Parenting:The Super-Mom

© FOTOLIA

For every diaper change or grocerylist that goes unnoticed, the super-mom behind it deserves more than

your standard Christmas gift. She deserves to be pampered, treated

or blown away by this year’s gift – nopressure. Luckily, it usually doesn’t takemuch for the selfless moms in our lives tofeel loved. A hug from a child or thank-you from a spouse will get the job done. But this year, kick your gift-giving ef-

forts up a notch by finding that perfect giftthat rewards her daily efforts that keep thehousehold running.A 'Me' TripWhat is a better gift than some “me

time?” Send your sweetie away for a dayto the spa center and let her soak in themassages, pedicures and facials. A littlepampering can easily wipe away the stressthat comes with housework and children, helping rejuvenate and re-energize Mom.If you think she’d enjoy a night away,

choose a center that has lodging and puther up for a night. Doing so will ensureshe gets a solid night’s sleep without thepotential of being awakened by a cry-ing baby or a midnight request from anolder child.A Room Re-DoIs there a specific room in your home

that drives the super-mom in your life

crazy? Maybe it is cluttered or just plainunappealing to look at? Put your handyskills – or those of a trained professional –to good use and renovate the problem areafor her Christmas gift. You can either offer her the gift as an

IOU, telling her you have successfullysaved money for the project and are readyto start. Or, have it completed while sheis away one weekend with her friends. The latter will take some assurance thatyou know exactly what color, layout anddesign scheme she will enjoy to makesure your gift doesn’t fall flat.Personalized JewelryDiamond rings and silver pendants

will surely do the trick here, but personal-ize a piece of jewelry to really speak toMom’s heart. Most jewelers will engraveshort messages or phrases on a piece ofjewelry, whether it be a child’s name,a special quote or maybe a saying thatepitomizes your life together.Charm bracelets also fall under this

category and allow for the super-mom tocustomize it for years to come. You canchoose the bracelet and a few personal-ized charms now and watch her fill it upwith relics symbolizing her children, hob-bies and passions.

The American Pet Products As-sociation reports that in 2013,Americans spent $55.72 billion

on our pets. For 2014, it is estimatedspending will increase to $58.51 bil-lion. It’s not that surprising when youconsider that many see their pets as anextension of the family.Because of this, pet owners also

enjoy holiday shopping for their “ba-bies” and sometimes hang stockingsor place gifts under the tree.Woof Gang Bakery & GroomingApril Meece, owner of Woof Gang

Bakery & Grooming, says the holidayseason is a busier time of year forthem.Opened in March of 2013, Woof

Gang caters to dogs with a variety ofmerchandise, as well as full-servicegrooming for both dogs and cats, something you probably won’t findelsewhere.“Everybody is trying to get their

babies smelling good for companycoming or travel,” she said. For your favorite pooch, you can

find just about everything you needunder one roof. Woof Gang has 2,600square feet of space packed full ofeverything from toys, sweaters andleashes, to doggie beds, handmadetreats and an extensive variety of natu-ral dog food.Meece said dog owners love to

buy toys for the stocking, or buy theirfavorite friend some delicious naturaltreats. The doggie cookies, made right

on the premises, are its No. 1 sellerthroughout the holidays.Beds, doggie sweaters, collars and

more are popular picks during the hol-iday season. For under the tree, toysare tops again, and Baylor items suchas jerseys, magnets, toys and special-order beds are popular this year.“We have just about everything

you need except the pets,”Meece said. You can get a custom birthday or

Christmas cake for your best friend,or, if you want to buy for others, purchase a gift certificate good foranything in the store.Treat your favorite pet to a “doggie

spa experience” and take advantage ofWoof Gang’s groomers, which have acombined experience of more than40 years.Woof Gang also offers “Yappy

Hours” once a month, where dogs cansocialize with each other and pet own-ers can take advantage of specials.Find out more about what Woof

Gang Bakery & Grooming has tooffer. Visit them online at woofgang-bakery.com/woofgangbakerywaco, orcome in person for a real experienceat 1201 Hewitt Dr., Suite 205. Hoursare Monday through Friday, from 9a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m.to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noonto 5 p.m.DogtopiaAnother great place to check out

for your pampered pooch during theholiday season (or anytime) is Dogto-pia. Co-owner Kim Nichols says thatpet owners especially include their

dogs in the holiday and want themlooking and feeling good.“There’s a lot of dog lovers in

Waco,” she said. “We kind of refer tothem now as dog parents. They arepart of the family. It’s an extension ofthe family now.”For the holidays, many people

want their dogs groomed, and Dog-topia offers special holiday scentsfor shampooing, as well as holidaycologne. Many people also have to board

their dogs this time of year, and atDogtopia, it’s not your typical board-ing experience. Dogs are separatedby size and temperament and haveappropriate, supervised play groupsbased on their activity level.“We’re just really a different kind

of set up than the more traditionalboarding type facility,” Nichols said.Even more unique is that anxious

owners who don’t like be separatedfrom their beloved friend can checkon them via web cam whilethey’re away. There’s also day boarding if you

want to leave your dog while youshop or get some chores done.

Established nearly seven years ago,Dogtopia also offers a selection ofgifts for your pet, from dog beds anddog toys to gift packages and lots ofstocking stuffers, including plenty ofholiday-themed toys. If you’re shop-ping for a pet lover, consider a scarfwith paw prints or some all-naturalhealthy treats. Even naughty dogs canget in on the action with a toy ballroughly shaped and stamped with theword, “Coal.”Another special treat, called

Fruitables Snowflakes, are made withsnowflakes for Christmas, and there’seven a cute video on how they harvestthe snow.If you don’t know what your pet

lover wants, there’s always a giftcertificate that can be used for retailservices, spa services or overnightboarding.Dogtopia, located at 5301 Bosque

Blvd., Suite 300, in Waco, is openMonday through Friday from 7 a.m.to 7 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m.to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from 11 a.m.to 2 p.m. Visit them online atwww.dogdaycarewaco.com.

Sports:The Golfer

Golf is a sport that many takevery seriously. Others not somuch. No matter the skill level

of that special someone on yourChristmas list this year, plenty of op-tions for gifts are available.New balls, golf bags and clubs

will be flying off the shelves thisholiday season. Why not set your giftapart from the rest?GPS UnitsSometimes even the most high-

level golfers need a hand. If theydon’t have a caddy to help themmeasure distance or identify coursechallenges, the next best thing maybe a portable GPS unit that givesthem laser-accurate information onthese factors. These units provide accurate yard-

ages to both the green and layup loca-tions. They display information onhigh-resolution screens and functionsimilarly to a GPS device you mayrely on in your car.Animal Head CoversIf you’ve watched any profes-

sional golf, you know that many ofthe sport’s superstars cover their clubheads with stuffed animal heads likelions, Koala bears and tigers. Thefluffy features may seem a bit zany, but they actually do serve a pur-pose – protecting the club headsfrom the elements whilealso giving many oth-erwise serious golfersa reason to re-lax and smileevery oncein a while.

Some online companies haveevery breed of dog, farm animal andeven sea creature imaginable on theirhead cover line. From monkeys towild boars, you can find a productthat fits the personality of the golferin your life.Rain GearYou’re in the middle of walking a

long hole with minimum tree cover, and the skies open up. Rain show-ers down on you and you have nochoice but to laugh it off and walk alittle faster. If you play golf regular-ly, this has likely happened to you.Rain gear can be an invaluable

tool to golfers who choose to playthrough inclement weather – even indownpour conditions. Many com-panies make waterproof rain hoodsthat snap on a golf bag, allowing foreasy access to clubs inadverse conditions. You could also check your re-

cipient’s bag sometime to see if thegolfer is properly prepared for therain. A golf umbrella and rain slicker

can go a long way in thewet weather.

The Youngsters

Children can actually be one of theeasiest groups to please becausethey will often tell you exactly

what they hope to receive onChristmas morning.Whether it’s the next big video

game or the new talking animal fad,you have likely been given an ex-tensive list of potential presents thisholiday season. But how do you filterthrough it to make sure every gift re-turns a smile for your investment?ToddlersFor 2- to 3-year-olds, it is often

quantity over quality when it comesto Christmas gifts. These are the yearsyou don’t necessarily have to break

the bank for your holiday spending. Apuzzle set with blocks or new toy in-struments can be relatively inexpensivegifts that keep your toddler busy andentertained.Consider your child’s walking stage

when choosing a gift. If they are ableto sit upright with no problem, then acollection of toy zoo animals may bethe perfect gift. Toddlers who have dis-covered the art of walking will enjoy adrag-along toy animal or vehicle. If you’re buying for another family,

be sure to check with the parents firstto avoid unwanted or duplicate toys.

Young ChildrenFinding the perfect gift for children

between the toddler and teenage yearsrequires knowledge of what they’reinterested in. This can be the most dif-ficult age group to please. Generally, anoutdoor activity of some type – waterguns or yard games – can be a hit forthose in this age group. For the tweens in your life, a paid

ticket to the science center or children'smuseum in your closest city may fit thebill. For the more outdoorsy recipients, you can find exploration or nature kitsthat will put their natural curiosity togood use.TeenagersHopefully the teenager in your life

has discovered a hobby or sport about

which they are passionate. Whether itbe piano, football or model-making,there is a gift out there to match theircreative skills. If they’ve just started picking up a

new endeavor, maybe professional les-sons or a digital how-to book may bethe perfect gift to sharpen theirskill set.The teenage years are also about

curiosity, so finding a coffee-tablephoto book on their favorite recordingartist or history subject will help themlearn more while also enjoying bright, vibrant photos.

Charity:The Homeless

© FOTOLIA

The homeless are often over-looked around the holidaysas we gather with friends and

family. People who are down ontheir luck and out of their homes thisChristmas are likely scrounging forfood and shelter, let alone gifts underthe tree. They are in great need this season

and can use a helping hand to boosttheir spirits.Give RecyclablesDo you save bottles, cans and

newspapers for recycling? Why notdonate them to a homeless shelter inyour area? The shelter can use thecash collected from the recyclingprocess for more services, food orblankets for its inventories. It may also choose to give the

recyclable materials to a local home-less person for their uses. Manyhomeless people rely on collectingand converting recyclable materialsinto income. You can do your part bygiving up a bit of extra pock-et change every month.Donate ToysThink of someone who

is homeless. What visionpops up in your mind? Thetype we see in the movies, bearded with a gravelly voice? What about a sweet young girlwhose parents recently lost theirjobs and home? That is the face of many home-

less people in the United States whowill not have the luxury of receivingChristmas presents this year. That is,unless you step up.

Contact your local shelters to seeif they have children among theirpopulations and donate anything youcan to help them, including food, toys and clothing.Your TimeVolunteer your time around the

holidays at a local homeless shel-ter, and you will understand thetrue meaning of “It is better to givethan receive.” Do you have an extracouple of hours during the weekendsthis December? Shelter staff needhelp in preparing meals and cleaningfacilities.Your voluntary contribution will

cost you nothing financially, and youwill gain a new appreciation for yourhome and life. Your time is one ofthe greatest gifts you can give a local

shelter this holi-day season.
