamiliar
vocabulary.
Fitnessgram In November the 4th grade students will be
participating in Fitnessgram. The primary purpose of
Fitnessgram is to promote enjoyable regular physical
activity and to provide the teacher; student and
parent/guardian with information that will help the
student maintain or improve their level of health
related fitness.
During physical education class students will
perform a variety of fitness tests that measure the
health components of fitness (cardiovascular
endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance
and flexibility). During the month of November and
December, the student’s performance at these
various activities will be recorded.
Each child’s performance is compared to
standards that have been set for children at this age
level. Students are compared to these standards, not
their classmates or other peers. The Fitnessgram
profile is an excellent tool to help students learn
more about their own physical fitness and give them
the knowledge to improve their fitness levels for
lifelong good health.
If you have any questions about your fourth
grader’s Fitnessgram, please contact Ms. Katilus or
Melonie Bennett, Director of Physical Education and
Health at (781)848-4000 x 2235

Notes from
Mrs. Martin
October is a very enjoyable month in music
classes, as we are doing a lot
of seasonal music. Grade one
is learning about quarter notes
and eighth notes, through
moving and singing Halloween
songs.
In second grade,
students have studied basic musical notation, rhythm
patterns, and dynamics. They have also listened and
moved to “In the Hall of the Mountain King”, from the
Peer Gynt Suite by Edvard Grieg.
Third grade has been learning folk songs from
other cultures, and how to follow the shape of a
melody. In addition, they have enjoyed learning about
program music and listening to “Danse Macabre” by
Camille Saint Saens.
Fourth grade has been singing songs in
Spanish, and listening and moving to scary
music. They have also learned about compositional
techniques used to make music sound frightening.
If you are the parent of a fifth grader,
please encourage them to continue to memorize their
chorus music at home.

Hollis students have been working hard down
in the library! We continue to share what we have
been reading and which we enjoyed the most.
5th Grade has been using the interactive whiteboard
to study Viking History. This is in alignment with 5th
grade Social Studies curriculum Units on explorers.
We have been exploring how Vikings had
an impact on History through their
exploration and culture. We have been
looking at nonfiction videos and text to support our
understanding. We even completed a "choose your
own adventure" Viking raid.
4th Grade has been exploring the different regions
of the United States as part of their Social Studies
curriculum. First stop: The Northeast! We have been
learning about the history of Ellis Island and the
immigrants who passed through there. We have been
taking an interactive tour through history, including
listening to audio of actual immigrants who have
traveled through there and their memories of this
experience. We will be taking a first person
interactive tour through the process to see
how we would have fared!
3rd Grade has been studying famous people
in history through our Biography Unit. We have been
learning about the features of biographies. We have
also been looking at lesser known people in history
and studying what made them famous (including,
activists, inventors and trail blazers.)
2nd Grade has been honing their mapping skills by
reading the book Follow That Map and map skills
games on the interactive whiteboard.
1st Grade and Kindergarten have been continuing to
learn the routines of a library and how the library is
organized. We have been enjoying read alouds and
sharing some of our favorite books. So far, the Piggy
and Elephant series by Mo Willems continues to be a
favorite! We have also enjoyed some seasonal
favorites!
UPDATES
FROM
ART CLASS
Kindergarteners are drawing apples and
learning about warm colors, yellow, orange and
red, then coloring in the basket with cool colors,
blue, purple and green. Next lesson is,
”Monsters,” where students will learn about
different lines, straight, wiggly, zigzag, drawing
on black paper to make a monster.
First graders just completed a
drawing of an Owl with texture fur. This
lesson uses the shape of an oval to draw
an owl, adding textures to the body and
wings. They are currently working on drawing
dinosaurs and their environment.
Second graders just completed the lesson
“Scarecrow”, drawing a basic
figure, adding crops of corn and
pumpkins. Students are
currently drawing a superhero,
building on the previous lesson
of drawing the figure.
Third grade students are going to be
starting the project ,“Triarama”. This lesson
allows the students to chose an environment in
which they will make a paper triangle to house
their environment and make a clay animal that
belongs in that environment.
Fourth grade is completing the lesson
“Castles”. This lesson teaches the three
elements of a landscape. Also, it teaches other
details about castles, including the environment
in which they are built and what they’re made of.
Fifth graders are drawing animals and the
jungle, based on the artist,
Henry Rousseau. This
lesson includes basic
drawing skills of jungle
animals, also focusing on
flora of the jungle and how
to draw it.
The health room has been busy with vision and
hearing screenings. All of the students have been
screened. Notices were sent home only for those students
who did not pass the screening. Please return forms after
your child has seen the ophthalmologist or audiologist.
Hollis School continues to reinforce strategies for
combating the flu, i.e. frequent hand washing, plenty of
rest, proper nutrition, etc. Classrooms are in need of hand
sanitizer. If possible, please pick up a bottle for your
child’s classroom.
Our fluoride program will begin in November.
Grades 3, 4, & 5 are allowed to participate once the
permission slip is signed and returned. Fluoride is the most
effective way to reduce the incidence of tooth decay.
Mouth rinsing with a fluoride solution in school has proven
to be both effective and economical.
Please submit your mandatory 4th grade physical.
There are still several 5th grade students who have not
turned in their physical. If you have any questions
regarding physicals or any health concerns, please don’t
hesitate to call. Nurse Jane

Self-directed Movers In Learning Experiences
~ Physical Education Notes ~
Wow, what a First Term! We spent the beginning of the year getting to know each other
via: Ice Breakers, Teambuilding, Cooperative Activities and Group Problem Solving. The
First Term primarily consists of establishing a learning environment, following directions,
and developing rules & routines. Problems that occurred, arose from talking while the
teacher was giving instruction, playing with the equipment during instruction, &/or
making unsafe choices such as; sliding or diving on the floor, and or being too rough with
each other or the equipment. This is an on-going process, which should smooth out as the
year progresses. For the most part, the students’ motor ability meets the objectives for
their grade level. Additional topics covered this term include:
Grade 1: Locomotor, Shapes, Directions, Levels, Relationships to Objects, Jumping and
Landing (with an emphasis on Hopscotch, Hula Hoops & Jumping Rope, which are
considered Recess Links). We are just starting Chasing/Fleeing & Dodging, which are
lead-up skills to most team sports! And then it’s on to Soccer Skills.
Grades 2-3: Sport Concepts: Acceleration & Deceleration, Agility & Directionality,
Reaction Time, Pathways and Chasing/Fleeing & Dodging.
Future units will include:
2 Squares and Four Squares- Recess Links, Relationships to Objects/Prepositions,
and Jumping & Landing. This included Chinese Jump Rope, Individual and Long Rope
Skills, which are additional Recess Links.
*Grade 3 will be also assessed on the common names of bones.
Grades 4-5: Our J.V. and Varsity are off to a great start! We knocked it out of the park
with our Cooperative Games Lessons, and scored a touchdown with our Flag Football
Unit! During Recess 101, students will participate in such activities as: Competitive and
Recess Four Squares, Kan Jam & Cornhole, Hula Hoops & Jump Ropes, & Cup Stacking.
Students will also participate in the Fitnessgram. These fitness profiles help students
become aware of their Healthy Fitness Zone Levels in the following areas:
Cardio = The PACER, Strength = Push-ups, Endurance = Curl-ups, and
Flexibility includes the Sit & Reach, Trunk Lift as well as Shoulder Flexibility.
