With the brisk chill in the air and the cooler season upon us it’s time to go visit the outdoor store at Bike Surgeon featuring apparel and gear from The North Face, Mountain Hardwear and Marmot just to name a few. These popular

brand names are not just for the outdoor enthusiast, but for anyone who wants qual-ity, style and function. Heck, even if you’re not into outdoor, cool-weather activities – you can still look good! Bike Surgeon in Shiloh is one of the very few retail stores in the Metro East that carries a full line from The North Face – in stock and ready to wrap up for the holidays.

“This is the outdoor store’s time of the year,” said Bike Sur-geon co-owner Jon Greenstreet. “We’ve got killer offerings that are not your average run-of-the-mill cheap apparel. The brands we stock are all great quality and loaded with tons of cool features from merino wool base-layers to the latest in goose down cold-weather jackets, we have all the apparel and gear you need to stay warm and dry this winter.”

What’s amazing about the products they stock is the criti-cal research their staff conducts on every item they stock. Whether it’s taking a wind-proof jacket and minimalist running shoes on a quick trail run or climbing Mt. Whitney in the dead of winter to test the latest cold weather survival gear, the guys and gals of the Surgeon make sure you are getting the best products available. They also utilize the development and design teams from their industry partners to ensure the latest technology in apparel, footwear and gear is available for you; their customer.

Come in and you’ll find jackets, vests, shirts, sweaters, footwear, pants, base-layers, shorts and more for men, women and kids. They also stock accessories for every-thing outdoors: cycling, running, hiking, skiing, snowboarding and climbing. And,

of course, there’s apparel for all the indoor fitness activities from spin shoes to yoga pants to the latest in work out gear for the gym. They also stock super cool backpacks, sleeping bags, camp stoves, climbing gear and tents. And finally to satisfy everyone’s fashion interests these items are available in all of the latest colors from Basic Black to Barberry Pink and all of this season’s other popular colors.

Everyone knows Bike Surgeon is also THE cycling shop in town. With a 30+year his-tory at the original location in Carbondale and entering their fourth year of service here in Shiloh, Bike Surgeon is the bike shop of choice here in the Metro East.

“We want to help people get the most out of the freedom and fun that comes from getting outdoors, whether riding a bike or taking a hike,” said Chris Norrington, Bike Surgeon co-owner. “We know how much we enjoy the great outdoors and love sharing that experience with our customers.” If you are looking for a great gift this holiday season, don’t forget to hit up the Surgeon. Of course they have great bikes and who doesn’t remember getting their first bike or giving a child their first bike? Make this Christmas one to remember

for a lifetime for your little ones. And for all the others on your list check out the great apparel and many other gift ideas from GPS units to Smartwool socks. Great gifts from stocking stuffers to the best presents under the tree are all available at Bike Surgeon.

Bike surgeon is located at 3348 Green Mount Crossing; (618) 622-1693; www.bikesurgeon.com; and be sure to like us on Facebook (facebook.com/bikesurgeon) to keep up on the latest news and deals.

Celebrating 50 years of excellence in music, the Belleville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra was founded by George N. Tuerck, a conductor and violinist, who lived in Belleville. The BPYO is the youth version of the Belleville Philharmonic Society

that is now celebrating 146 years making it the nation's second oldest symphony orchestra in continuous operation.

The mission of the Youth Orchestra then and now is to provide an opportunity for young musicians to achieve musical competence by studying and performing quality orchestral literature before audiences.

While today’s school districts are cutting music programs including orchestras at the high school level, students are turning to private teachers and groups like the Youth Orchestra to continue their musical education with a stringed instrument.

There are two divisions to the Youth Orchestra: The Collegium Musicum which is the main orchestra and an audition is required; and The Virtuosi – an advanced ensemble that is the conductor's choice only.

As the chairman and coordinator of the Youth Orchestra, Lisa Reiss works hard to recruit new students through area schools and private teachers. She is also the mother of two young musicians and knows firsthand the benefits of belonging to the Youth Orchestra.

“I think my role is important to the community and to my kids, John and Emily, and I know it will make a difference in their lives,” she said. “They get so much from this experience - camaraderie, musicianship and a lifelong love for music. These young students are getting the opportunity to play music that most kids don’t play until col-lege. Here, they are introduced to it and they’re not afraid of it.”

Auditions are not scary as some might think and they are ongoing throughout the year. “Sometimes the student can come in, sit down and play with us,” Reiss said. “We’ll just see how it goes – no reason to be nervous.”

In 1995, the Youth Orchestra was able to hire the well-known conductor Dr. Leon Burke III who is beloved in the St. Louis region as well as across the country. He is also a pianist, organist and vocalist, and works with the St. Louis Symphony Chorus, two youth or-chestras, two community orchestras; he teaches voice at Saint Louis University and East Central College in Union; and is the choir director at Eliot Unitarian Chapel in Kirkwood.

As a young man from a family of teachers, Dr. Burke fell in love with music and told his mentor that he was determined to become a professional musician even though such a road is not always so lucrative. “He was less than encouraging but I was determined – and I told him so!” Dr. Burke said.

“I have always believed that the difference between working with kids and working with adults is that kids need more problem solving yet they don’t want things ‘dumbed down’ for them,” he said. “They might be playing the same music as an adult orchestra but they need help tuning or practicing technique, and working as a team with their fellow musicians. Some of them may not have played on a sports team so this teaches them to work with each other to accomplish a common goal.”

The thing school administrators are missing is that “music synthesizes all the disci-plines students are learning in school,” he said. “When reading and playing music, the kids have to know math and often they are getting a social studies lesson when learn-ing music from another country or culture. They might even have to know a foreign language. And they need to be fantastically coordinated with hands, fingers and lips – it’s very physical. You know, if more kids were involved in music they wouldn’t have time for bullying and they would learn how to cooperate.”

Indeed, studies show that kids involved in music have higher grade point averages and do better on their tests.

“What I love about working with kids is that making great music is so new and they take such pride in their achievements,” Dr. Burke said. “I relive my childhood and all those wonderful feelings.”

The next concert will be the Tuerck Memorial Concert at 2 p.m., Dec. 8, at Westview Baptist Church in Swansea and will feature Concerto winners Kelsey Booth and Sruti Suresh who competed with other students for scholarship money.

For more information and to find out how your child can become involved, please visit www.bellevillephilharmonic.org or call (618) 979-8466.

“I remember how our Secret Santa Program started just like it was yesterday,” said Jay Taddei, C.O.O. of APG. “It was a Saturday morning a couple of weeks before Christmas at our O’Fallon office and one of my staff told me about a difficult situ-ation in the physical therapy area. I went out to see and saw a 5-year-old boy excitedly telling his mother everything he wanted from Santa. The excitement in his voice was exactly what you would expect from any 5 year old, but his mother’s face told a dramatically different story. I remember hearing the mom try to quietly explain to her son that Santa was so busy, that he couldn’t make it to every child’s house, and that she didn’t think Santa would make it to their house that year. The next moment will be etched in my mind forever when the son looked right at his mom and said, ‘Mom, I know Santa is always busy, but he loves me and would never forget me!’ It was abso-lutely heart wrenching to see the mom’s face turn horri-bly red and you could just see her imploding. I took the mom into my office to talk while my staff played with her son. It turned out the mom and son had just gone through a truly horrific stretch of bad luck that had left them in a very dire financial state. She told me she was going to tell us that day would be her last visit because she couldn’t afford to come in anymore, and was selling her car to keep a roof over their head. There was no way she could afford any Christmas presents. We did a hard-ship agreement so that she could continue to come in at least until she sold her car.”

Taddei continued, “The next week was Christmas week, and without the mom knowing I shared her situation with my staff. Amazingly, a handful of people raised over $300 to buy presents for the family, plus APG helped financially to make sure she didn’t have to sell her car. At her next appointment I asked her to come to my office for a minute. She had no idea what was about to happen, and I will never forget the look on her face when she realized what we had done! It was the most rewarding moment of my professional career.”

no Child should Wake Up on Christmas Morning Without Food or PresentsOver the last 12 years the staff of APG has seen countless stories like this, and fortunately they have been able to make a difference in a lot of people’s lives. APG is striving to make sure that no local family goes without a proper Christmas dinner and at least some presents for their kids to open.

The majority of funding comes directly from APG’s cash donations. However, APG has received help from a variety of wonderful people. Many of APG’s patients

buy some of the items from the children’s wish lists. The O’Fallon Township High School Interact Club has sponsored dozens of children and helped deliver the presents. The Secret Santa Program has also received donations from members of BNI Belleville, Swansea Rotary Club, Culver’s Restaurant and St. Clair Bowl. Also, John Armour of Watson’s Office City donates his time and big delivery truck to help deliver presents.

How You Can Help!1. If you know someone in pain tell them about APG’s Secret Santa Donation Program. If they donate $20 to the Secret Santa Program they will receive a consultation, two X-rays if needed and therapy for that day. They will get the care they need and help those less fortunate at the same time.2. APG posts children’s wish lists at each of its locations. The public as well as APG patients and staff can help by

buying one of the items for a child.

3. Culver’s Restaurant Secret Santa Night is from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 27 at the O’Fallon Culvers locaton on Highway 50. They will generously donate 15% of all pro-ceeds directly to APG’s Secret Santa Fund, so please eat there that night.

For further information, please call Jay Taddei directly at (618) 567-7103.

The True Spirit of Christmas

Associated Physicians Group (APG) kicked off their annual Secret Santa Program on Nov. 6. It has been a dozen years since this heartfelt

program began with a chance encounter between the staff of APG, a single mother and her 5-year-old son. The program has consistently grown every year and has now helped over 1,400 local families have a better Christmas. Here is the story on how this wonderful program started.

There are so many benevolent people in the Metro East who work hard to provide for others in need. The holidays are a wonderful time to give back to the com-munity, but there are just as many opportunities throughout the year.

One group in particular from St. Matthew Methodist Church in Belleville organized 14 years ago to travel to Paraguay every September and provide a wide range of medical services including dental, general medical and eye care to the underprivileged people of the very rural area 150 to 200 miles from the capital city of Asuncion.

In 1998, Al Von Staeg of the Mission Society of United Methodist spoke to the “Bible Boomers” class at the church and instilled a great passion in the group to reach out to the people of Paraguay. “We discovered the country had such a need. When our team is there we see approximately 1,000 people in just four days working from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.,” said Keith Breithaupt, a current organizer and pharmacist at the Schnucks pharmacy in Swansea. “Many, many people have been involved over the years,” he continued. For the first few years the medical team went together with a group of construction volunteers who have built many churches over the years. A converted mobile home was their first place of operations where they treated patients and today they work in a Korean Methodist-built adult education building used to teach trades to it's students.

Some members of the original team included Dr. Jeff Uhl, DMD; Dr. Kim Littlefield, DMD, PC; Dr. Cynthia Littlefield, DMD; Dr. Blake Hocott, radiologist; Dr. Phil Chu; Blake Folde, R.N.; and church Minister of Music Hank Opplinger, who is the teacher of the

“Bible Boomers.” In fact, Opplinger is now the resident chef – “he takes great care of us and I’m sure we all gain weight that week,” laughed Breithaupt.

Paraguay is a landlocked country in South America bordered by Argentina to the south and southwest, Brazil to the east and northeast, and Bolivia to the northwest. The population is estimated at 6.3 million and is one of the region's poorest and

least-developed countries. In other words, it’s not a tourist destination.

Traveling there isn’t easy as the team flies into the capital city of Asuncion and then boards buses or vans - with ALL of their baggage - that take them through the remote, rather treacherous, terrain which did not have paved roads until just recently. “Imagine packing up thousands of dol-lars of medical equipment, medicine, dental tools, etc. and transporting it to this third world country?” While they have never experienced any trouble, there’s no traveling at night due to reported dangers along the roadway.

Through the years they have made friends with local pas-tors and other missionaries who spread the word that “the Americans” will be coming again in September. Patients of all ages come from near and far via foot or horse-drawn wagon. “There are remote clinics and poorly staffed hospitals in the rural areas, but we haven’t been too impressed by their care,” he said.

There are so many stories such as the baby one of our doctors delivered to a mother who had walked for hours just to have “the Americans” perform the procedure. Dr. Hocott delivered another baby to a local mother who was so grateful that she named her baby boy after the doctor’s own son – Zachary. “Now, we see Zachary, his mother

and father, and grandma every year!”

The team is greeted with hugs, kisses and gifts of cheese, eggs and live chickens! Sometimes the language is a barrier as the poor people of Paraguay rarely even know Spanish. “Often we need more than one translator to go from English to Span-ish to Guarini (native language) and back,” he said. The medical mission to Paraguay has expanded and been extended through the years to include among other things a school called New Horizons that was started 14 years ago by Sue Gibbons, a missionary from Ohio who has since become great friends with members of the St. Matthew team. “The school has 700 students from preschool to 12th grade now – this November marks the graduation of her first 12th grade class,” Breithaupt said.

In addition, “We started a sports clinic this February with the help of Andy Millas, son-in-law to the former Belleville East baseball Coach Larry Patton,” he said. Curt Smith Sporting Goods donated all the equipment and 120 kids participated this fall in Yrybuchua!

By Keith Breithaupt

One of the first grade teachers at New Horizons School was expecting her first child with much anticipation. When Antonella was born, it was soon discovered that she had spina bifida, and was told by the doctors in a very cold, inhumane way that she would never walk, dance, skip, etc. Her mother responded, “God will have the final word.”

Antonella was a beautiful child, but this prognosis was dev-astating to her mother and father. Sue Givens, both a friend and director of the school contacted me with the information. We have some very talented and dedicated physicians that accompany us to Paraguay and one of these such individuals was Dr. Amy Hackman. Amy was doing a fellowship at one of the hospitals in Miami and also was supporting several children at New Horizons at this time. Through Amy's contacts at the hospital, the hospital agreed to pick up all related costs in providing surgical care to Antonella. Then, many Methodist churches in Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee paid the travel costs for Antonella, Sue (to serve as translator) and both parents to come to the United States.

Antonella and her parents were here for about a month for the surgery and rehab. The best part of the story is the day after Antonella got out of intensive care, she sat up independently for the first time. Two weeks later, she pulled herself up from the floor and walked holding onto the couch. Not even the doctors expected those kind of results so quickly. Antonella not only walks but runs, skips, swims and dances, including ballet. She is now a preschool student at New Horizons achieving all the goals of her teachers.

The Garden is sharing the spirit of the season with an abundance of festivities sure to create lasting memo-ries for your family. Enjoy the return of the colorful Gardenland Express holiday flower and train show, two weekends filled with holiday carols and visits with Santa, resplendent holiday décor, traditional Chanukah and Kwanzaa celebrations and more.

The annual Gardenland Express holiday flower and train show is a beloved seasonal tradition at the Garden. Watch as eight G-scale model trains wander through a floral wonderland of over 500 colorful poin-settias and other blooming plants.

This year’s display celebrates “Merry Botanical Tradi-tions” featuring beloved plants of the holiday season. Hundreds of blooming plants, decorations and the ever-popular model trains covering 900 feet of elevated track weaving through the display create the lively atmosphere. To celebrate the success of the Chinese Lantern Festival: Art by Day, Magic by Night held this year at the Garden, the show will feature silk pieces of Euphorbia (poinsettia), Ilex (holly), Zygocactus (Christmas cactus) and more, crafted by the Lantern Festival artisans.

Gardenland Express is open Wednesday, Nov. 21 through Tuesday Jan. 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., closing early at 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and closed on Christmas Day. Cortisol is produced by adrenal glands which sit on top of the kidneys. When you are exposed to stress, the adrenal glands release Cortisol as a preparation for the body’s “fight or flight” response. However, when your body is continually exposed to stress without any support, like exercise or

nutrition, the adrenal glands overproduce Cortisol. As the stress continues, the adrenal glands become, literally, exhausted and unable to produce enough Cortisol to support even the smallest amount of stress. The end result is Adrenal dysfunction.

People with Adrenal Dysfunction will experience a variety of symptoms including acne, foggy thinking, achy joints, irritability, lack of sex drive, hot flashes, fatigue throughout the day and difficulty sleeping at night. In fact, it’s estimated that as many as 80% of Americans have, or have experienced, Adrenal Dysfunction.

There is help! The first step is to get tested. Don’t worry – no needles required for this test, just saliva. Saliva is super sensitive and provides an accurate measurement of ac-tively available hormones. Your Cortisol, Estrogen, Progesterone and Testosterone levels can be measured by a saliva test. Upon determining your levels, a customized plan will be created to better support your adrenals. The second step is put-ting your plan into action! Your plan will consist of nutritional and dietary supplements, as well as exercise or chiropractic therapy for pain and stress reduction. Acupuncture is also used to help balance the body’s energy, alleviating some stress symptoms and pain. It’s a fantastic alternative to experiencing the many side effects of taking prescription medications for pain, anxiety or chronic fatigue. Your Wellness Specialist and Chiropractor will work with you to chart short-term goals to improve your health, and long-term goals to sustain your health.

Put more Wellness in your Well-Being! In a matter of time your body will respond to stress better, resulting in a more restful sleep, reduced weight, a stronger body and greatly improved overall health!!

You’ve probably heard of the hormone called Cortisol.

Many weight loss pills and diets claim to block Cortisol as a solution for losing unwanted weight.

What if your Cortisol levels aren’t high and don’t need to be blocked? Your Cortisol levels might actually be low resulting in higher or stubborn numbers on the scale, as well as a lengthy list of other symptoms that you might be passing off as “normal” aging.

Not only does having a clean home just make you feel more in control of your sur-roundings, but studies show that you will actually be better able to concentrate on a task at hand thus helping you accomplish more in less time.

Celebrating their first year anniversary, NuKastle Cleaning wants to step in and help ensure you accomplish your goals. Setting out to become the “cleaning service that automatically comes to mind,” owner Bill Blair said he is quickly fulfilling his own mission to “build our identity as the premier residential cleaning service by setting the standard in quality of service, customer service and professionalism.”

Indeed, Blair and his wife began their company with just the two of them and one year later they have grown to employ seven people! “Every day ‘the team’ gets a binder with the schedule for the day as well as the company mission statement as a friendly reminder,” Blair said. "We have two teams of three people and a seventh is utilized as a ‘floater' who can really focus on the details. Like wiping the tops of doors and windows, chair rails – things you can’t see.”

A niche that NuKastle takes great pride in is being the local expert on “green cleaning.” Green Cleaning, or environmentally-friendly cleaning is becoming more important

each day and “I want us to be at the forefront of this movement,” he said. “We can tailor cleaning needs to be totally green or moderately green.”

The company offers all kinds of cleaning services like a one-time deep cleaning; before a big occasion cleaning; a regular cleaning schedule; and move-out cleans.

In addition, “we will always have a presence in the community, being empathetic and embracing that there is always an opportunity to give back to those in need,” Blair said. In fact, they just joined the organization called Cleaning For A Reason which donates house cleaning for cancer patients going through treatment. www.cleaningforareason.org.

With our second team and having the seventh team member also gives NuKastle the opportunity to often help out someone who needs a last-minute cleaning for whatever reason. “Just give us a call and we can work it out,” he said.

Give nuKastle Cleaning a call today at 618-767-6229 or email [email protected]. Please visit the web site at www.nukastlecleaning.com. Gift cards are available too just in time for the holidays!

While the kitchen’s place is at the heart of the home and therefore the most seen room, it is also the most likely to show wear and tear. Heat, oils and moisture from cooking, dishwashers and ovens as well as everyday scratches

and dings from constant use, can result in the need for maintenance and restoration.

“We can really think of our kitchen cabinetry as the largest – and certainly the most expensive – piece of furniture in the home,” said John Hurn, owner of Precision Wood Restoration. “It’s definitely the most used furniture piece in the home.”

To extend the life of your kitchen cabinetry, Preci-sion Wood offers a cabinet refinishing program that can restore and refresh in just five to 10 days with minimal disruption to your life. “You don’t even have to take the stuff out of your cabinets,” Hurn said.

Customers have the opportunity to completely change the color of their cabinets if desired and Precision will create as many color samples as necessary. Doors and drawer fronts are removed for off-site treatment and then reinstalled when complete. Then, cabinet boxes and frames are sanded and finished.

Hurn works to combine traditional craftsmanship with the best in current technol-ogy to produce outstanding results for antique and heirloom furniture, all types of wood furniture and doors. They also provide furniture repair to commercial

businesses.

Whenever possible, they use the latest in water-borne coatings to reduce odors and limit environment impact. In fact, their restoration techniques are considered “green” by reusing the existing materials thus saving trees and reducing materials in landfills.

Hurn grew up around wood in his father’s lumber business in Southern Illinois where he learned to make and repair wood windows while in high school. After a career in the technology world, Hurn decided to indulge his long-held passion for woodworking by attending the National Institute of Wood Finishing. Upon completion of his studies he opened Precision Wood Restoration, serving the greater St. Louis metropolitan area with the finest in wood restoration services.

In 2012, Michelle Veit joined Hurn’s business and has a bachelor’s in art and a diploma in Wood Finishing from the National Institute of Wood Finishing. Please call (855) 367-7967 for more information and visit www.precisionwoodrestoration.com.

Thoe’s Flooring is the realization of goal-oriented Mike Thoe who set his sights on owning a flooring contractor business and made it happen in a relatively short time period.

“Mike worked with his best friends’ uncle in high school who taught him everything he knew,” said Jennifer Thoe, co-owner of Thoe’s. “He decided at that time, just a few years ago, he wanted to be a flooring contractor and he did it!”

While he is a flooring contractor including carpet, hardwood and tile, he does not sell flooring – yet. He has a relationship with several local distributors where the customer can purchase the flooring and have it delivered, or, Thoe can go by and pick it up. The beauty of using Thoe as an installer is that his work is guaranteed and he pays careful attention to customer service.

“So many people go to places like 'the big box stores' where they use subcontractors they don’t even know,” Thoe said. “But with Mike, you know him personally and you know his work is top-notch. He always meets the customer’s expectations.”

His strategy for such good service is to surround himself with subcontrac-tors he trusts. “Mike has family and friends working with him which makes them all work that much harder – to support each other,” Thoe said. “He also beats the price of his competitors.”

In addition to flooring, Thoe’s also does any kind of tiling project such as fireplace sur-rounds, backsplashes – really anything you can imagine. “He is very creative and likes to work with the customer to get the desired finished product,” Thoe said. Always up-to-date on the trends, Thoe’s likes to work with natural stone and other popular products on the market today.

While Thoe’s does a lot of residential work, they also seek commercial projects and have completed many large jobs throughout the Metro East.

Local interior designer Kay Kendall pro-vided some great ideas for Christmas decorating on a budget. “With a slug-

gish economy, it’s time to regroup, rethink and recreate new ideas using your existing or recycled holiday decorations,” she said. “Go green!”

First of all, “Make a plan! Before you drag everything out of storage, it's helpful if you decide on a theme,” Kendall said. A few ideas to consider:

• Toyland • Old Fashioned • Rustic • Santa • Country • Victorian • Patriotic• Modern or Eclectic Mix• Artsy or whimsical

Secondly, keep it simple. “Don't overwhelm yourself by trying to use everything you have or driving all over in search of the perfect items,” Kendall said. “Pick your favorite items for your theme and add some bold color combinations (this is great for the colored glass tree bulbs).”

Also, have fun with various sizes and scales of ornaments and decorations sitting about the house. “Different sizes keeps things in-teresting and please don't fill every corner, nook and cranny with Christmas décor,” she said. “Less is always more!”

Decide what you are going to use and if there are items in your collection that you haven’t used lately, donate to a shelter or service or-ganization where they can give another family great joy. Or, keep half of your collection and donate the other: “It feels good!”

Areas of the house that make the biggest impact for your holiday décor:

• Entry Door and Porch• Tree – any size pine tree or use a large houseplant! • Fireplace Mantle• Dining Room Table• Windows

Finally, “decorating should be fun,” Kendall said. “Embellish some of your existing orna-ments such as glass bulbs and wreaths. Kids love to help decorate with glitter, jewels, rib-bons, photos, clay pots, candies and cook-ies. Let them take past or existing holiday cards and make ornaments or wall hang-ings out of them.”

Pretty PoinsettiasKeep These special Plants Year-Round With Proper selection And Care

Poinsettias are traditional Christmas plants that will last through the Christmas season and beyond, but it is important to select the best plant for your home environment. The following are a few selection pointers:• Choose a plant with dark green foliage down to the soil line.• Choose bracts (modified leaves) that are completely colored.• Do not purchase poinsettias with a lot of green around the

bract edges.• Do not choose plants with fallen or yellowed leaves.• The poinsettia should look full, balanced and attractive from

all sides.• The plant should be 2-1/2 times taller than the diameter of

the containers.• Choose plants that are not drooping or wilting.• Do not purchase plants that are displayed in paper or plastic.

Plants held in sleeves will deteriorate quickly.• Do not purchase plants that have been displayed or crowded

close together. • Check the plant’s soil. If it’s wet and the plant is wilted, this

could be an indication of root rot.• Check the poinsettia’s maturity. Check the true flowers which

are located at the base of the colored bracts. If the flowers are green or red-tipped and fresh looking the bloom will “Hold” longer than if yellow pollen is covering the flowers.

• When you take the poinsettia home, be sure to have it sleeved or covered when outdoor temperatures are below 50 degrees.

• The length of time your poinsettia will last is dependent on the maturity of the plant; when you buy it and; how you treat the plant. With care, poinsettias should retain their beauty for weeks and some varieties will stay attractive for months, and come back next year.

• After you have made your poinsettia selection, make sure it is wrapped properly because exposure to low temperatures even for a few minutes can damage the bracts and leaves.

• Unwrap your poinsettia carefully and place in indirect light. Six hours of light daily is ideal. Keep the plant from touching cold windows.
