Kauhava has been home to Antti Tuuri,a writer known for his interpretation of the local scenery and culture, and the actor Kalevi Haapoja, who simply radiates the qualities of our region of Ostrobothnia. Kauhava has also often appeared on the big and little screens, with dozens of movies, movie scenes, TV series and documentaries having been filmed in Kauhava and its surroundings.

The city of Kauhava came into being on 1 January 2009 with the merger of four municipalities: Alahärmä, Kauhava, Kortesjärvi and Ylihärmä. With a population of 16,000 people, Kauhava is now the third largest municipality in Southern Ostrobothnia.

Kauhava has traditionally been able to offer a good range of jobs and our unemployment rate is the lowest in the district. An amazing 1500 businesses operate in Kauhava. When combined with the demand for workers from the public sector, the number of jobs on offer exceeds the size of the local workforce in Kauhava.

Kauhava is a developing commercial and administrative center in the northern part of Southern Ostrobothnia. It is home to an agro-technology business cluster and a significant wood products industry. The service industry has also grown significantly in recent years, particularly in the tourism industry thanks to PowerPark, Finland's fastest growing amusement park.

The call of the wildernessThe Kauhava region has four Natura protected wilderness areas: the Hirvijoki River forests, Lummukkakangas heath, Viitaneva-Storholmanneva wetlands and Paljakanneva-Åkantmossen wetlands. Lummukkakangas heath provides a home for wood grouse, three-toed woodpeckers, Ural owls, Siberian jays, European otters, and Siberian flying-squirrels. The Viitaneva-Storholmanneva wetlands bird population is noted for the diversity of its species and the number of mated pairs, including common cranes, European golden plovers, and wood sandpipers. Geese and swans spread out over the wetlands during migration season. The PaljakannevaÅkantmossen wetlands offer sightings of hen harriers, black woodpeckers, loons, honey buzzards, and golden plovers.

KirkkopakkaKirkkopakka is a reddish formation of granite boulders left over from the last ice age. This site is in Alahärmä, Ekola and is a place of many old and mysterious tales. The history of Kirkkopakka is related to the birth of the Jaeger movement, which fought for Finnish independence.

The films have chiefly covered the Ostrobothnianpersona, the history of Finland, our independent and free spirit, and our entrepreneurial drive. The best-known TV series filmed in Kauhava are "Hyvienihmisten kylä" (The Town of Good People) in the 1990s and "Taistelulentäjät" (Fighter Pilots) in 2010, which was filmed at the Finnish Training Air Wing.

The city has two digital movie theaters. The Y-Kino theatre in Kauhava presents live broadcasts of world-class opera and ballet productions from London's Covent Garden. The Magnum theatre in the PowerPark amusement park also shows 5D films.
