Emergency Nursing Review. Holleran RS. St. Louis: Mosby- Year Book, 1992, 326 pp., $30.95, ISBN 0-8016-2462-2. Taking the CEN examination does not have to be a mysterious, nerve-wracking journey into the unknown. Ren6e Semonin Holleran's book, Emergency Nursing Review, can help you remove some of the mystery and al- leviate some of the anxiety surrounding the test, espe- cially is you are taking the CEN exam for the first time. First of all, do not skip over the "Foreword" (as many of us do). It provides hints on how to prepare for the exam, and invaluable pointers on test-taking strategies. For in- stance, Ms. Holleran warns not to "overlook key words such as early, late .... or nursing action," and to "beware of qualifiers like always, never, all and every, since in nursing, nothing is 100% certain." This is excellent advice. Each chapter covers a separate body system (such as abdominal or respiratory emergencies) or discusses emer- gency-related topics, including substance abuse, patient education and discharge planning, and disaster prepared- ness and management. Chapters are further divided into a thorough outline of the subject and a brief overview, followed by a number of multiple-choice questions. The final section of each chapter explains the answers as they relate to a particu- lar step of the nursing process, which I found very help- ful. My only suggestion would be to have an "all-inclu- sive" test at the end of the text to give the reader a more realistic view of the CEN exam, and to provide answer sheets to avoid marking up the individual tests. I recommend Emergency Nursing Review for anyone who plans to take the CEN exam, or for periodic review and self-evaluation of emergency nursing principles.--SC Trauma Ready Reference. Sheehy SB. St. Louis: Mosby- Year Book, 1994, 43 pp., $12.95, ISBN 0-8151-7823-9. A powerhouse of information condensed into 43 pages--a must for every trauma nurse! This user-friendly, spiral-bound reference manual is pocket-sized to be your constant companion at work. Sheehy managed to capture essential nuggets of trauma information and format them into an alphabetically indexed, easy-to-use reference guide. The nine topics covered in this reference include airway, assessment, burns, cervical spine, chest, circula- tion, diagnostics, pediatrics, and a final section of general information that includes signs and symptoms of hypo- thermia, an organ donation flowchart, tetanUs prophy- laxis protocol, and a list of standard trauma radiographs and laboratory tests. There is no wasted space in this manual--even the front and back covers include valuable information on laboratory test values. This concise but highly useful laboratory section includes parameters for abnormal values, as well as a list of possible or probable causes for each abnormality. The first section, airway, lists steps necessary to per- form a needle cricothyroidotomy and tactile/digital intu- bation. Each procedure is so clearly detailed that even the less experienced among us should be able to follow the directions with minimal difficulty. The general assess- ment section lists the ABC 4 primary trauma survey parameters and a DERM (brainstem function) chart so that one can quickly perform a comprehensive primary survey. Other useful information included in the assess- ment section is the Glasgow Coma Scale, a neuromuscu- lar assessment chart, a bulleted list of essential prehospi- tal report information, and two commonly used trauma scoring systems (Revised Trauma Score and Trauma Score), both clearly formatted. Six pages of information on burns include illustra- tions of escharotomy placement, calculation of percent surface area burned, adult and infant rule of nines chart, and a Lund and Browder formula chart. Other information in this section includes the Baxter and Modified Brooke formulas for fluid replacement. Although the information presented is relevant, directions are not included for us- ing one of the percent surface area burn charts, so this in- formation would be less useful in a hurried situation. One of the most useful parts of the manual is the con- tent addressing injuries. The two pages addressing cervi- cal spine injury include directions for mixing high-dose methylprednisolone and protocol for administering the drug. Both pages of information are clearly detailed and obviously useful. Several pages on chest trauma list assessment findings, diagnostic modalities, and thera- J EMERGNURS 1995;21:223-5 Copyright 9 1995 by the Emergency Nurses Association. 0099-1757/95 $3.00 + 0 18/64/63662 June 1~5 223
