The award is given to a law enforcement officer who exhibits honor, integrity and professionalism, according to the Smith County Defense Lawyer's Association. "I'm honored - I remember Weldon when he was one of the founding members of the Smith County Defense Lawyer's Association; he was a gentle- man who would always fight for his client," Huggler said. '"Ib be compared to him is a tremen- dous honor," he said. Huggler, who has been board certified in criminal law since 2005, graduated from Texas A&M University and received his law degree from SouthTexas College of Law in Houston. He is finishing his term as president of the Smith County Defense Iawyer's Association and is a past president of the Smith Countv B ar Association. Jac-kson. whose father Alan Jackson is the chief prosecutor for the U.S. Anorney's Offrce with the Eastern District of Texas, said he has memories of Holcomb. "Mr. Holcomb was a hero of mine growing up - it's an honor to be associated with him," Jackson said. Jackson graduated from the University of Dallas and received his law degree from Texas Tech University. Jackson was named a 2010 Rising Star Super Lawyer, an award given to the top 2.5 percent of attor- neys in Texas under 40. The Weldon Holcomb Award was established in honor of a Tller attorney of that name, who was a founding member of both @ Criminal Defense Lawyers Associations. The World War II veteran and Tyler native served as the elected Smith County district attorney in the 1950s and spent the rest of his career as a defense attorney in the area. He argued and won two cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. The Dale Geddie Award is given in memory of Constable Dale Geddie, who was killed in the line of dutv in 2006. Geddie was a longtime Smith County private investigator, police offrcer and constable. Alan Jackson. who is Millslagle's supervisor, said the community is best served when law enforcement ofh- cers vigorously but ethically enforce the law. "This award from the defense bar confirms that agent Millslagle has made a career of doing just that," Alan Jackson said.
