Yet  another  year  has  passed  and  it  is  time  to  celebrate  our  anniversary!    Please  come  and  join  us  for  our  delicious  tea  which  is  always  a  wonderful  selection  of  homemade  cakes,  sausage  rolls,  scones,  sandwiches  etc.in  the  Chapel  at  5  p.m  on  the  4th  June  when  we  have  been  at  Ponts  Green  for  53  years.  The  Chapel  has  been  in  existence  since  1880  when  it  was  formed  and  met  in  a  barn  on  the  outskirts  of  the  village.    We  will  have  a  Service  as  usual  at  6-‐30  p.m  and  do  hope  you  will  be  able  to  join  us.If  you  can  come  to  the  tea  but  not  the  Service  that  is  just  fine,  or  if  you  can  only  come  to  the  Service  and  not  the  tea  that  is  also  o.k.    We  look  forward  to  welcoming  you.

Don’t  forget  that  our  next  Healing  Service  is  on  the  30th  July  when  we  have  a  team  from  Shinewater  Community  Centre,  Eastbourne  coming  to  lead  our  Service.

The  Healing  Service  we  held  on  the  30th  April  was  enjoyed  by  all  who  came  and  I  had  3  people  come  up  to  me  afterwards  and  tell  me  that  they  had  really  felt  the  Holy  Spirit  working  on  them  as  they  were  being  prayed  for.

We  have  had  a  full  gas  cylinder  stolen  from  behind  the  Chapel  recently  and  also  somebody  has  hack-‐  sawed  off  the  brass  ‘stays’  which  hold  back  the  front  doors.    It  is  so  sad  to  think  that  there  are  now  people  around  who  feel  it  necessary  to  steal  from  a  place  of  Worship.    We  are  given  Ten  Commandments  in  the  Bible  in  Exodus  20  one  of  which  is  “You  shall  not  steal”.    I  would  urge  you  all  to  be  vigilant  with  your  own  property  because  if  a  person  is  prepared  to  steal  from  the  Chapel  they  are  sure  to  steal  from  your  homes  and  garden  sheds.Look  at  our  website  for  more  information:  www.ashburnhamchapel.co.uk

Churchwarden  retirement

After  24  years  as  Churchwarden  at  Penhurst,  I  have  decided  to  step  down  and  allow  someone  else  the  opportunity  to  serve  in  this  post.  There  have  been  many  challenges  over  the  years  including  re-‐roofing  the  Chancel  and

re-‐ordering  of  the  vestry  to  mention  but  a  few.My  wife  has  been  a  great  support  behind  the  scenes,  and  we  are  both

totally  overwhelmed  by  the  enormous  generosity  of  all  those  at  Penhurst  Church  in  giving  us  such  wonderful  gifts,  and  thank  them  sincerely.

Thought  for  the  month

“The  Future  You:  Why  the  only  future  worth  building  includes  everyone”

Looking  at  my  ‘to  do  list’  first  thing  today,  four  things  stood  out.  To  look  at  a  talk  delivered  by  Pope  Francis,  to  attend  the  all  important  WI  Coffee  Morning    at  the  Sports  Pavilion,  to  write  up  the  notices  on  church  and  parish  events  for  the  service  at  Ashburnham  Church  tomorrow  ….and  start  thinking  about  this  “Thought  for  the  Month”.  By  this  evening  I  found  they  were  all  connected!

Pope  Francis  spoke  wonderfully  to  a  Technology,  Entertainment  and  Design  Conference  in  Vancouver  entitled  “The  Future  You”  via  a  video  link  from  The  Vatican.  The  Pope’s  message  was  headed  “the  only  future  worth  building  includes  everyone”.  He  stressed  “we  all  need  each  other,  none  of  us  is  an  island  and  …  we  can  only  build  a  future  by  standing  together,  including  everyone.”  The  Pope  challenged  us  all  to  “help  each  other  all  together”  using  the  story  of  the  Good  Samaritan  as  a  mark  of  the  humanity  needed  in  the  “darkness  of  today’s  conflicts.”

Suitably  challenged,  Elfreda  and  I  headed  towards  the  WI  Coffee  Morning.  Well  what  a  lovely  event  this  was  where  “everyone”  seemed  to  be  present  and  there  were  no  “I’s”  sitting  on  their  own.  It  did  us  good  to  see  so  many  friends  and  have  a  good  catch-‐up.  The  spread  on  the  table  was  fantastic  too  and  a  clear  gift  of  baking  skill  and  love  to  everyone  gathered.

Looking  later  at  the  church  notices  for  tomorrow,  I  noticed  the  Parish  Magazine  had  only  eleven  church  and  village  events  to  attend  this  week.  This  was  less  than  the  seventeen  events  of  the  previous  week,  when  Elfreda  was  double  booked  for  the  Gardening  Club  and  the  WI  meetings!  How  wonderful  that  there  are  so  many  clubs  and  events  in  Ashburnham  and  Penhurst  where  everyone  can  be  together  and  look  after  and  support  each  other.

At  the  end  of  his  talk  Pope  Francis  asked  us  all  to  show  tenderness  to  each  other,  defining  it  as  “the  love  that  comes  close  and  becomes  real.”  He  implored  “each  and  every  one  of  us…to  become  a  bright  candle  and  a  reminder  that  light  will  overcome  darkness.”

So  each  of  us  individually  can  be  enough  for  that  light  and  hope  to  shine  brightly  for  others  –  but  especially  when  we  are  all  together  in  groups.  So  keep  going  to  all  those  great  events  in  the  Parish  Magazine  –  and  let’s  take  our  metaphorical  candles  and  matches  along  with  us  to  shine  a  light  for  all  of  us  together. With  love  and  every  blessingJohn  Cormode

It  hardly  seems  any  time  at  all  that  our  WI  started  up  again  after  a  long  absence  –  spurred  on  by  Steve  the  Postman,  and  initiated  by  Mary  Jones  in  2007.      It  has  been  a  great  opportunity  to  make  friends,  and  the  side-‐effect  of  bringing  together  women  in  our  villages  has  been  other  new  activities,  including  the  gardening  club,  book  groups,  and  the  annual  fete  and  flower  show.    Not  to  mention  the  MI  ….

We  are  celebrating  this  birthday  in  June,  and  would  like  to  invite  all  members  and  other  ladies  in  the  villages  to  our  party  on  Monday  19th  June  at  7.30pm  in  the  Pavilion.    This  will  also  be  part  of  supporting  The  Great  Get  Together  inspired  by  Jo  Cox  which  happens  that  weekend.  For  numbers  please  could  you  let  Rachel  know  you  are  coming  on  [email protected]

The  Committee  would  like  to  thank  all  those  who  came  along  to  our  coffee  morning  on  29th  April.    The  sun  shone  at  the  Pavilion,  lots  of  sausage  rolls  and  cake  was  eaten,  and  we  raised  a  good  amount  for  our  funds.    Members  have  been  on  trips  recently,  to  the  National  WI  Fair  at  Alexandra  Palace,  and  to  hear  one  of  the  original  “Calendar  Girls”  speak  at  a  Langham  lunch  in  Eastbourne.    Our  monthly  meetings  have  included  some  interesting  talks  on  Romney  Marsh  Wools  and  the  Kent  Air  Ambulance.    Visitors  and  new  members  are  always  welcome  –  do  come  along  to  our  meetings  at  7.15pm  on  the  3rd  Monday  of  each  month  at  the  Village  Hall.

Pastoral  Care  for  Ashburnham

“Peace  I  leave  with  you;  my  peace  I  give  to  you.  I  do  not  give  to  you  as  the  world  gives.  Do  not  let  your  hearts  be  troubled,  and  do  not  let  them  be  afraid.”

 John  14:27

Sometimes  we  face  particular  crises  in  our  lives  and  we  need  help  and  support.  As  a  Church  St  Peter’s  seeks  to  reflect  the  healing  compassion  of  Christ,  and  through  our  Pastoral  Care  team  we  aim  to  provide  comfort  and  support,  to  those  who  are  sick  in  hospital  or  at  home,  or  recently  bereaved,  or  who  are  isolated  through  a  lack  of  mobility  or  old  age,  during  times  of  physical,  emotional  or  spiritual  need.  We  can  offer  contact  with  a  member  of  our  pastoral  team  who  can  visit,  as  well  offering  prayer,  home  Holy  Communion  or  hospital  visiting  if  required.

We  firmly  believe  that  prayer  does  have  an  effect,  and  we  welcome  requests  for  prayer.  We  have  two  prayer  points  –  one  outside  under  the  main  Welcome  notice  at  the  foot  of  the  church  pathway  and  the  other  inside  the  church  entrance  door.  There  are  cards  and  pens  available  for  use.  You  are  also  welcome  to  contact  a  member  of  the  pastoral  team  direct.  Requests  will  be  prayed  for  on  a  regular  basis  and  held  in  strict  confidence.

Ron’s  Ramblings

By  the  time  you  read  this,  I  shall  be  beardless.  Although  it  has  been  one  of  my  better  beards,  the  time  has  come  for  its  removal.  A)  because  I’m  starting  to  fiddle  with  it,  with  my  tongue  reminding  me  of  meals  from  the  recent  past.  And  necessitating  copious  applications  of  lip  balm,  and  B)  my  passport  has  run  out  and  I  need  a  photo  for  the  new  one.  One  that  doesn’t  make  me  look  like  a  jihadist.  A  few  people  have  commented  on  it,  mind.  Only  the  other  day,  I  was  described  as  ‘distinguished’,  another  thought  I  looked  ‘bohemian’.  Both  commentators  were  clearly  long  overdue  a  visit  to  a  well  known  opticians,  as  advertised  on  telly. What  about  the  Prostate  Problem,  I  hear  you  all  cry.  (  Well,  last  week,  the  bloke  in  the  pub  did,  anyway  ).  Last  month,  I  had  the  scan,  which  tells  the  radiographer  where  my  prostate  is  and  they  marked  my  torso  with  three  tattoos.  They  turned  down  my  request  for  a  ship’s  anchor,  like  my  seafaring  father  had  and  I  ended  up  with  three  dots,  about  1mm  in  size  (  16th  inch,  in  real  money).  I  thought,  at  this  point,  I’d  go  for  the  full  Hoxton  Hipster  look.  I’d  got  the  beard  and  the  tattoo,  so  all  I  needed  was  the  topknot.  Regrettably,  there’s  more  hair  on  one  of  Brian’s  pigs,  than  on  my  head.  So  that  idea  went  out  of  the  window.Next  step  is  a  daily  run  to  Brighton,  for  four  weeks,  starting  at  the  beginning  of  May.  They  tell  me  that  I  should  start  feeling  a  little  tired,  during  all  this,  and  after  four  weeks  of  driving  to  Brighton  every  day,  I  shan’t  be  at  all  surprised  !Talking  of  tattoos.  My  daughter  mentioned  a  character,  she’d  seen  on  some  reality  TV  show.  He  had  bright  ginger  hair  and  was  known  to  his  mates,  as  the  ‘Gingerbread  Man’  He  thought  this  was  great,  so  had  three  large  buttons,  tattooed  down  the  front  of  his  chest.  OK,  as  long  as  his  friends  don’t  get  hungry!

A  big,  warm  June  hello  from  all  of  us  here  at  Penhurst  Retreat  ……….  We’re  looking  to  the  future  in  our  liale  magazine  slot  this  month.

For  some  +me  Trustees  and  Staff  have  been  praying  about  how  best  to  approach  some  key  decisions  regarding  the  wonderful  old  Manor  House  building.    There  is  a  need  to  upgrade  some  of  the  electrical  cabling  and  to  improve  the  quality  of  the  water  supply  and  pressure  around  the  house.  (Some  days  it  seems  like  it  is  only  the  power  of  prayer  that  provides  any  water  at  all!)    When  this  is  done  it  would,  a_er  much  prayerful  and  prac+cal  pondering,  seem  prudent  to  re-‐order  the  rooms  in  the  Manor  House  so  that  there  is  en-‐suite  or  designated  bathroom  provision  for  all  guests.    The  thought  of  en-‐suite  provision  was  first  discussed  publicly  at  our  Penhurst  Family  Day  last  July  and,  since  then,  we  have  explored  the  possibility  of  bringing  this  to  reality  -‐  we  are  now  in  a  place  to  launch  the  project.

We  es+mate  that  the  work  will  cost  £150,000  and  we  have  been  pledged  a  dona+on  of  £50,000  to  start  us  off  in  our  fundraising.    We  hope  to  be  able  to  put  proposals  on  our  website  soon  or,  if  you  are  interested,  do  ask  to  have  a  look  at  the  plans  with  us  over  a  cup  of  tea  here.    Richard  and  Storm

This  month,  for  one  month  only  due  to  an  early  summer  lull,  the  MI  article  morphs  in  a  manly  way,  into  a  book  review….

A  little  while  back  I  read  a  book  (No  pictures!)  about  men  and  sheds….Many  of  us  MIers  have  a  shed,  or  a  barn  (or  two!)  David  Cameron  apparently  has  one  on  wheels  that  cost  25  grand!  This  though  is  a  book  for  men  who  like  to  ponder  about  their  shed-‐  It’s  called  “The  Dark  Night  of  the  Shed;  Men,  the  midlife  crisis,  spirituality  -‐  and  sheds”  and  it’s  written  by  Nick  Page.

The  author’s  basic  tenet  is  that  there's  a  point  in  a  man's  life  where  he  looks  around  him  and  asks  whether  this  is  really  where  he  wants  to  be  –  I’ve  been  that  man  and  I’ve  met  many  more  such  men  as  part  of  my  job.  Anyhow,  Nick  Page  decided  to  build  a  shed.  Not  to  answer  the  question,  but  so  that  he'd  at  least  be  able  to  get  some  peace  to  think  about  it  properly.  The  book  is  his  journey  of  discovery,  into  what  midlife  really  is  about.  It  is

VERY  funny  but  also  pretty  challenging.

One  review  says  “If  I  had  to  choose  an  author  to  sit  in  a  pub  with,  put  the  world  to  rights,  enjoy  a  beer,  share  a  few  jokes  and  prod  the  hairy  subject  of  God  and  the  male  midlife  crisis  with  a  stick,  there  are  few  I'd  choose  over  Nick  Page”.

It’s  for  men  of  a  certain  age,  and  the  women  who  have  to  live  with  them.  It’s  for  anyone  who  has  ever  looked  around  them  and  said  to  themselves,  ‘Is  that  it?’  It’s  for  the  disappointed,  the  anxious,  the  grumpy  (there  is  of  course  no  grumpiness  in  MI)  the  townie  and  the  farmer.  Most  of  all,  this  is  a  book  for  people  who  want  something  new  and  ground-‐breaking.  So  gents,  if  you  want  a  well  written,  amusing  and  provocative  book,  give  me  a  call  and  you  can  borrow  mine  for  free!

The  next  MI  is  at  the  Ash  on  Tuesday  13th  June  from  8pmIt  would  be  good  to  see  you  there.Richard  01424  893130

Parish  Meeting  The  Parish  Council  was  delighted  to  welcome  over  50  people  to  the  Annual  Parish  Meeting  held  on  27th  April.  Villagers  enjoyed  finding  out  more  about  local  activities  and  organisations  and  also  looking  at  plans  for  the  new  Village  Hall.  Congratulations

to  the  After  School  Club  for  another  fantastic  construction  on  their  stall!

The  meeting  itself  included  reports  from  the  Parish  Council  concerning  the  past  year’s  activities  and  financial  situation.  There  was  a  strong  feeling  put  forward  via  a  vote  at  the  meeting  that  the  annual  Remembrance  Sunday  Service  take  place  at

10.45am  with  the  minute’s  silence  at  11am.  Following  this  decision,  we  can  announce  that  Bp  Ken  Barham  has  agreed  to  take  the  service  at  the  Memorial  this  year.  A

detailed  report  on  the  new  Village  Hall  was  given.  Now  that  planning  permission  has  been  granted,  new  fundraising  initiatives  have  been  planned  and  a  new  charitable  organisation  is  to  be  set  up  to  build  and  operate  the  new  hall.  The  meeting  agreed  that  the  hall  will  be  called  the  Ashburnham  and  Penhurst  Community  Centre.  Other  issues  raised  at  the  meeting  included  the  further  development  of  the  Local  Action  Plan;  future  use  of  the  phone  box  at  the  Pound;  Highways  news  and  the  impact  of

aircraft  noise  on  our  rural  community.
